Chess Club for Kids at the Mystic & Noank Library
Chess Club for Kids at the Mystic & Noank Library allows young players to build their chess skills in a fun, supportive environment every Thursday afternoon. Open to students in grades 3 and up, the weekly club focuses on strategy, sportsmanship, and friendly competition while helping children strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Led by library associate and chess enthusiast Michael Grater, the club welcomes children who already know the basic movements of the chess pieces. Meetings include instruction in chess strategy, organized games, and opportunities to practice against other players while learning the importance of respect, patience, and good sportsmanship.
Whether children are looking to improve their game or simply enjoy playing with others, the Chess Club provides a welcoming place to develop new skills and make friends through one of the world’s oldest strategy games.

Michael Grater
Library associate and longtime chess enthusiast Michael Grater leads the Chess Club. Having played chess since childhood, he enjoys sharing the game with young players while helping them develop strategy, confidence, and respectful competition.
Club Expectations
Participants are expected to:
- Show respect for fellow players
- Practice good sportsmanship
- Be courteous after every game, whether they win or lose
- Create a positive and welcoming environment for everyone
