UnderEstimated Prophet at the Charlestown Rathskeller
UnderEstimated Prophet at the Charlestown Rathskeller brings an afternoon of Grateful Dead music, extended jams and improvisation to the Rathskeller’s outdoor Down Back stage on Sunday, August 23.
The six-piece regional band performs from 4 to 7 p.m., with advance tickets priced at $10 plus fees and admission at the door priced at $15.
It’s an early Sunday show designed for exactly the kind of setting the Rathskeller provides: music outside beneath the trees, something to eat and drink nearby, and three hours for the band to stretch well beyond the confines of the original recordings.
Keeping the Grateful Dead Tradition Alive
UnderEstimated Prophet is a six-piece band dedicated to performing the music of the Grateful Dead, but that doesn’t mean simply reproducing studio recordings note for note.
Improvisation was fundamental to the Dead. Songs could change dramatically from one performance to another, with extended instrumental passages connecting songs and allowing the musicians to follow one another into unexpected territory.
UnderEstimated Prophet embraces that approach with a jam-forward live show built around the Dead’s extensive catalog.
That gives the band decades of music to explore, from psychedelic rock and blues to folk, country and Americana. The familiar songs provide the framework. What happens between and inside them is where a Dead tribute can become something different every time it takes the stage.
What’s in a Name?
Deadheads should recognize the band’s name immediately.
“Estimated Prophet” appeared on the Grateful Dead’s 1977 album Terrapin Station and became a regular part of the band’s live repertoire. Written by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow, the song was frequently used as a launching point for the kind of extended improvisation that became a hallmark of Grateful Dead concerts.
UnderEstimated Prophet adds a playful twist to that title while making the band’s musical allegiance pretty difficult to miss.
The group has developed a regional following by focusing on both the songs and communal atmosphere surrounding the Dead’s music. The goal isn’t elaborate impersonation. It’s recreating the experience of musicians and an audience sharing an unpredictable live performance.
Three Hours Leaves Room to Jam
A three-hour afternoon performance gives UnderEstimated Prophet room to work.
Grateful Dead music lends itself particularly well to longer sets because songs don’t necessarily exist as isolated performances. One can dissolve into an instrumental passage before gradually revealing the beginning of another.
That makes Sunday’s show different from a conventional tribute concert built around squeezing as many recognizable hits as possible into a fixed set.
Fans can certainly expect familiar Dead material, but the appeal is just as much about where the band takes it.
And if you’ve never understood why someone would follow the Grateful Dead from city to city listening to many of the same songs, a live jam-oriented tribute provides a pretty good introduction. The songs may be familiar. The performance isn’t supposed to be.
Sunday Afternoon Down Back
The setting should suit the music particularly well.
The Charlestown Rathskeller’s Down Back outdoor entertainment area sits behind the historic tavern on its wooded Old Coach Road property.
The grounds have the feel of a small park, with an outdoor stage surrounded by trees along with bars, seating, a fire pit and lawn games including bocce and cornhole.
Throughout the warmer months, Down Back hosts regional bands, touring musicians and tribute acts.
Sunday’s 4 p.m. start also changes the feel from a typical nighttime concert. Guests can arrive for lunch, grab a drink and settle outside before the band begins, with the performance running into the early evening.
A Charlestown Landmark Since 1933
The Rathskeller itself has been part of Charlestown since 1933, giving the property a history extending back to the Prohibition era.
Today, the restaurant and tavern combine that rustic setting with a full food menu and a substantial seasonal live-music schedule.
The menu features tavern favorites including burgers and sandwiches along with steaks, seafood and shareable dishes, making it easy to turn the concert into an afternoon of lunch, drinks and music rather than treating it as a stand-alone performance.
Concert seating Down Back is festival-style and first-come, first-served. Admission does not reserve a particular table or seat, so guests who want to settle into a preferred spot should consider arriving before the music begins.
