Home Free at Sun Patio
Home Free at Sun Patio brings the award-winning country a cappella group to Mohegan Sun on Saturday, August 15, for an outdoor concert built entirely around the human voice. The five-man group takes the stage at 8 p.m., mixing country standards, pop songs, original music, vocal percussion, and the close harmonies that have helped turn Home Free from an a cappella competition winner into an international touring act.
No guitars. No drums. No backing band. What sounds like a full rhythm section is created vocally, with bass notes dropping underneath layered harmonies and beatboxing supplying the percussion. Home Free applies that formula to everything from Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” to modern country and pop, then breaks up the music with the easygoing humor that has become a regular part of its concerts. Unlike Mohegan Sun’s free Friday-night Party on the Sun Patio shows, Home Free is part of the separately ticketed Sun Patio Concert Series. The Saturday series is open to all ages, general admission, standing room only, and held outdoors rain or shine. Food trucks, pizza, popcorn, and beverages will be available throughout the evening.
About Home Free
Home Free has been around considerably longer than many people first encountering the group on television may realize.
The group formed in Minnesota in 2000 and spent years performing before its breakthrough came in 2013, when Home Free won the fourth season of NBC’s The Sing-Off. The victory led to a recording contract and the 2014 album Crazy Life, which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s country chart.
That was the beginning rather than the peak.
Home Free has since released six Top 3 albums in the United States. Its 2022 album So Long Dixie reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Country Albums chart, followed by As Seen on TV in 2023 and Crazy(er) Life in 2024. (Home Free Music)
The group has also developed an enormous online audience. Home Free reports more than 830 million YouTube views, more than 1.8 million YouTube subscribers, 20 Top 10 hits, and more than 720,000 album equivalents worldwide. Touring has taken the group well beyond the United States to international audiences.
Country Music Without the Instruments
Calling Home Free an a cappella group is accurate, but it doesn’t entirely describe what happens onstage.
The arrangements are built to recreate much of the weight and movement of a conventional country band. Vocal percussion supplies the beat, while an unusually deep bass voice fills the space normally occupied by a bass guitar. The remaining voices can then stack harmonies or move forward for individual leads.
Country remains the foundation, but the repertoire stretches into pop and classic material. Home Free has recorded vocal interpretations of songs associated with artists including Johnny Cash, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, John Mayer, and the Oak Ridge Boys.
One of the group’s signature performances is its version of Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” a song Mohegan Sun specifically highlights ahead of the August concert. (Mohegan Sun Newsroom)
More Than a Vocal Showcase
Home Free doesn’t present its concerts as formal demonstrations of vocal technique.
Humor is a significant part of the show, with the group’s personalities and onstage banter filling the spaces between songs. That combination has helped Home Free reach audiences beyond traditional a cappella fans.
The result sits somewhere between a country concert, vocal showcase, and comedy-laced variety show. The harmonies may be meticulously arranged, but the atmosphere is intentionally loose.
An Outdoor Concert at the Sun Patio
The Sun Patio is located just outside Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Earth, between the Indian Summer and Riverview parking garages.
Mohegan Sun recently updated the outdoor space with a larger stage and new sound system. The grassy venue also includes the adjacent Sun Patio Bar.
Home Free is appearing as part of the Sun Patio Concert Series, which is separate from the free Party on the Sun Patio tribute-band series held on Fridays.
For these Saturday ticketed concerts, the setup is straightforward: general admission and standing room only. Guests cannot bring chairs into the venue.
Food & Drinks
Several food trucks are scheduled for the Home Free concert:
Reel Catch
Hungry Lion
Jayy’s
Fried Dough Nation
Mohegan Sun’s Reel Catch specializes in New England seafood, including fish and chips, hot and cold lobster rolls, lobster grilled cheese, lobster bisque, and clam chowder.
Pizza from The Crafty Slice and freshly popped popcorn will also be available.
The Sun Patio Bar serves cocktails, mocktails, and other beverages, but guests must be 21 or older with valid identification to enter the bar area. The concert itself is open to all ages.
What to Bring — and What to Leave Home
This is a standing-room-only concert, and chairs aren’t permitted, so comfortable shoes are a particularly good idea.
Coolers and outside food and beverages are also prohibited.
Unlike some outdoor concert series where bad weather means waiting for a cancellation notice, the Sun Patio Concert Series is advertised as rain or shine.
Parking
The easiest parking options for the Sun Patio are the Indian Summer Garage and Riverview Parking Garage.
Both put guests close to the outdoor venue, which sits between the two garages just off the Casino of the Earth.
