Lainey Wilson Brings Her Country Music Hits to Mohegan Sun’s 30th Anniversary Celebration
The concert is part of Mohegan Sun’s 30th birthday festivities, which bring three major Arena performances to the resort on consecutive nights. John Mayer performs Friday, Wilson takes the stage Saturday and DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic Live! closes the weekend Sunday with a lineup of hip-hop stars.
For Wilson, the appearance comes after a remarkable run of awards, chart-topping singles and sold-out tours that have established her among contemporary country music’s leading performers.
From a Louisiana Farm to Nashville
Wilson grew up in Baskin, Louisiana, a farming community with a population of only a few hundred people. Her father was a farmer, her mother a schoolteacher, and country music was part of everyday life. She began writing songs as a child and developed an early interest in performing, eventually working as a Hannah Montana impersonator at birthday parties, fairs and other events.
In 2011, she moved to Nashville, where she lived in a camper trailer while trying to establish herself in the music business. The years that followed were filled with songwriting, small performances and the uncertainty familiar to musicians trying to break into country music’s competitive recording industry.
Her breakthrough finally arrived with Things a Man Oughta Know, which became her first major country radio hit in 2021. The song introduced audiences to a performer whose distinctive Louisiana accent, traditional country influences and direct storytelling set her apart from much of contemporary Nashville.
Her 2022 album Bell Bottom Country gave that sound a name. Combining country, Southern rock, blues and elements of 1970s popular music, the record established Wilson’s musical identity and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Country Album.
Nine No. 1 Hits and Country Music’s Highest Honors
Wilson’s success accelerated with a succession of songs that became staples of country radio. Heart Like a Truck uses the image of a battered pickup to explore emotional resilience, while Watermelon Moonshine revisits the excitement and heartbreak of young romance. 4x4xU turns a familiar country setting, a pickup truck and an open road, into a love song.
Her collaborations have helped broaden her audience. Wilson joined HARDY on wait in the truck, a dramatic narrative involving domestic violence and vigilante justice, and Jelly Roll on Save Me, a song about addiction, despair and the desire for redemption.
Her 2024 album Whirlwind continued that momentum, reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and producing another major hit with 4x4xU. The album’s deluxe edition included Somewhere Over Laredo, a song that draws on the melodic traditions of classic country music.
Wilson has also earned some of the industry’s most prestigious honors. She has twice won Entertainer of the Year from the Country Music Association and twice received the same award from the Academy of Country Music. In 2024, she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, fulfilling a childhood ambition and joining one of country music’s most enduring institutions.
Her success reflects more than record sales. Wilson has built a reputation for energetic live performances, a full country-rock sound and songs that connect personal experiences with themes of perseverance, heartbreak and independence.
New Music and a Connection to John Mayer
Wilson’s newer music continues to expand her catalog, including Phone, Keys, Wallet, a recording featuring guitar by John Mayer. The collaboration creates an interesting connection to Mohegan Sun’s anniversary weekend, since Mayer is scheduled to perform his own solo concert at the Arena on Friday, Oct. 9, one night before Wilson.
The two concerts are separate performances, but the back-to-back appearances bring together artists from different musical backgrounds who have also worked together in the studio.
Wilson’s career has expanded beyond recording and touring. She appeared as Abby in the television series Yellowstone, introducing her to audiences who may not have followed her earlier music. Her rise is also the subject of the Netflix documentary Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool, which explores the experiences and determination behind her success.
Through those projects, Wilson has become a recognizable figure beyond country radio, while maintaining the musical identity that first brought her national attention.
The Castellows Bring Sister Harmonies to the Arena
Joining Wilson are The Castellows, a country trio consisting of sisters Ellie, Powell and Lily Balkcom. Raised in rural Georgia, the sisters grew up singing together and developed a sound built around close three-part harmonies, acoustic instrumentation and traditional country influences.
Their music draws from country and Americana, with an emphasis on vocal arrangements and storytelling. After attracting attention through online performances, the sisters began recording and touring professionally, building an audience around their distinctive family harmonies.
Their appearance offers concertgoers a contrasting musical approach before Wilson’s larger arena production, pairing an emerging country trio with one of the genre’s most successful contemporary headliners.
Three Nights of Major Concerts at Mohegan Sun
Wilson’s performance is one of the featured events marking Mohegan Sun’s 30th anniversary. The resort opened in October 1996 and has grown into one of New England’s major entertainment destinations, with its Arena regularly hosting nationally and internationally recognized performers.
The anniversary weekend begins Friday, Oct. 9, with John Mayer Solo at 8 p.m. Wilson follows Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic Live! concludes the three-night run Sunday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m., featuring Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Jadakiss and Nelly.
The varied lineup reflects the range of entertainment Mohegan Sun has presented over three decades, from singer-songwriters and country stars to hip-hop performers.
For Wilson’s fans, Saturday’s concert brings together the songs and experiences behind one of country music’s most significant success stories of the past several years. Her journey from a camper trailer in Nashville to Grammy Awards and arena stages has become part of her appeal, but it is the music, from Things a Man Oughta Know to Heart Like a Truck and 4x4xU, that remains at the center of her performances.
