Bruce Harris’ Birth of the Cool – Celebrating Miles Davis comes to the UNITED Theatre on Friday, July 17, with a special concert honoring the music and enduring legacy of jazz legend Miles Davis. Led by acclaimed trumpeter Bruce Harris and an all-star ensemble, the performance celebrates what would have been Davis’s 100th birthday by presenting the complete Birth of the Cool album live on stage.
Originally recorded between 1949 and 1950, Birth of the Cool transformed the direction of modern jazz by combining the sophistication of chamber music with the spontaneity of improvisation. Widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz recordings ever made, the album introduced a fresh, understated sound through innovative arrangements by Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, and others. Harris and his ensemble recreate the original nine-piece instrumentation, giving audiences a rare opportunity to experience the groundbreaking work as it was intended to be heard.
The evening features every composition from the landmark recording, including classics such as Move, Jeru, Moon Dreams, Boplicity, and Israel. Presented by the Sartori Morales Group at Morgan Stanley and BILT, the concert celebrates one of jazz’s defining artistic achievements while showcasing the timeless influence of Miles Davis.
