For a few hours, the Mystic River becomes something you won’t find anywhere else in Connecticut. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, and other paddlecraft slowly fill the water while live music echoes across the harbor from a floating stage, creating a scene that feels equal parts concert, community gathering, and summer adventure.

FloatSwella returns Saturday, July 18, inviting paddlers of all skill levels to launch from several access points along the Mystic River and converge just north of the historic Mystic Bascule Bridge. Hosted by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce in partnership with NORTH SWELL, the free event celebrates everything that makes Mystic’s waterfront such a special place to experience from the water.

This year’s event features a live performance by Red Lion, whose music will drift across the river from a floating stage as hundreds of colorful paddlecraft create a moving audience unlike anything found at a traditional concert. Even if you’re staying on shore, it’s a memorable sight as the river fills with paddlers against the backdrop of downtown Mystic.

One of the best parts of FloatSwella is how many ways there are to enjoy it. Bring your own kayak or paddleboard and become part of the rally, or simply grab a spot along the waterfront, on one of the bridges, or at a local restaurant to watch the spectacle unfold. Every vantage point offers a different perspective on the afternoon.

The event also highlights Mystic’s deep connection to its river by encouraging safe, non-motorized recreation in one of southeastern Connecticut’s most picturesque settings. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or someone who simply enjoys watching unique local events, FloatSwella offers a summer experience that’s difficult to forget.
