Amber Rose and The Renegades at the Rathskeller brings a wide-ranging night of classic and modern rock to Charlestown on Saturday, August 15. At the center is Amber Rose, whose powerful lead vocals allow the band to tackle songs associated with some particularly demanding singers. Rather than staying within one era, the group’s repertoire moves across classic rock and more contemporary material.

That means a set can reach back to the late ’60s and ’70s for Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Jefferson Airplane, move through the arena-rock power of Heart, then jump forward to songs by Adele.

Meet the Band

The five-piece lineup combines musicians with experience in several established regional bands.

Amber Rose handles lead vocals and serves as the group’s frontwoman.

Guitarist Bob Hughes previously performed with Rhode Island bands Eyewitness and Zink Alloy. His role with The Renegades ranges from melodic guitar parts to the heavier solos needed for the band’s classic-rock material.

Ray D’Amico is behind the drums and also manages the band’s bookings. D’Amico previously played with Steve Smith and currently performs with Steve Smith and the Nakeds, a longtime fixture of the Rhode Island music scene.

Keyboardist Keith Denton plays piano, organ and synthesizer and previously performed with Archives and Zink Alloy, along with appearances with What Matters?

Bassist Joe Ortoleva completes the rhythm section and brings experience from groups including Kharisma, Keturah’s Dream and Rough and Ready.

What You’ll Hear

The band’s song selection is designed more like a rock playlist than a tightly defined tribute show.

That opens the door to music spanning several generations. The common denominator is a set built for a live crowd, with prominent vocals, guitar solos and recognizable songs that give people a reason to get out of their seats.

Amber Rose’s voice also gives the group room to explore some of rock’s most distinctive female-fronted material. Songs associated with Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Heart require considerably different vocal approaches, while newer material expands the show beyond a straightforward classic-rock night.

Dinner and Music at the Rathskeller

The Charlestown Rathskeller sits among the trees on Old Coach Road, away from the busier commercial stretches of South County.

Guests can arrive before the show for dinner and drinks, then head outside for the concert. The grounds include outdoor seating, fire pits and lawn games, making the evening feel closer to a backyard summer concert than a conventional indoor club show.
