Aquarium Unlocked – A 21+ Afterhours Experience opens parts of Mystic Aquarium normally off-limits to visitors for an adults-only evening of behind-the-scenes access, animal encounters, cocktails and conversations with the people doing the aquarium’s conservation work.
The limited-capacity event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 12. Admission includes a complimentary cocktail, light bites throughout the evening, special animal encounters, access to rarely seen areas of the aquarium, and a sea lion presentation created specifically for the after-hours crowd.
And unlike a normal visit, the animals aren’t the only attraction. Aquarium Unlocked puts the scientists, trainers, animal-care professionals, and conservation work behind Mystic Aquarium into the foreground.
What Happens After the Aquarium Closes?
Most visitors experience an aquarium from one side of the glass.
They see the finished exhibit, watch an animal feeding or presentation, and move on to the next habitat. What they generally don’t see are the working areas required to care for those animals or the people whose jobs continue after the public leaves.
Aquarium Unlocked is designed to change that.
Guests will have access to behind-the-scenes areas around the campus that aren’t normally part of a general admission visit. They’ll also have opportunities to meet members of the Mystic Aquarium team and learn more about the research, animal care and conservation programs taking place in Mystic and far beyond Connecticut.
Up-close animal encounters are included during the evening, although the aquarium hasn’t announced a complete list of participating animals in advance.
That’s part of the idea. Rather than following the normal daytime route, guests get a more intimate look at how an aquarium actually works.
A Special Night With the Sea Lions
One experience Mystic Aquarium has confirmed is a special sea lion presentation.
The aquarium is home to California sea lions, animals whose intelligence, agility and responsiveness make their training sessions entertaining to watch but also serve a practical purpose.
Modern zoological training isn’t simply about teaching animals tricks.
Positive-reinforcement training can help animal-care teams perform health checks and other routine procedures with an animal’s voluntary participation. Behaviors can make it possible to examine parts of an animal’s body, monitor its condition and perform aspects of veterinary care while reducing stress.
During a normal day, Mystic Aquarium’s sea lion presentations introduce thousands of visitors to the animals. Aquarium Unlocked moves that experience into a smaller after-hours event and pairs it with access to the people who work with aquatic animals every day.
Meet the People Behind the Animals
Mystic Aquarium has been part of southeastern Connecticut since 1973, but its work extends well beyond operating a public attraction in Mystic.
The organization combines animal care and public education with scientific research and conservation programs.
Its research has included work involving marine mammals, animal health, ocean environments and threatened species. Mystic Aquarium also participates in field conservation programs, including efforts involving African penguins, whose wild populations have declined dramatically.
The aquarium’s work is supported in part by scientists and conservation professionals associated with its research programs, while animal-care teams apply veterinary science, behavioral training and husbandry to the animals living on campus.
Aquarium Unlocked gives guests a chance to connect those two sides of the institution.
Instead of simply reading a conservation panel beside an exhibit, visitors can hear from some of the people actually involved in the work and ask questions about what they’re doing.
The Rescue Work Most Visitors Never See
Another important part of Mystic Aquarium’s mission happens when an animal isn’t part of the aquarium’s collection at all.
Its Animal Rescue Program responds to stranded marine mammals and sea turtles along the Connecticut, Rhode Island and Fishers Island, New York coastlines.
The program operates a rehabilitation facility in Mystic where rescued seals can receive medical treatment and care before being returned to the ocean when they’re healthy enough for release.
Those releases are the goal.
The aquarium’s rescue work has treated numerous stranded animals over the years, while its teams and volunteers also collect information that contributes to scientists’ understanding of marine mammal health and the challenges facing wild populations.
Mystic Aquarium directs donations toward marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation as one of its core conservation efforts.
For guests at Aquarium Unlocked, the behind-the-scenes emphasis offers a chance to see the institution less as a collection of exhibits and more as a working marine science and animal-care organization.
Belugas Put Mystic Aquarium in Rare Company
Mystic Aquarium’s beluga whales are among its most recognizable residents.
The Arctic and sub-Arctic whales are immediately identifiable by their white coloration as adults, rounded foreheads and remarkable vocal abilities. Their range of whistles, chirps, clicks and other sounds helped earn them the nickname “canaries of the sea.”
Mystic’s relationship with belugas has also made the aquarium an important location for research involving the species.
Scientists have used opportunities at accredited aquariums to study physiology, behavior, hearing and other aspects of marine mammal biology that can be extraordinarily difficult to investigate consistently in the wild.
That research can then contribute to broader understanding of wild populations facing changing Arctic environments.
Aquarium Unlocked’s emphasis on meeting the people behind the conservation work gives visitors a chance to consider animals like the belugas from that perspective: not only as remarkable animals to see, but as ambassadors for species and ecosystems thousands of miles from Connecticut.
Cocktails and Light Bites Without the Daytime Crowds
This isn’t simply a nighttime version of regular admission.
Aquarium Unlocked is exclusively for guests 21 and older, giving the aquarium a very different atmosphere once its daytime visitors have gone home.
Admission includes one complimentary cocktail, and light bites will be served throughout the evening.
The combination makes the event part behind-the-scenes tour, part conservation program and part night out. Guests can wander through the aquarium, have a drink, encounter animals and talk with staff without navigating the daytime family crowds.
Capacity is intentionally limited.
That matters for an event built around access. Smaller attendance makes the animal encounters, behind-the-scenes areas and conversations with aquarium professionals substantially different from trying to provide the same experiences during a normal operating day.
Don’t Wait Until Saturday to Buy a Ticket
There is one particularly important detail for anyone deciding at the last minute.
Ticket sales end Friday, September 11, the day before Aquarium Unlocked.
Current admission is $65 for Mystic Aquarium members and $75 for nonmembers. Those prices are in effect through September 11. An earlier early-bird period, which ended August 21, offered tickets at $55 for members and $65 for nonmembers.
Tickets are limited, so the event can sell out before the sales deadline.
For visitors accustomed to experiencing Mystic Aquarium during the day, the value here isn’t simply another opportunity to see the exhibits. It’s access to the parts of the institution and the people behind them that a regular admission ticket generally doesn’t provide.
For one Saturday night, the aquarium itself becomes the exhibit.
