July 9, 2026
If you’re tired of the summer heat, grab some popcorn, a comfy seat and check out what’s playing at area theaters this weekend. Whether you’re in the mood for some family fun, caped crusaders, historical drama, or blood splattered terror, you’ll find something to enjoy.
This week we highlight two of the biggest new releases: Moana and Evil Dead Burn. You’ll also find a list of everything else still showing, like Supergirl, Minions and Monsters, Young Washington, Disclosure Day and more.
Enjoy your weekend, I’ll see you at the Mystic Luxury Theaters.
Watch the Animated Version (PG)
Disney’s live-action take on Moana is bombing with critics so far, holding at a mediocre 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. Many critics are praising newcomer Catherine Laga’aia and Disney’s respectful portrayal of Polynesian culture, most reviews agree that there’s no point to the movie other than to watch the story from the original animated 2016 movie.
It’s a lazy remake that plays virtually beat for beat like the animated version. A gorgeously photographed, but soulless copy. If you haven’t seen Moana before then you might like it, but otherwise you’re probably better off watching the original at home.
It’s playing everywhere:
- Mystic Luxury Cinemas
- Regal Waterford
- AMC Classic Lisbon 12
- Westbrook Cinemas 12
- Mansfield Movieplex
- Showcase Warwick
Die-Hard Horror Fans Rejoice (R)
Summer has been treating horror fans right. From the twisted psychological horror of Obsession to the downright uncanny horror of Backrooms, summer has been seemingly loaded with horror movies aplenty for fans of the genre. Evil Dead Burn has earned itself an incredible 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason.
Evil Dead Burn does nothing revolutionary for the franchise, but what it does do is what fans of the original know they are going to get. Over-the-top gore, terrifying Deadites, and buckets upon buckets of blood. Some reviews cite the lack of dark comedy that surrounded the original Evil Dead movies, but who cares? If you want a bloody, crazy, guts-filled horror movie, Evil Dead Burn is your ticket this summer.
It’s playing at the following theaters:
Still In Theaters
Backrooms (R)
The viral internet story makes it to the big screen as the main characters roam a seemingly endless maze of hallways and rooms; the soon-to-be cult classic.
Disclosure Day (PG-13)
Spielberg’s return to extraterrestrials, but without the cuteness. What’s out there? What aren’t we being told? Some say it’s his best work in 25 years.
Minions & Monsters (PG)
The Minions are back in a wild, laugh-filled adventure that mixes Hollywood, monsters, and plenty of their trademark chaos. When their biggest mistake yet puts the whole world in danger, it’s up to the lovable troublemakers to save the day.
Obsession (R)
Tensions boil over when a man crosses too many lines with his new girlfriend in this blockbuster horror film.
Supergirl (PG-13)
Kara, Superman’s cousin, is given her own movie, which failed to find an audience last summer’s Superman but has received great reviews nonetheless.
Toy Story 5 (PG)
The toys grapple with technology. When Lilypad, a tablet programmed with her own thoughts on what deserves Bonnie’s attention, arrives, toys and screens compete to keep up in a world vastly different from when they first “woke up.”
Young Washington (PG-13)
Before he became America’s first president, George Washington was a young soldier facing impossible choices on a dangerous frontier. This historical drama follows the events that shaped the courage, leadership, and character of the man who would one day lead a nation.
