Don’t Tell Mom at The Oasis Pub
Don’t Tell Mom at The Oasis Pub brings a full night of house and dance music to downtown New London on Friday, August 14, with Brian Carter and Nové Bloc returning to the party and Miami-based DJ Grahm Radio making his Connecticut debut.
This isn’t a conventional concert with a headliner, an opener and everybody staring toward a stage. Don’t Tell Mom is built around the dance floor. The music moves through house, disco, deep grooves and electronic sounds, with the DJs handing the room from one set to the next as the night progresses.
There’s also considerably more experience behind this lineup than the names alone suggest. Carter has been involved in underground dance music for more than three decades, while the two DJs behind Nové Bloc bring touring and recording backgrounds to their sets. Grahm Radio adds another angle entirely: a house DJ and music curator who has developed an international following around his weekly Immersive Groove mixes.
Brian Carter
Carter was born in London and began his musical life playing percussion in the British new wave scene. After moving to the United States, he became involved with San Francisco’s early underground rave culture before establishing Dancebeatroute, an event series that helped take his work to both coasts.
His background includes some of the Northeast’s longest-running club residencies as well as early dance-music boat parties in New York City. These days, his sets can move through disco, jazz house, soulful grooves and house, reflecting a record collection accumulated over decades rather than one narrow electronic genre.
That history makes him something of an elder statesman on Friday’s bill. He’s not playing at house music. He’s been around it long enough to have watched entire generations of the scene come and go.
Nové Bloc
Nové Bloc is the DJ partnership of Jaromir Kurty and Greg Tessitore.
Together, the pair bring more than a decade of touring experience, including performances both in the United States and internationally. They’ve also released music through established record labels while accumulating the kind of enormous personal music libraries that tend to happen when DJs spend years searching for the next record nobody else in the room thought to play.
Their sets aren’t confined strictly to contemporary house. The duo has also leaned into disco and older dance records, which gives Don’t Tell Mom room to move backward and forward through dance music rather than staying locked into one sound all night.
Grahm Radio Makes His Connecticut Debut
The wildcard on Friday’s lineup is Grahm Radio, making what organizers bill as his Connecticut debut.
Grahm Radio is a Miami-based house DJ, producer and music curator whose work centers on discovering and sharing new house music. His ongoing Immersive Groove series is a weekly deep-tech mix built partly from music submitted to him by artists and record labels around the world.
His background isn’t limited to DJing. Grahm Radio has described growing up on an unusually broad musical diet that included classic rock, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead before discovering house music and jam bands in college. He began DJing around 2019 and launched the Grahm Radio project in 2020.
The project has grown into more than a series of mixes. He now operates a community centered on unreleased house music, sharing large weekly collections of unreleased tracks with subscribers and highlighting new producers through his platform.
For a small Bank Street room in New London, that’s a pretty interesting guest to drop into the lineup.
An Electronic Night Inside Oasis
The Oasis Pub is particularly well suited to a night like this because there isn’t much distance between performer and crowd.
The 21+ Bank Street bar has developed a reputation as one of downtown New London’s small independent music rooms, regularly hosting local musicians, touring underground acts and DJ nights. Its size is part of the appeal. This isn’t a cavernous nightclub with the DJ somewhere across the room.
When Oasis fills, it fills.
The bar itself has a strong craft-beer identity, with a rotating selection that emphasizes Connecticut and regional breweries alongside canned drinks, cocktails and nonalcoholic options. Friday hours extend until 2 a.m., giving Don’t Tell Mom plenty of room to keep going after the 9 p.m. start.
And the event description’s promise of a dance floor that keeps moving “until you’re legally not allowed to be in the venue anymore”?
Oasis closes at 2.
