The Labor Day weekend event is designed as an old-fashioned field day for all ages, using the Museum’s historic Seaport Village as the backdrop for an afternoon built around simple games rather than screens or elaborate attractions.
Family Field Day is included with regular Mystic Seaport Museum admission, so there is no separate event ticket required. Participants can check in at a pop-up tent on the Village Green and take home a commemorative ribbon from the day.
Sack Races, Bucket Brigades and Barrel Rolling
The activities reach back to the kind of games that could once turn a schoolyard, community picnic or town gathering into a competition.
Mystic Seaport Museum has specifically announced sack races, bucket brigades and barrel rolling among the September 5 activities, with additional field-day games planned.
The format keeps things simple and physical.
Sack races have competitors trying to hop their way across a finish line while standing inside sacks. Bucket brigades turn teamwork into the competition, with participants working together to move water from one point to another. Barrel rolling adds a game that feels especially at home inside a recreated maritime village.
The Museum is describing the event as appropriate for visitors of all ages rather than limiting participation to children.
A Field Day in the Middle of a 19th-Century Seaport
The location makes Family Field Day different from holding the same collection of games on a modern athletic field.
Mystic Seaport Museum’s Village Green sits within a recreated 19th-century coastal community populated with historic buildings, working trades and waterfront spaces.
The Museum’s Seaport Village contains dozens of historic structures gathered from locations around New England and arranged to interpret life in a maritime community during the 1800s.
Visitors can move between homes, shops and trade buildings while interpreters demonstrate skills that were once part of everyday coastal life.

The centerpiece of the waterfront collection is the Charles W. Morgan, launched in 1841 and now the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship.
Visitors can also explore the Museum’s collection of historic watercraft and watch maritime preservation work underway at the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard.

Visitors do still need admission to the Museum itself.
The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the grounds remaining open until 6 p.m.
Because Family Field Day takes place inside the Museum, visitors can purchase regular admission and spend the rest of the day exploring the campus before or after participating in the games.
