Before These Crowded Streets by Dave Matthews Band Album Tribute Night brings one of DMB’s most ambitious records to Strange Brew Pub in Norwich on Saturday, August 22.
Beginning at 8 p.m., a six-piece lineup performing as Reckless Minds will play the 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets from beginning to end. Admission is $15, and the show is for ages 21 and older.
Rather than a conventional greatest-hits tribute, the performance is part of Strange Brew’s Album Tribute Night series, which assembles musicians for one-night-only performances of complete albums.
Dave Matthews Band at Its Most Ambitious
Released in April 1998, Before These Crowded Streets arrived after Dave Matthews Band had become one of the biggest touring acts in America.
Instead of simply repeating the formula of Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash, the band made a denser, darker and more experimental record.
Producer Steve Lillywhite, who had worked on the band’s previous albums, returned for the project. The sessions expanded the familiar DMB sound with strings, horns and a long list of guests, including Alanis Morissette, Béla Fleck and the Kronos Quartet.
The result was an album that could move from the explosive “Don’t Drink the Water” to the laid-back groove of “Crush,” then into songs such as “The Stone,” “The Dreaming Tree” and “Spoon.”
Commercially, it was a major success. Before These Crowded Streets debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, famously ending the Titanic soundtrack’s long run at the top of the chart.
Nearly three decades later, the album remains a favorite among longtime Dave Matthews Band listeners, particularly fans drawn to the more adventurous side of the group’s catalog.
The Entire Album, Front to Back
Saturday’s performance follows the original album sequence rather than cherry-picking the most recognizable songs.

Recreating the album requires more than someone playing acoustic guitar and doing a Dave Matthews impression.
Reckless Minds features six musicians covering the guitar, bass, saxophone and percussion-driven arrangements at the heart of the DMB sound.

The inclusion of saxophone is particularly important. Founding Dave Matthews Band saxophonist LeRoi Moore was central to the original group’s sound, frequently functioning as another melodic voice rather than simply adding horn accents.
With three guitars, saxophone, bass and drums, Reckless Minds has assembled a lineup capable of tackling the album’s unusually layered arrangements while adapting them for the intimate Strange Brew stage.
Strange Brew’s Album Tribute Nights
The concert is part of Album Tribute Night, Strange Brew Pub’s continuing series built around a wonderfully simple idea: choose an album and play the whole thing.
Each installment brings together a lineup of musicians for a one-night-only performance rather than presenting a permanent tribute act touring the same show.
That opens the door to albums that might never support a dedicated tribute band of their own. It also gives audiences something different from a conventional cover-band night. Deep cuts aren’t skipped to make room for hits. If they’re on the record, they’re part of the show.
For Before These Crowded Streets, that approach should work particularly well. The album was conceived as a complete listening experience, and Saturday’s audience gets to hear it the same way.
Live Music Inside a 1741 Building
Strange Brew Pub occupies a colonial-era building dating to 1741 at 86 Water Street in Norwich’s historic Chelsea Landing District.
That puts a 1998 Dave Matthews Band album inside a room that was already more than 250 years old when the record came out.
Today, Strange Brew operates as a neighborhood pub and one of downtown Norwich’s regular live-music destinations, hosting original performers, cover bands, tribute nights and other events.
Its relatively intimate setting also changes the character of music originally associated with amphitheaters and arenas. Instead of watching from across a massive venue, the audience is only feet from the musicians attempting to reconstruct one of DMB’s most musically complex records.
