Event Description
Sip N’ Spin – Oct. 30th invites adults to trade their usual Friday night plans for a pottery wheel, a little clay, and their favorite wine or beer at the Stonington Community Center on Friday, October 30.
From 6 to 8 p.m., participants will get a hands-on introduction to pottery making, beginning with a professional wheel-throwing demonstration before trying their own hand at shaping clay into something worth keeping.
The workshop combines creative instruction with a relaxed BYOB atmosphere, making it an appealing outing for couples, friends, or anyone curious about what happens when a lump of clay meets a spinning wheel.
And unlike some creative workshops where the finished project goes home the same night, this experience includes professional glazing and firing, with three completed pieces ready for pickup approximately four weeks later.
Watch the Wheel, Then Give It a Spin
The evening begins with a demonstration of professional wheel throwing, the pottery technique that uses a rotating wheel to shape clay into vessels and other forms.
Participants will see how a potter works with the spinning clay before receiving instruction on creating their own pieces.
There’s something fascinating about watching an ordinary mound of clay take shape on a pottery wheel. What begins as a simple ball of material can gradually become a bowl, cup, or another handmade creation.
Of course, the real fun begins when it’s your turn.
With guidance from the instructor, participants will have an opportunity to experience the process firsthand, discovering how pressure, movement, and a steady touch help shape the clay.
The workshop also includes handbuilding, allowing guests to explore pottery techniques that don’t require a wheel.
Whether your creation comes out perfectly symmetrical or develops a personality all its own, the evening is about trying something new and enjoying the creative process.
Bring Your Favorite Wine or Beer
As the name suggests, Sip N’ Spin combines pottery making with a casual evening of sipping your favorite beverage.
Participants are invited to bring their own wine or beer to enjoy during the workshop.
The BYOB format gives the class a social atmosphere, whether you’re attending with a partner, meeting up with friends, or making pottery alongside new acquaintances.
It’s an alternative to the usual dinner-and-drinks outing, with the added benefit of learning a skill and creating something tangible.
And with Halloween arriving the following evening, the Friday night workshop offers a creative way to kick off the holiday weekend without the crowds of a costume party.
Three Handmade Pieces to Take Home
The workshop fee includes clay, glazing, and firing for three pottery pieces.
After the class, the instructor will handle the glazing and firing process, transforming the pieces into finished pottery.
Because ceramic work requires time to dry, glaze, and fire, participants won’t take their creations home immediately.
Instead, finished pieces will be available approximately four weeks after the workshop.
Participants will receive an email when their pottery is ready for pickup at the COMO Pottery Studio at 45 Cutler Street in Stonington.
That means the experience doesn’t end when the workshop is over. A few weeks later, guests will have the satisfaction of collecting something they made themselves.
