If you’re thinking about leaving the couch behind and seeing a movie the old-fashioned way—big screen, dark room, popcorn in hand—here are a few worth checking out this weekend, plus where they’re playing around southeastern Connecticut.
Unfortunately, not every movie weekend can be stacked wall-to-wall with future classics. Sometimes you get a week like this one… a strange little buffet of video game chaos, concert movies, talking sheep solving murders, and Sally Field bonding with an octopus. And somehow? That’s the lineup.
Still, there’s enough here to justify a theater trip, a couch night, or at the very least an overpriced bucket of popcorn.
Absolutely Nobody Came Here For Subtlety
Mortal Kombat 2 arrives with a built-in army of fans ready to cheer every punch, fatality, and one-liner. The big attraction this time around is Karl Urban stepping into the role of Johnny Cage, which honestly feels like casting specifically designed to make convention crowds lose their minds.
The story centers on Earthrealm’s fighters, including Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage, as Raiden assembles them for a brutal tournament against Shao Kahn, whose plan is nothing less than domination across every realm. The film also digs deeper into Kitana’s story, exploring her captivity under Shao Kahn and her struggle to protect her people and reclaim her identity amid the coming war.
If all of that sounds awesome to you, congratulations, you already bought tickets three months ago. Theaters are packed with showtimes this weekend, so seeing it won’t be difficult. Surviving the audience screaming every time someone gets uppercut through a wall? Different story. Fight!!!
Playing everywhere:
Sad Girl Pop Goes IMAX
Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D takes Billie Eilish fans directly into the crowd experience with a full-scale 3D concert film directed by none other than James Cameron. Yes. That James Cameron.
The film is being praised for its immersive visuals and technical presentation, designed to make audiences feel like they’re standing inside the arena during the performance. Critical reviews weren’t fully available as of publication, but honestly… Billie fans are going to adore this thing no matter what critics say.
If you already love her music and enjoy concert films, this is probably an easy yes. Grab popcorn, stare dramatically at the screen, and prepare for emotional devastation in surround sound.
Playing at:
Somewhere A Denim Vest Is Crying Tears Of Joy
Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition targets a completely different audience than Billie Eilish, and those fans are absolutely willing to drive 30 or 40 miles to see it. Maidenheads are loyal like that.
The documentary has earned solid reviews and celebrates the legacy, chaos, and endurance of one of heavy metal’s defining bands. No, it doesn’t have James Cameron-level visual wizardry behind it, but give these guys a break. They came out of the 70s and 80s carrying amplifiers the size of refrigerators.
If you’ve spent decades screaming along to Iron Maiden albums, this is less a movie and more a pilgrimage.
There are only two theaters within 40 miles of us showing it:
Murder. But Fluffy.
The Sheep Detective currently sits at a shocking 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means this movie genuinely nails exactly what it’s trying to do.
The story follows a flock of unusually intelligent sheep investigating the suspicious death of their shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman. Based on the novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, the film blends mystery, comedy, and talking animals into something audiences will adore.
If you’re looking for a genuinely good family movie this Mother’s Day weekend, this might quietly be the best choice out there. Excellent programming move by Amazon/MGM.
Catch it at the following theaters:
- Mystic Luxury Cinemas
- Regal Waterford
- AMC Classic Lisbon 12
- Westbrook Cinemas 12
- All South County Luxury Cinemas
- Showcase Warwick
Sally Field Befriends An Octopus
The movie I’ll personally be watching this weekend stars Sally Field alongside Lewis Pullman, who definitely looks like his father, Bill. Also starring? The always wonderful Alfred Molina.
Starting Friday, it is based on the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt. The story follows Tova, a grieving widow working at an aquarium, who develops an unexpected bond with Marcellus, a sharp-tongued giant Pacific octopus. While Tova quietly struggles with loneliness and unresolved loss, Marcellus becomes determined to uncover a long-buried mystery that could change both of their lives in ways neither expects.
Quirky? Sally Field crying? I’ll take that bet. Chocolate and popcorn for me.
Until Next Week
Whether you head to the theater, end up at a concert film, or stay home with Netflix and snacks, hopefully you find something worth watching this weekend.
See you at the movies. Or hiding from society on your couch.
This weekend both are valid.
