The 26th Annual Pawcatuck River Duck Race
The Pawcatuck River Duck Race returns for its 26th year, bringing one of the region’s most recognizable community traditions back to the Pawcatuck River. Each spring, thousands gather in downtown Westerly–Pawcatuck to watch as 20,000 rubber ducks are released into the river, racing toward the finish line in a colorful, fast-moving spectacle.
Hosted by the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation, the event raises funds for local programs, schools, and nonprofits. Participants can purchase numbered duck entries for a chance to win from more than 90 prizes, including a grand prize of either $2,500 in cash or a family trip to Walt Disney World. In addition to the main race, local businesses take part in a Corporate Duck Race, competing for their own cash prize and adding to the day’s excitement.
The event begins at Donahue Park, with festivities starting at 11:30 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon. Alongside the races, visitors can expect live music, food vendors, and a range of family-friendly activities, including games and entertainment throughout the day. The Corporate Duck Race kicks off at 1 p.m., followed by the main duck race at 1:30 p.m.
Duck entries are available in advance through the chamber, local schools, and participating businesses, as well as on race day. With a mix of community spirit, fundraising, and simple, family-friendly fun, the Pawcatuck River Duck Race continues to draw large crowds each year.
