Multiplier with DJ W.O.W. at The Oasis Pub turns the small Bank Street music room into a dance floor on Saturday, August 15, with an opening DJ set followed by two hours of live electronic music. DJ W.O.W. starts the night from 8 to 9 p.m., before New London-area band Multiplier takes over from 9 to 11 p.m.
Multiplier isn’t a conventional rock band with a few electronic elements added around the edges. The group builds its sound from house, EDM, dub, electro-funk, funk, breakbeat, hip-hop and trip-hop, creating music intended for dancing while musicians perform it live. Their shows also lean heavily into the visual side, using lasers, video projections and other multimedia to turn the room into part of the performance.
That approach should be particularly interesting inside The Oasis Pub. Oasis is one of downtown New London’s small independent music rooms, where the stage sits only a few feet from the audience. The venue regularly books emerging bands, underground electronic acts and DJs rather than operating like a traditional concert hall.
About Multiplier
Multiplier comes out of the southeastern Connecticut music scene, with its members playing together in different forms for more than a decade before formalizing the project.
The easiest way to understand them may be to start with the groove.
House and EDM provide some of the foundation, but Multiplier pulls in dub, hip-hop, trip-hop, breakbeat and funk rather than staying inside one electronic genre. They’re also a live electronic band, an important distinction from watching a producer perform a DJ set.
That combination has made Multiplier a good fit for everything from clubs and theaters to outdoor festivals and unconventional parties. The group describes the shows as multimedia experiences incorporating lasers, video screens and digital artists alongside the music.
They’ve been particularly active around New London this summer. Multiplier hosted its fifth annual Summer Party at Hygienic Art Park in June and played the Connecticut College Arboretum’s new Summer Concert Series in July.
Now they’re squeezing all of that into Oasis.
DJ W.O.W. Opens the Night
DJ W.O.W. starts the evening with a one-hour set from 8 to 9 p.m.
DJ W.O.W. has previously appeared on downtown bills, including sets associated with The Social, and has already shared a bill with Multiplier this year. The two acts performed together at The Social in March, where Multiplier was similarly presented as a dance-focused mix of house, EDM, dub, electro-funk, breakbeat, hip-hop and trip-hop.
That makes Saturday’s pairing at Oasis less random than it might appear. W.O.W. gets the room moving first. Then the live band takes over.
Inside The Oasis Pub
Oasis has been part of New London’s alternative music culture for years.
It’s a small, 21-and-over craft beer bar and live music room at 16 Bank Street, with the bar running along much of the space and the stage tucked into the back. On show nights, that leaves an open area in front of the stage for the crowd.
There are no giant video walls separating the performers from the audience. No distant seats.
For a band that actively wants people dancing, that intimacy works.
Oasis also puts unusual emphasis on its beer selection, currently advertising 20 drafts and more than 60 cans, alongside wine, canned cocktails, cider, nonalcoholic options and other drinks.
Saturday hours run from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., so the bar remains open after Multiplier’s scheduled set ends.
Two Different Kinds of Electronic Performance
There’s a nice progression built into the schedule.
From 8 to 9 p.m., DJ W.O.W. controls the room from the decks.
At 9 p.m., Multiplier changes the equation. Electronic music becomes a live-band performance, with musicians creating the rhythms, textures and improvisations in real time while the visual production fills the room.
By 11, Oasis may feel considerably smaller than it did when the doors opened.
