CT FPA Trails Day 2026: A Walk Through Time: Historic Groton Heights invites participants to explore more than 250 years of local history along the scenic banks of the Thames River on Saturday, June 6. Led by an experienced guide from Thames River Heritage Park, this walking tour highlights the stories, architecture, and people who helped shape one of Groton’s most historic neighborhoods.
As the tour winds through the hilly streets of Groton Heights, participants will discover the homes of patriots, whaling captains, town founders, and civic leaders whose lives were closely connected to the river and the region’s maritime heritage. Along the way, local lore and historic landmarks bring the area’s rich past to life. Visitors may also wish to pair this experience with the nearby Fort Griswold Battlefield tour for a deeper look at Groton’s Revolutionary War history.
History buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys exploring New England’s past on foot will appreciate this engaging guided walk. Participants should dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes, as the route follows sidewalks and streets that include several hilly sections.
Note:
The tour departs from the gates of Fort Griswold Battlefield at the intersection of Park Avenue and Monument Street in Groton. Parking is available along both streets. The meeting location can be found on Google Maps using coordinates 41.354531, -72.078454.
