This weekend, there is essentially only one film being discussed. Spider- Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters riding high expectations, exceptional early reviews and the hype necessary to blanket all of southeastern Connecticut’s theaters. If you’ve been counting down the days until Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster, chances are you will be in a theater seat with a tub of popcorn.
However, not everyone wants to see webbed crusaders saving the world.
Located roughly 15 miles outside of Mystic, one theater is providing the chance to see something completely different. I Want Your Sex is a raunchy comedy for adults only that’s receiving high praise itself and serves as polar opposite to Spider- Man.
Whether you’re in the mood to see the biggest movie of the summer or an eclectic independent that pushes the envelope, this weekend’s box office has something for everyone.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (PG-13)
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hype is through the roof, and initial reviews are showing audiences that Marvel has another hit on their hands. Certified Fresh with 91% Critics score and a 98% Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Picking up the pieces after an alternate universe forgets Peter Parker, Tom Holland is having his breakout year with critics saying it’s his best performance of the franchise so far. There are plenty of great Spider-Man swinging scenes and epic set pieces but critics agree the heart of this movie is Peter’s emotionality as he deals with isolation, maturing and wanting to keep his loved ones safe.
Brand New Day is shaping up to be everything you could want in a summer blockbuster and crowds favorite superhero movie.
Our Take: With stellar audience scores and high praise from critics who loved the action as well as Tom Holland’s performance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is an easy recommendation and looks to be a must see film of the summer.

I Want Your Sex (R)
If you’re tired of superhero flicks, I Want Your Sex could not be any more different. The bold black comedy is receiving early praise from critics who highlight Wilde and Hoffman’s adventurous performances in a witty, fashion-forward movie that play likes nothing else screening in theaters this weekend.
I Want Your Sex centers around a young artist who gets a job working for a renowned painter, quickly becoming engulfed in themes of obsession, power, betrayal and murder after becoming her newest sexual muse. Critics describe the film as outrageous, provocative, and surprisingly thoughtful, balancing over-the-top comedy with sharp observations about relationships, art, and modern sexuality.
Movies like this aren’t for everyone. Rated R for explicit sexual material (we can’t show you the studio’s trailer, either), if you’re down to check out something wildly different from what else is playing this summer, you’ll probably want to drive out to Lisbon and watch this one.
Our Take: With Olivia Wilde giving one of her most adventurous performances to date and critics loving the film’s irreverent tone, it’s looking like a solid pick for adults interested in checking out something fresh, hilarious, and raunchy.

Evil Dead Burn (R)
Horror fans have had one great film after another this summer. This is a sequel, but that doesn’t prevent it from effectively delivering the terror.
Moana (PG)
Almost a scene by scene recreation of the animated film. Never has Disney’s cash play been more evident than with this one. Watch the animated version instead.
Minions & Monsters (PG)
The Minions are back in a wild, laugh-filled adventure that mixes Hollywood, monsters, and plenty of their trademark chaos. When their biggest mistake yet puts the whole world in danger, it’s up to the lovable troublemakers to save the day.
The Odyssey (R)
A gargantuan Hollywood spectacle which don’t get made any longer. A beautifully filmed, written, directed and acted gem which is a top contender for every department in the Oscar race.
Toy Story 5 (PG)
The toys grapple with technology. When Lilypad, a tablet programmed with her own thoughts on what deserves Bonnie’s attention, arrives, toys and screens compete to keep up in a world vastly different from when they first “woke up.”
