John Mayer Returns to Connecticut for Mohegan Sun’s 30th Anniversary Celebration
For Mayer, the performance is also a homecoming. Born in Bridgeport and raised in Fairfield, he developed his passion for guitar as a teenager before leaving Connecticut to pursue a career that would make him one of his generation’s most successful singer-songwriters.
His concert opens a three-night anniversary lineup featuring country superstar Lainey Wilson on Saturday and DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic Live! on Sunday.
From Connecticut to Grammy-Winning Stardom
Mayer’s musical journey began with an admiration for blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, whose influence helped shape his distinctive guitar style. After briefly attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mayer moved to Atlanta, where he performed in clubs and developed the songs that launched his career.
His 2001 debut album, Room for Squares, introduced audiences to No Such Thing, Why Georgia and Your Body Is a Wonderland. The album became a major commercial success, establishing Mayer as a leading voice in the acoustic pop movement of the early 2000s.
His follow-up, Heavier Things, produced Daughters, which earned the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. But Mayer’s 2006 album Continuum would become one of his defining achievements, combining blues-inspired guitar work with sophisticated songwriting on tracks such as Gravity, Waiting on the World to Change and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room.
Over the following years, Mayer expanded his sound through albums including Battle Studies, Born and Raised, The Search for Everything and Sob Rock. His music evolved from acoustic pop toward blues, folk, country and classic rock influences, giving him a varied catalog that continues to attract audiences across generations.
A Guitarist Beyond His Pop Hits
While Mayer’s songwriting made him famous, his guitar playing has earned him recognition far beyond mainstream pop music. His work with the John Mayer Trio showcased his blues influences, while his decade-long involvement with Dead & Company introduced him to the Grateful Dead’s improvisational musical tradition.
Beginning in 2015, Mayer performed alongside former Grateful Dead members, interpreting the band’s extensive catalog and developing a reputation for extended guitar solos and spontaneous musical interplay.
He has also explored more intimate performances through his solo acoustic tours, presenting familiar songs in stripped-down arrangements that emphasize their melodies and lyrics.
Mohegan Sun’s Friday concert is billed as John Mayer Solo, although the specific setlist has not been announced. His extensive catalog includes Your Body Is a Wonderland, Daughters, Gravity, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, New Light and Last Train Home.
A Weekend Celebrating 30 Years of Mohegan Sun
Mayer’s appearance is part of Mohegan Sun’s 30th birthday celebration, marking the resort’s opening in October 1996. Over three decades, the property has grown into one of New England’s premier entertainment destinations, regularly hosting major concerts, sporting events and nationally recognized performers.
The anniversary weekend continues Saturday, Oct. 10, with Lainey Wilson at 7:30 p.m., followed by DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic Live! on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. Sunday’s concert features Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Jadakiss and Nelly.
There is also a musical connection between the Friday and Saturday headliners. Mayer contributed guitar to Wilson’s recording Phone, Keys, Wallet, bringing together two artists from different musical backgrounds who will appear at Mohegan Sun on consecutive evenings.
For Connecticut audiences, Mayer’s concert offers both a celebration of his remarkable career and an opportunity to welcome home a musician whose journey began in Fairfield before taking him to some of the world’s largest stages.
