Historic Stonington Annual Meeting: Portraits of Patriots brings acclaimed Revolutionary War historian Damien Cregeau to the La Grua Center on Sunday, July 19, for a fascinating presentation exploring Connecticut’s role in America’s fight for independence through the artwork of one of the nation’s most celebrated painters. Free and open to the public, the program is part of Historic Stonington’s 2026 Annual Meeting.
Cregeau’s presentation, Portraits of Patriots: Colonel John Trumbull and Five Fellow Patriots From Connecticut in the American Revolution, examines the life and work of Colonel John Trumbull, the Connecticut-born artist whose paintings became some of the most enduring images of the Revolutionary War. While best known for his monumental historical paintings, Trumbull also created portraits of many of the leaders who shaped the nation’s founding.
The program also highlights five Connecticut patriots connected to Trumbull’s work, offering insight into their contributions during the American Revolution and the lasting legacy they left on the state and the nation. Cregeau, a nationally recognized historian and author, has spent decades researching Revolutionary War history and has written extensively on Connecticut’s role in the conflict.
