1/2 Step Affair Sends Off Summer With a Sunset Dance Party in Oyster Club’s Treehouse

1/2 Step Affair brings four DJ sets, sunset views, cocktails, mezcal, and a full Oyster Club dinner to Mystic on Saturday, September 19, as Pressing Plant and 2Primo Studio close out summer with a five-hour dance party in the restaurant’s Treehouse.

The party runs from 5 to 10 p.m. at Oyster Club, 13 Water Street, with D.Bird, Novebloc, Iosnua and Mareas.fm taking turns behind the decks.

The soundtrack is described as a digital-and-vinyl blend of disco, boogie, deep house and Balearic house, beginning during the last golden hour of the day and continuing after sunset.

And this isn’t a nightclub being temporarily decorated to look outdoorsy.

The dance floor really is in the trees.

One Last Golden Hour in the Treehouse

Oyster Club’s Treehouse has become one of downtown Mystic’s more unusual dining spaces.

Built behind and above the restaurant on the hillside overlooking the Mystic River, the seasonal indoor-outdoor space feels removed from Water Street despite sitting only steps from downtown.

For 1/2 Step Affair, tables give way to an open-air dance floor with river views.

That setting explains the timing.

The party begins at 5 p.m., allowing the DJs to soundtrack the final hours of daylight before the Treehouse moves into evening.

Pressing Plant describes it as a “sunset send-off for summer, out among the trees.”

Technically, autumn doesn’t arrive until a few days later.

This is the going-away party.

Four DJs Take It From Daylight Into Night

The evening features four DJ sets:

Novebloc
Iosnua
Mareas.fm

Rather than announcing a conventional band lineup, Pressing Plant and 2Primo Studio are building the evening around continuous DJ programming.

The musical description is unusually specific.

Expect disco and boogie, the dance-floor music that connects the funk and soul of the 1970s with the electronic club music that followed.

Then there’s deep house, generally warmer and more soulful than harder-edged forms of house music.

And Balearic house, a term rooted in the DJ culture of Ibiza and associated less with rigid genre rules than with an eclectic, atmospheric approach to dance music.

The organizers promise both digital and vinyl selections.

In other words, this isn’t being pitched as a Top 40 dance party.

It’s a curated DJ night.

Pressing Plant and 2Primo Studio Are Behind the Party

The event is a collaboration between Pressing Plant and 2Primo Studio, two creative operations joining forces for the end-of-season gathering.

The visual identity makes that collaboration pretty clear.

The event poster looks like something pulled from a late-’70s or early-’80s record sleeve, with its saturated orange-and-yellow palette, oversized hand-drawn lettering and four DJs positioned like a miniature festival bill.

Even the name 1/2 Step Affair fits the record-store sensibility.

The event’s emphasis on vinyl alongside digital DJing takes the aesthetic beyond the poster and onto the dance floor.

This One Comes With Dinner

Here’s the part that makes 1/2 Step Affair considerably different from the usual DJ night.

Dinner is included with the ticket.

Oyster Club will keep food moving throughout the evening, with organizers promising lobster rolls, steak sandwiches, oysters and more straight from the Oyster Club kitchen.

Vegetarian options will also be available.

The event description says dinner will be passed throughout the night, rather than served as a single formal seated meal.

That’s a smart fit for the format.

Nobody has to choose between sitting down for dinner at 7 and catching a DJ set.

Eat.

Dance.

Eat again.

Oyster Club Is a Particularly Good Place to Build the Menu

Oyster Club has spent more than a decade making local sourcing part of its identity.

The restaurant is part of the 85th Day Food Community, the Mystic hospitality group that also includes Engine Room and Port of Call.

Its kitchen is built around relationships with farmers, fishermen and other regional producers, with a menu that changes according to season and availability.

The raw bar is central to the restaurant, so oysters at a Treehouse party aren’t an afterthought.

Neither is seafood generally.

Oyster Club’s regular menu shifts frequently, but locally sourced fish and shellfish, handmade pasta, vegetables and other New England ingredients have long defined chef Reneé Touponce’s cooking.

Touponce serves as executive chef for both Oyster Club and Port of Call and has earned national attention for her work, including recognition from the James Beard Foundation.

For this party, however, the food is deliberately more casual.

Lobster rolls and steak sandwiches make considerably more sense on a dance floor than a multi-course tasting menu.

Madre Mezcal Is Part of the Ticket, Too

The evening also includes signature cocktails and mezcal tastings courtesy of Madre Mezcal.

Madre produces artisanal mezcal in Oaxaca, Mexico, using traditional production methods and agave varieties including espadín and cuishe.

Unlike tequila, which must be made from blue Weber agave, mezcal can be produced from numerous agave varieties.

The spirit is often associated with smoke, but good mezcal can range considerably beyond that stereotype, with earthy, herbal, mineral, fruity and vegetal characteristics depending on the agave, production process and growing region.

The tasting component gives people an opportunity to try mezcal without committing immediately to a full cocktail.

Those who do want the cocktail can head to Oyster Club’s bar.

The Cocktail Program Isn’t an Afterthought

Oyster Club is as serious about drinks as it is about oysters.

Its bar program changes seasonally and is designed to complement the kitchen rather than operate as a separate attraction.

For 1/2 Step Affair, the organizers are specifically promising signature cocktails, with Madre integrated into the evening.

That combination makes sense with the music.

A five-hour sunset DJ party doesn’t really call for a conventional beer-festival setup.

This is closer to a long dinner party that slowly becomes a dance party.

Except the dinner party is in a treehouse.

Oyster Club Has Been Part of Mystic Since 2012

Oyster Club opened in 2012, helping establish a new generation of food-focused restaurants in downtown Mystic.

The restaurant occupies a converted historic building on Water Street, but the Treehouse gave it something entirely different from the dining room downstairs.

The elevated space became a seasonal destination of its own.

It’s used for regular lunch and dinner service when weather permits, along with private gatherings and special events.

The Treehouse can be tented and heated as temperatures cool, but 1/2 Step Affair is specifically leaning into its open-air character.

The river views and trees aren’t background decoration.

They’re part of the event.

September 19 Is Almost the Perfect Date for It

The timing works unusually well for something being billed as a farewell to summer.

September 19 falls just days before the autumnal equinox.

Mystic is still in its warm-weather rhythm, but the peak July and August crush has begun to ease.

The days are getting noticeably shorter.

And by the time the party begins at 5, the sun is already moving toward the western horizon.

That’s precisely what Pressing Plant is trying to capture with the phrase “the last golden hour of the season.”

It’s not literally the final sunset of summer.

It doesn’t need to be.

The point is the feeling.

Summer is almost over.

Everyone knows it.

So put a record on.

Tickets Are Limited

Unlike a normal evening at Oyster Club, this is a ticketed 21+ event with limited capacity.

That matters because the Treehouse is intentionally intimate.

This isn’t a thousand-person outdoor festival with a stage at one end and food trucks at the other.

The DJs, bar, kitchen service and dance floor all share the same elevated space.

Tickets include the evening’s dinner and the Madre mezcal component, with additional beverages available through Oyster Club.

Because capacity is limited, this is one to book rather than treating as a casual drop-in.

Five Hours, Four DJs and One Last Night in the Trees

There are plenty of ways to mark the end of summer around Mystic.

Most involve a beach, a boat or one final lobster roll.

1/2 Step Affair manages to work the lobster roll in while doing something completely different.

Four DJs.

Vinyl and digital sets.

Disco, boogie and house music.

Mezcal.

Oysters.

A dance floor above the Mystic River.

And five hours beginning in daylight and ending well after dark.

Summer doesn’t officially leave until a few days later.

But it gets a pretty good send-off September 19.
