SUMMARY:From Vine to Wine: Unexpected Treasures from the Cellar at Ocean House
DESCRIPTION:From Vine to Wine: Unexpected Treasures from the Cellar invites wine lovers to look beyond famous labels and familiar regions during a guided tasting at Ocean House in Watch Hill on Saturday\, August 22. \nBeginning at 3:30 p.m. in the resort’s Center for Wine & Culinary Arts\, the $95 tasting turns the spotlight toward bottles that can be easy to overlook: lesser-known producers\, wines from unexpected regions and selections that Ocean House’s sommelier team believes are drinking particularly well right now. \nIt’s less about chasing prestigious labels and more about one of the pleasures that keeps wine interesting in the first place: finding something you didn’t know you were looking for. \nFinding the Bottles Hiding in Plain Sight\nA large wine cellar inevitably develops its sleepers. \nSome bottles arrive from regions that don’t have the name recognition of Bordeaux\, Burgundy or Napa. Others come from smaller producers\, or simply get overshadowed by more familiar selections on a wine list. \nFor this edition of Ocean House’s From Vine to Wine series\, the sommelier team has gone into the cellar specifically looking for those wines. \nEach selection has been chosen because there’s something worth discovering in the bottle now\, whether that’s its quality\, its value or the way it has developed with time. The tasting is intended to introduce guests to wines they might otherwise pass over when choosing from a restaurant list or browsing a wine shop. \nThe actual bottles aren’t being announced in advance\, which is part of the point. Guests arrive without a list of celebrated labels telling them what they’re supposed to like. \nA Tasting for the Curious\, Not Just Collectors\nDespite the cellar-focused premise\, this isn’t being presented as an event exclusively for experienced wine collectors. \nOcean House describes the tasting as relaxed and lighthearted\, with both collectors and curious wine drinkers welcome. The resort’s broader wine program similarly uses guided tastings to help guests explore different regions\, styles and approaches to winemaking with its sommeliers. \nThat makes Unexpected Treasures particularly approachable for someone who enjoys wine but wants to move beyond ordering the same varietals or regions every time. \nThere’s also something useful about tasting this way. A famous name can create expectations before the cork ever leaves the bottle. An unfamiliar producer or region forces the wine to make its own case. \nInside the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts\nThe tasting takes place in one of the more unusual spaces at Ocean House. \nThe Center for Wine & Culinary Arts serves as the resort’s home for cooking demonstrations\, culinary classes and wine education. Ocean House runs programming there throughout the year\, ranging from introductory tastings to more focused explorations of particular wine regions and styles. \nThe wine program is overseen by Matthew MacCartney\, whose background bridges both sides of the kitchen door. \nMacCartney is a chef by training and has worked at restaurants including Daniel\, Gramercy Tavern and Craft in New York\, Les Prés d’Eugénie in France and Cibrèo in Florence. He later co-owned Jamestown Fish in Rhode Island\, where the wine program received Wine Spectator’s Best Award of Excellence five times. \nToday\, he oversees the wine programs at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn along with the wine experiences presented through the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts. He holds the Wine & Spirit Education Trust’s Level 4 Diploma in Wines and also serves as Wine Director for the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival. \nThat depth helps explain why Ocean House can build an entire tasting around bottles sitting quietly in its own cellar rather than simply assembling a lineup of recognizable names. \nPart of a Full Wine Program at Ocean House\nUnexpected Treasures is one installment in Ocean House’s continuing From Vine to Wine programming. \nOther 2026 tastings have explored questions of wine value and specific regions\, while the following Saturday’s class\, Uncovering Wines of Europe\, turns toward lesser-known European selections including Grüner Veltliner\, Etna Rosso\, Chinon\, Franciacorta and Mencía. \nOcean House also offers shorter Sippin’ with the Somms sessions as part of its regular resort programming. On August 22\, a Seasonal Wines session is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.\, followed by Unexpected Treasures at 3:30 p.m. \nEvent Details\nEvent: From Vine to Wine: Unexpected Treasures from the Cellar\nDate: Saturday\, August 22\, 2026\nTime: 3:30 p.m.\nPrice: $95 per guest\, plus tax and service charge\nLocation: Center for Wine & Culinary Arts at Ocean House\nAddress: 1 Bluff Avenue\, Watch Hill\, RI 02891 \nTickets are non-refundable. \n

SUMMARY:Summer Thursday Music Series: Dave Alves + J&R Seafood Raw Bar at Saltwater Farm Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:Summer Thursday Music Series featuring Dave Alves + J&R Seafood Market raw bar brings live music\, local wine and fresh seafood together at Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington on Thursday\, August 20. Guitarist Dave Alves performs from 5 to 7 p.m.\, while Mystic’s J&R Seafood Market sets up a raw bar for the evening. \nIt’s a particularly local combination. Alves has been part of southeastern Connecticut’s music scene for decades\, J&R was founded by Stonington fishermen\, and Saltwater Farm occupies a piece of Stonington land whose history stretches back more than 350 years. \nThe Thursday series is designed as a casual summer evening rather than a formal concert. Grab a glass or bottle of wine\, order something from the raw bar and find a spot overlooking the vineyard while Alves plays. \nAbout Dave Alves\nDave Alves is a longtime southeastern Connecticut guitarist whose career has moved through rock\, blues\, jazz\, funk and acoustic music. \nHe’s probably most familiar locally as a member of several regional projects and as a musician who regularly performs at vineyards\, restaurants\, festivals and other venues around southeastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. His playing allows him to move comfortably between familiar covers and more improvisational material\, making the smaller vineyard format a natural fit. \nAlves also performs in different configurations depending on the venue\, from solo appearances to the Dave Alves Trio. For the August 20 Saltwater Farm date\, he’s billed simply as Dave Alves\, putting the focus on the more intimate side of his playing. \nJ&R Brings the Raw Bar\nThe other half of Thursday’s pairing comes from nearby Mystic. \nJ&R Seafood Market grew from a business started in 2016 by John and Richie\, two former fishermen who grew up in Stonington and still live in town. Frustrated by what they saw as expensive\, lower-quality seafood\, they began using their fishing-industry relationships to supply fresher products to local chefs and markets. \nIt started with sea scallops. \nThe business expanded\, and the founders’ oldest children\, Allison and Andrew\, eventually opened the retail J&R Seafood Market at 45 Williams Avenue in Mystic. The market now sells fresh seafood along with house-made chowders\, prepared meals\, seafood dips\, sauces and other products. Seafood is delivered fresh daily and sourced from local waters whenever possible. \nRaw bars have become another part of J&R’s business. Its catered raw bars can include oysters\, littlenecks and shrimp cocktail\, along with options such as tuna poke and shrimp-avocado ceviche. The exact selection available at Saltwater Farm hasn’t been announced\, so consider those examples of what J&R offers rather than a guaranteed menu for Thursday. \nA Vineyard With an Unusual Past\nSaltwater Farm Vineyard has one of the more interesting backstories among Connecticut wineries. \nThe land’s agricultural history can be traced to 1653\, when Walter Palmer established a farm on roughly 230 acres surrounding Wequetequock Cove. Portions remained farmland into the early 20th century. \nThen airplanes arrived. \nIn the late 1930s\, William J. Foster established a small community airport on the property called Foster Field\, or Westone Airport. Its hangar was designed by Stonington architect and engineer John W. Lincoln\, who was involved in the development of the Quonset hut. \nAfter World War II\, the property briefly hosted commercial aviation and flight training. The hangar subsequently went through a much less glamorous stretch as a warehouse\, restaurant and manufacturing facility before sitting largely dormant. \nMichael Connery purchased 108 acres in 2001 and began transforming the former airfield into a vineyard while preserving its aviation history. The first vines were planted in 2003\, and the old hangar was eventually restored as the winery’s striking tasting room and event space. \nThe old airfield hasn’t completely disappeared\, either. A grassy landing strip remains part of the property. \nWine\, Seafood and a Thursday Evening\nSaltwater Farm’s Thursday music series continues through September 3 this summer\, with the vineyard remaining open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays and music beginning at 5. \nWine is available by the glass or bottle\, along with a selection of Connecticut craft beer and other beverages. Saltwater Farm is not currently offering traditional wine tastings. \nCheese\, crackers and other small bites are available for purchase\, and guests may bring their own food. On August 20\, of course\, there’s another option: let J&R do the shucking. \nNo outside alcohol is permitted. \nThe performance is rain or shine. Indoor table reservations can be requested in advance\, but the vineyard doesn’t reserve outdoor spaces. Leashed dogs are welcome outdoors\, and children are welcome when accompanied by an adult. \nEvent Details\nDate: Thursday\, August 20\, 2026 \nTime: 5:00–7:00 p.m. \nPerformer: Dave Alves \nSpecial Food Vendor: J&R Seafood Market raw bar \nLocation: Saltwater Farm Vineyard \nAddress: 349 Elm Street\, Stonington\, CT 06378 \nFood: J&R Seafood Market raw bar; cheese\, crackers and other small bites available. SUMMARY:Brad Bensko at Kingdom of the Hawk Vineyard
DESCRIPTION:Brad Bensko at Kingdom of the Hawk Vineyard brings the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist back to North Stonington on Saturday\, August 15\, for an afternoon of live music among the vines. Bensko performs from 3 to 5 p.m.\, with The Grazing Cart serving food during the afternoon. \nBensko is a familiar name around southeastern Connecticut\, but his musical reach stretches well beyond the local acoustic circuit. A Berklee College of Music graduate\, songwriter\, producer and recording engineer\, he pulls heavily from 1950s and ’60s pop\, the American Songbook and American roots music. The result can move from Beatles-era melodic pop into folk\, blues and country without sounding like a standard cover-set playlist. \nThe setting fits that kind of Saturday afternoon. Kingdom of the Hawk Vineyard sits on Pendleton Hill Road amid the rural landscape of North Stonington\, with a contemporary winery\, expansive lawn and vineyard views. Wine is available by the glass or bottle\, along with Connecticut craft beer and cider. \nAbout Brad Bensko\nBensko began playing music young after discovering the Beatles at age seven. He later became part of the New London-area music scene\, earning a 2010 New London Whalie Award for Best Performance for his original song “Why Do You Do That?” \nIn 2011\, he left Connecticut to attend Berklee College of Music\, studying Music Production and Engineering with a minor in Acoustics and Electronics. That technical side of his background became an important part of his own recordings. \nFor his self-titled 2018 album\, Bensko went deliberately old-school. He recorded on one-inch\, eight-track analog tape and played most of the instruments himself\, following the kind of studio approach associated with musicians such as Paul McCartney and Todd Rundgren. \nBensko also performs as one half of Kat & Brad with singer\, songwriter and violinist Kathleen Parks of Twisted Pine. Their performances have taken them around New England and onto bills with artists including John Sebastian\, Happy Traum\, Paul Rishell and Annie Raines. \nFor the Kingdom of the Hawk performance\, expect the smaller\, singer-songwriter side of Bensko rather than a full-band rock show. \nSaturday Afternoon at Kingdom of the Hawk\nKingdom of the Hawk is one of North Stonington’s newer vineyard destinations\, combining a modern barn-inspired building with lawns\, vines and surrounding woods. \nIts Saturday music series has been running throughout the summer with regional performers including Ben Freiert\, Jason Ingriselli and Dan Watson. Brad Bensko takes the August 15 slot at 3 p.m. \nThe tasting room is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays\, so there’s plenty of time to arrive before the music begins. Wine is sold by the glass or bottle rather than through traditional tastings or flights. The vineyard also offers a rotating selection of Connecticut craft beer and cider. \nLeashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas. Outdoor seating isn’t reserved\, while indoor reservations aren’t generally necessary unless you’re coming with a larger group. \nThe Grazing Cart\nThe Grazing Cart will be at the vineyard during Bensko’s August 15 performance. \nThere’s one useful rule to know before packing the car: when a food truck or food vendor is on site\, Kingdom of the Hawk asks guests not to bring outside food or picnics. The policy is intended to support the local vendors appearing at the vineyard. \nSo for this particular Saturday\, leave the picnic basket home. \nA Relaxed Alternative to a Nighttime Concert\nThis isn’t a ticketed theater show or a late-night club gig. It’s an afternoon built around two hours of music with the vineyard remaining open around it. \nArrive early\, find a place outside\, pick up something from The Grazing Cart and get a glass of wine. Bensko starts at three. By five\, the music and the vineyard’s regular Saturday hours wrap up together. \nEvent Details\nDate: Saturday\, August 15\, 2026 \nTime: 3:00–5:00 p.m. \nPerformer: Brad Bensko \nLocation: Kingdom of the Hawk Vineyard \nAddress: 113 Pendleton Hill Road\, North Stonington\, CT 06359 \nAdmission: Free \nMusic: Singer-songwriter\, roots\, folk\, vintage pop and blues influences \nFood: The Grazing Cart \nOutside Food: Guests are asked not to bring outside food or picnics when a food vendor is on site. \nWine: Available by the glass or bottle. Traditional tastings and flights aren’t offered. \nOther Drinks: Connecticut craft beer and cider are also available. \nPets: Leashed pets are welcome outdoors. \nVineyard Hours: 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. \nPhone: (860) 328-5331 \nMore Information\nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \n\n
