Mystic may be known for seafood, waterfront views, and summer crowds spilling across downtown sidewalks, but the Italian restaurant scene around town has quietly become one of the area’s biggest surprises.

And one of the best meals in the area isn’t technically in Mystic at all.

The pizzas have become the restaurant’s signature. Technically, Buon Appetito isn’t in Mystic.

But if you’re willing to drive about 17 miles outside town, it might end up being one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

Unlike many restaurants closer to downtown Mystic, Buon Appetito draws a strong repeat customer base from southeastern Connecticut.. Less curated. Less tourist-driven. More like the kind of place people have been returning to for years because they know exactly what they’re getting.

Huge portions, classic Italian-American comfort dishes, pizza, hearty pasta plates, and relaxed hospitality define the experience here. The atmosphere feels welcoming and familiar in a way that’s becoming harder to find in heavily visited tourist areas.

After a few days navigating crowded sidewalks and packed dining rooms in Mystic, Buon Appetito’s quieter atmosphere offers a contrast to the heavier crowds in downtown Mystic..
