The annual f-Stops Here Juried Photography Exhibition runs from 6 to 9 p.m.\, while E Pluribus Venus celebrates its opening from 6 to 8 p.m. \nWith the receptions happening simultaneously\, visitors can move between two very different exhibitions during the same Saturday night. \nThe f-Stops Here\nThe f-Stops Here is Hygienic Art’s recurring juried exhibition devoted entirely to photography. \nThe exhibition has a long history at the New London gallery\, providing both emerging and established photographers with an opportunity to submit work for consideration by a juror rather than participating in an open-entry exhibition. \nThat distinction changes the show. \nA juried exhibition begins with a larger pool of submissions\, with works selected for inclusion based on the juror’s evaluation. Previous editions of f-Stops Here have attracted photographers working across color and black-and-white photography and have included awards recognizing standout work. \nThe result isn’t intended to represent one photographic style or subject. \nInstead\, the gallery becomes a snapshot of what photographers are seeing\, documenting and creating through the camera. \nE Pluribus Venus\nThe second opening takes an entirely different approach. \nE Pluribus Venus brings together five female artists working in dramatically different media: Catherine Gibson\, Serena Bates\, Diane Brown\, Heather Lusk and Kira Seamon. \nEven the title plays with the idea behind the exhibition. \nE pluribus unum\, the familiar Latin phrase meaning “out of many\, one\,” becomes E Pluribus Venus\, shifting the idea toward five women whose individual approaches come together within a single gallery. \nAnd their work doesn’t look remotely alike. \nFive Artists\, Five Ways of Working\nCatherine Gibson works with fused glass\, using heat to transform individual pieces of glass into larger compositions. \nSerena Bates brings sculpture into the exhibition\, including substantial three-dimensional work that changes how visitors physically experience the gallery space. \nDiane Brown works with an unusual combination of wax and oil\, creating mixed-media pieces that occupy another territory altogether. \nHeather Lusk moves in the opposite direction of monumental sculpture with miniature realist oil paintings\, where scale forces viewers to come closer and pay attention to small details. \nKira Seamon completes the group with kaleidoscopic\, dreamlike photography. \nGlass. DESCRIPTION:Naked Canvas 2026: Cosplay turns the human body into a living canvas Saturday\, August 22\, as artists and models compete during a three-hour live bodypainting competition at Hygienic Art Park in downtown New London. \nGates open at 7 p.m.\, with the competition running from 8 to 11 p.m. The evening combines competitive body art with cosplay\, aerial performances\, live entertainment\, music\, vendors and an outdoor bar. \nThis year’s theme is Cosplay\, giving participating artists a starting point drawn from fantasy\, comics\, games\, movies and other corners of pop culture while leaving the final interpretation to their imagination. \nArt Created in Front of the Audience\nUnlike an exhibition where visitors arrive to see finished work hanging on a wall\, Naked Canvas lets the audience watch the artwork take shape. \nArtists work directly on their models during the competition\, gradually transforming the body through paint\, design and costume elements. What begins as bare skin becomes part of a character and a complete piece of temporary art. \nThe live format also makes time part of the challenge. Artists aren’t simply judged on an idea developed privately in a studio. They’re creating while an audience watches and a clock is running. \nAt the end of the competition\, the finished creations become part art exhibition\, part costume and part live performance. \nThe stakes aren’t insignificant\, either.
