About Saltwater Farm Vineyard
Saltwater Farm Vineyard occupies 108 acres along Wequetequock Cove in Stonington, but grapes are only the latest chapter in the property’s unusually long history.
The land traces its agricultural roots to 1653, when Walter Palmer established a farm on roughly 230 acres surrounding the cove. Portions of that original property continued operating as farmland into the early 20th century.
Then airplanes arrived.
During the late 1930s, William J. Foster established a small community airport on the property called Foster Field, also known as Westone Airport. A hangar was designed by Stonington architect and engineer John W. Lincoln, who is credited with sharing in the development of the Quonset hut.
The federal government closed the airport to public use after the United States entered World War II. Flying returned after the war when Henry R. Palmer Jr. operated Aero-Marine Service there, offering commercial flights and flight training.
That venture lasted only a few years.
Over the following decades, the old hangar was put to work as a warehouse, restaurant and manufacturing facility before eventually falling into disuse.
From Airfield to Vineyard
Michael Connery purchased the dormant property in 2001 and began its transformation into Saltwater Farm Vineyard.
Rather than demolish the old airport infrastructure, the project preserved it.
The vintage hangar was restored and converted into the winery, retaining its enormous timber trusses and original wood sheathing while adding a milled-aluminum exterior and modern winemaking facilities. Even the grassy landing strip was retained as part of the property.
The result doesn’t look quite like any other winery in southeastern Connecticut. You can sit with a glass of wine beside rows of vines while looking toward a building that once housed airplanes.
Wine and the Coastal Setting
Saltwater Farm is bordered by the tidal marshes of Wequetequock Cove, giving the property a decidedly coastal character.
The vineyard produces small-batch wines influenced by southern New England’s maritime growing conditions, with the property itself providing much of the experience during warmer months.
Friday’s performance takes advantage of that setting. This isn’t a show where everyone faces a stage in rows of seats. It’s meant to be an evening at the vineyard with live music folded into it.
Arriving near the beginning of the 5-to-7 p.m. window also gives visitors the chance to see the property while there’s still plenty of daylight.
