Every town has that one summer tradition that you don’t want to miss. In Stonington, after the Blessing of the Fleet, that tradition is the COMO Village Fair. I’ve gone more than once thinking I’d spend an hour walking around before heading off to something else, only to realize half the day had disappeared. That is what happens when you’re around delicious food, LIVE music, local artists, and neighbors.
The COMO Village Fair is celebrating its 74th year and is one of southeastern Connecticut’s longest traditions that continues to bring the community together. From local vendors selling handcrafted goods to local organizations offering activities for kids and adults alike. Not to mention the books, delicious food vendors, and LIVE entertainment. The Village Fair offers that carefree atmosphere that is hard to come by these days. Whether you are shopping for that special gift, grabbing lunch, or just enjoying an afternoon outdoors; you can always find something at the fair.
One of the most anticipated events at the COMO Village Fair is the Stonington Historic Pie-Eating Contest. Contestants eagerly wait their turn stuffing pie into their mouths at the same table as every other “competitive” eater as onlookers laugh, cheer, and take selfies.
Granted, the pie eating contest is just one small piece of the day. This year features an America 250 celebration with vintage teams competing in an 1864 baseball doubleheader, sporting vintage uniforms and playing by Civil War-era rules. Plus there’s music from the era and even good ol’ Abe Lincoln popping in to throw out the first pitch.
There’s no wrong way to enjoy the fair! Whether you are a lifelong local who has been going since you were little or your first time attending. I promise there is something for everyone to enjoy and that is why local families continue to return each year.
Sometimes the best memories aren’t made at the largest festivals; they’re made at the ones that feel like home.
