Long before marching bands and fireworks became the centerpiece of Fourth of July celebrations, New England towns celebrated Independence Day with something a little more unusual. Known as Antiques & Horribles parades, these lighthearted processions featured outrageous costumes, playful satire, homemade floats, and plenty of humor. They became especially popular during America’s 1876 Centennial celebration, when communities across New England embraced the tradition as a fun way to celebrate the nation’s 100th birthday.

This Fourth of July, that quirky piece of New England history comes to life once again at Mystic Seaport Museum. At 12:30 p.m., visitors can watch the Antiques & Horribles Parade as colorful characters, musicians, and costumed marchers wind through the Museum’s historic grounds. The parade celebrates the spirit of the original events with creativity, laughter, and a reminder that Independence Day has always included room for fun alongside tradition.

The parade offers a chance to experience one of New England’s most unusual holiday customs. It’s a celebration where history, humor, and community come together in a way that’s as entertaining today as it was nearly 150 years ago.
