There are two kinds of shopping.
There’s the kind where you know exactly what you need, find it, buy it, and go home.
And then there’s the kind where you have absolutely no idea what you’re looking for until you see it.
That’s the fun of Vintage Bazaar New England, which takes over Mystic Seaport Museum this Saturday and Sunday with more than 100 vintage dealers, artists, collectors, makers, designers, and small businesses spread across the museum grounds.
You might arrive looking for an old piece of furniture and leave carrying a vintage jacket. Or handmade jewelry. Or an old nautical sign you absolutely didn’t need until five minutes ago.
That’s the hunt.
More Than Rows of Antiques
Vintage Bazaar has spent more than a decade turning the traditional antiques market into something closer to a summer festival.
Yes, there will be plenty of vintage treasures to dig through. But you’ll also find original artwork, handmade goods, live music, food, lawn games, and places to simply sit for a while and enjoy the Mystic River.
Among more than 100 participating vendors, expect to find:
- Antiques and collectibles
- Vintage home décor and furnishings
- Architectural salvage
- Vintage and handmade clothing
- Handmade jewelry
- Original artwork
- Textiles
- Apothecary goods
- Candles
- Coastal décor
- Plenty of things that don’t fit neatly into any category
And that’s really the point.
You don’t walk through a market like this with an Amazon search bar in your head. Wander. Dig through things. Talk to the dealers. Pick something up because it reminds you of your grandmother’s kitchen or the house you grew up in.
The unexpected discoveries are usually the best ones.
The Setting Makes This One Different
You couldn’t ask for a much better backdrop for a vintage market than Mystic Seaport Museum.
Instead of walking through a convention center or parking lot, you’re shopping among historic buildings, gardens, working trades, and vessels along the Mystic River.
Better yet, Vintage Bazaar is included with regular Mystic Seaport Museum admission. There isn’t a separate festival ticket. Museum members attend free.
That changes how I’d approach the day.
Don’t think of this as a market you need to race through. Browse for a while, wander down to the waterfront, explore the museum, grab something to eat, listen to some music, and then circle back through the vendors.
You may notice something the second time around that you walked straight past the first.
Saturday Morning Is for Serious Treasure Hunters
If there’s something specific you’re hoping to find, I’d go early Saturday.
Unlike a traditional store, a vintage dealer can’t necessarily head into the stockroom and grab another one. Much of what you’ll see is genuinely one of a kind, so once somebody carries it away, it’s gone.
Mystic Seaport Museum members have an even bigger advantage: members receive special early access beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, an hour before the event’s regular 10 a.m. opening.
If you’re just there to browse, take your time.
With more than 100 vendors, you’re not seeing this entire thing in 20 minutes.
Bring the Kids
This is also one of those shopping events where bringing the family doesn’t necessarily mean hearing “Are we done yet?” every six minutes.
The Bazaar takes place throughout Mystic Seaport Museum, so families can bounce between shopping and the museum’s regular attractions. Add live music and lawn games, and there are plenty of opportunities to give younger visitors a break from watching you contemplate whether an antique lobster trap would look good in the living room.
There are no special age restrictions for the event.
Don’t Forget the Music
Shopping isn’t the only reason to linger.
Live music will be featured throughout the weekend, helping give the Bazaar more of a festival atmosphere than a traditional antiques show. Lawn games and gathering spaces will also be scattered around the event.
That’s part of what makes this particular Bazaar interesting. You can spend an hour seriously hunting for vintage pieces… or barely shop at all and still have a pretty enjoyable afternoon.
A Parking Tip That Could Save You Some Aggravation
Here’s the practical information I’d remember before leaving home.
Mystic Seaport Museum has free on-site parking, but spaces are limited and could fill during the busiest parts of the weekend.
Organizers are providing free overflow parking at Mystic River Hotel & Suites, 9 Whitehall Avenue in Mystic, roughly a mile from the museum. A complimentary shuttle will run continuously between the overflow lot and the museum on Saturday and Sunday.
The first shuttle leaves the overflow lot at 10 a.m., and the final shuttle leaves Mystic Seaport Museum at 5:45 p.m.
If downtown Mystic is already hopping when you arrive, heading directly for overflow parking may save you from circling around looking for a space.
Make a Day of It
Vintage Bazaar New England runs Saturday and Sunday, August 15–16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Mystic Seaport Museum. Admission to the Bazaar is included with regular museum admission, and members attend free.
Wear comfortable shoes. Give yourself a few hours. And don’t arrive convinced that you know exactly what you’re looking for.
With vintage shopping, that’s usually how you miss the good stuff.
