There are weekends when you go to downtown Mystic with a plan.
This probably shouldn’t be one of them.
The Downtown Mystic Sidewalk Sale returns Friday through Sunday, August 14–16, as shops move racks, tables, and merchandise outside and mark down end-of-summer inventory, in some cases by as much as 70%.
But here’s the thing: I’d resist the temptation to treat this like a shopping trip where you park, hit three stores, and head home.
The fun is wandering.
Start on one side of the river. Check the racks outside a store you’ve walked past a dozen times. Cross the drawbridge. Grab some lunch. Find something you didn’t know you wanted. Get an ice cream. Then convince yourself you’re only going into one more store.
We’ve all heard that one before.
This Isn’t a Traditional Street Market
The Sidewalk Sale works a little differently from most summer markets.
There isn’t a collection of outside vendors setting up temporary booths. The downtown businesses themselves are the event.
Participating merchants bring merchandise onto the sidewalks while offering additional specials inside their stores. That means what you find changes from one storefront to the next.
Expect bargains on things like:
- Clothing and seasonal apparel
- Jewelry and accessories
- Home décor
- Gifts and souvenirs
- Specialty merchandise
- End-of-summer inventory
- New England and Mystic-themed goods
Individual stores determine their own merchandise and discounts, with advertised markdowns reaching up to 70% off.
There’s no master inventory list telling you what’s waiting around the corner.
Good.
That’s half the fun.
Don’t Stop at the Drawbridge
If you’re going, shop both sides of Mystic.
It’s surprisingly easy to forget that downtown Mystic straddles two towns. The Stonington and Groton sides of the Mystic River each have their own collection of independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and specialty businesses, connected by the Mystic River Bascule Bridge.
So cross it.
You might even get temporarily stranded on one side while the bridge goes up. There are worse problems to have on a summer afternoon.
Once the boats pass and the gates reopen, keep wandering.
Friday or Saturday?
If you’re serious about finding the best selection, Friday has the advantage.
The sale begins Friday at 10 a.m., so that’s when you’ll get the first crack at limited sizes, styles, and one-of-a-kind merchandise.
Saturday and Sunday offer longer shopping hours, running until 6 p.m., and give you more time to turn the sale into a full day downtown.
The schedule is:
- Friday, August 14: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
- Saturday, August 15: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
- Sunday, August 16: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Remember that merchandise can disappear as the weekend progresses. If you see something Saturday morning and decide you’ll come back Sunday…
Well, somebody else may have liked it too.
Make Lunch Part of the Plan
One of the advantages of having a sidewalk sale in downtown Mystic is that when you need a break, you’re already surrounded by places to take one.
Stop for lunch. Find a cup of coffee. Grab an ice cream. Walk down toward the river and watch the boats.
Then start shopping again.
That’s why I’d give yourself several hours rather than trying to squeeze the sale between other plans. Downtown Mystic is compact enough to explore on foot, but there’s enough happening on both sides of the river that an hour can disappear surprisingly quickly.
A Few Things I’d Do Before Going
First, wear comfortable shoes.
This is absolutely a walking event, particularly if you’re planning to explore both sides of downtown.
Second, bring a reusable shopping bag. You may tell yourself you’re “just looking,” but those words have betrayed shoppers since the beginning of time.
And don’t assume everything on sale will be sitting outside. The sidewalk displays are meant to catch your attention, but participating merchants may have additional specials and merchandise inside.
About That Parking…
It’s August.
It’s Mystic.
You know where this is going.
Downtown has public lots, metered spaces, and street parking, but summer weekends can be extremely busy. Add a three-day shopping event and you’re going to want to allow some extra time.
My advice is simple: once you’ve found a parking spot, keep it.
Downtown Mystic is made for walking anyway.
Two Big Shopping Events, One Mystic Weekend
There’s another reason this particular weekend could be interesting for bargain hunters.
While downtown merchants are holding the Sidewalk Sale, Vintage Bazaar New England is taking place at Mystic Seaport Museum on Saturday and Sunday, bringing more than 100 vintage dealers, artists, makers, and collectors to the museum grounds.
They’re very different experiences.
Downtown is about local shops and end-of-season deals. The Bazaar is about antiques, vintage goods, handmade pieces, and one-of-a-kind discoveries.
If you really love shopping, you could make an entire Mystic day out of the two.
Go Without a Shopping List
The Downtown Mystic Sidewalk Sale is free to attend, and there really isn’t a right way to do it.
You don’t need a schedule.
You don’t need a shopping list.
And you definitely don’t need to buy anything.
Just start walking.
Because sometimes the best thing you bring home from Mystic is the thing you had absolutely no intention of buying when you arrived.
