SUMMARY:The Crucible Brings the Salem Witch Trials to Westerly's Granite Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Crucible Brings the Salem Witch Trials to Westerly’s Granite Theatre from Oct. 9–25\, as Arthur Miller’s acclaimed drama explores the devastating consequences of fear\, suspicion and false accusations. Directed by Marla Ladd\, the production opens Friday evening and continues for 11 performances at the historic downtown theater.\n\nSet in Salem\, Massachusetts\, during the witch trials of 1692\, The Crucible follows a community unraveling as accusations of witchcraft spread from one household to another. Neighbors turn against neighbors\, personal grievances become matters of life and death\, and the authorities struggle to distinguish truth from deception. \nFirst performed in 1953\, Miller’s play remains one of the most frequently produced works of American theater\, confronting questions about personal integrity\, collective hysteria and the dangers of allowing fear to replace evidence. \nA Community Consumed by Suspicion\nAt the center of the story is John Proctor\, a Salem farmer whose troubled relationship with Abigail Williams becomes entangled in the growing witchcraft accusations. When a group of young women begins naming supposed witches\, the accusations quickly gain the attention of religious and judicial authorities. \nAbigail’s personal motivations\, combined with the community’s rigid beliefs and growing panic\, help transform suspicion into a deadly legal process. As the trials intensify\, ordinary residents face impossible choices between protecting their reputations\, accusing others and defending what they know to be true. \nProctor’s struggle becomes the moral center of the play. Confronted with the possibility of saving his own life through a false confession\, he must decide what his name\, his conscience and his integrity are worth. \nThe drama unfolds through increasingly tense confrontations\, revealing how easily institutions can become instruments of injustice when accusations are accepted without meaningful scrutiny. \nArthur Miller’s Warning About Mass Hysteria\nAlthough The Crucible takes place in colonial Massachusetts\, Miller wrote the play during the early 1950s\, when investigations into alleged communist influence were affecting careers and reputations throughout the United States. \nThe work is widely understood as an allegory for McCarthyism and the political atmosphere surrounding the House Un-American Activities Committee. Miller drew parallels between the Salem witch trials and a contemporary culture in which accusations could destroy lives\, even when supported by little evidence. \nThat historical connection helped establish The Crucible as more than a dramatization of the Salem trials. Its exploration of power\, conformity\, fear and moral courage has continued to resonate with audiences confronting similar questions in different generations. \nThe play received the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play and has remained a fixture of professional\, community and educational theater. \nA Historic Setting for a Powerful American Drama\nGranite Theatre presents the production in its restored Greek Revival church building at 1 Granite Street in downtown Westerly. The intimate venue offers an appropriate setting for a play built around charged dialogue\, personal confrontations and escalating emotional tension. \nDirector Marla Ladd leads the production\, assisted by Caitlyn Ordway\, with Sarah Cropley serving as stage manager. The three-week engagement includes evening performances on Thursdays\, Fridays and Saturdays\, along with Sunday performances. \nThe opening weekend features shows Friday and Saturday\, Oct. 9–10\, at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by a Sunday\, Oct. 11\, performance at 5 p.m. The production continues through Sunday\, Oct. 25. \nFor theatergoers seeking something more substantial than traditional Halloween entertainment\, The Crucible offers a different kind of October drama. Its haunting subject matter comes not from supernatural events\, but from the damage people can inflict when fear overwhelms reason. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. SUMMARY:Knickerbocker All Stars Bring Blues\, Soul and Dancing Back to the Knick
DESCRIPTION:Knickerbocker All Stars Bring Blues\, Soul and Dancing Back to the Knick Friday\, Oct. 9\, as the nine-piece band returns to the Westerly room whose musical history inspired its name for a night built around blues\, jump blues\, soul and a dance floor meant to be used. \nThis isn’t simply a concert with dancing permitted off to the side. \nDance Night at the Knick is built around the floor. \nThe Knickerbocker All Stars take the stage at 8 p.m.\, bringing two vocalists\, keyboards\, guitar\, bass\, drums and a four-piece horn section into a room with decades of history behind exactly this kind of music. \nThe current lineup is Willie J Laws on vocals and guitar\, Alexus Lee on vocals\, Arthur Migliazza on keyboards\, Osi Brathwaite on drums\, Paul Loranger on bass\, Doc Chanonhouse on trumpet\, Emmett Goods on trombone\, Rich Lataille on saxophone and Doug James on baritone saxophone. \nThat’s a lot of horsepower for a dance floor. \nA Band Born From the Knick’s Musical History\nThe name Knickerbocker All Stars isn’t borrowed from the venue simply because the band happens to play there. \nThe group’s identity is tied directly to the musical legacy of the Knickerbocker. \nFor generations\, the Westerly club developed a reputation as one of southern New England’s homes for blues and roots music. The Knickerbocker All Stars were created in that tradition\, drawing heavily from the American music that historically filled rooms like this one: blues\, jazz\, jump blues\, R&B and soul. \nThe result isn’t a nostalgia act recreating a particular year. \nThe band takes the language of classic American roots music and puts it behind a large ensemble capable of moving from blues shuffles to swinging horn arrangements and deep soul grooves. \nThat four-man horn section is particularly important. \nTrumpet\, trombone\, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone give the All Stars the kind of punch associated with the great jump-blues and R&B bands\, while the rhythm section keeps the music pointed toward the dance floor. \nSome Serious Blues Credentials\nThe All Stars have accumulated an impressive collection of collaborators. \nMembers of the group have recorded or performed with artists including Marcia Ball\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Sugaray Rayford\, Thornetta Davis\, Curtis Salgado\, Duke Robillard\, Al Copley\, Dave Maxwell\, Sax Gordon and Johnny Nicholas. \nThere’s also a particularly strong Rhode Island connection. \nThe All Stars have worked with musicians associated with Roomful of Blues\, the Rhode Island-born band that became one of the country’s enduring institutions in jump blues\, swing and R&B. \nThe Knickerbocker All Stars have also reached the upper reaches of the Living Blues Radio Chart\, appeared on the Grammy nomination ballot and received a Blues Music Award nomination for Soul Blues Album of the Year. \nBut those credentials aren’t really the point Friday night. \nThis show isn’t designed for an audience sitting silently in theater seats. \nIt’s Dance Night. \nTwo Voices at the Front\nThe current lineup also gives the band two distinctive lead voices. \nWillie J Laws brings guitar and vocals to the front line\, backed by decades immersed in blues\, funk\, R&B and Texas-rooted musical traditions. \nAlongside him is Alexus Lee\, a Rhode Island singer-songwriter with a powerful soul and R&B voice. \nPutting both singers in front of a nine-piece band allows the All Stars to move through a much broader range of material and energy than a conventional small blues combo. \nBehind them is a lineup assembled for scale: four horns\, keyboards\, bass and drums. \nWhen all nine musicians are working at once\, this is closer to a small soul revue than a bar band. \nThe Knick Is Changing\, but the Dance Floor Remains\nThere’s another layer to Friday’s show in 2026. \nThe historic Knickerbocker entered a new chapter this year under the stewardship of the UNITED Theatre\, with the space becoming the Knick Music Lab. \nThe transition has expanded the building’s role in music education and community programming while preserving live performances in a room that already carries considerable musical history. \nAnd one of the traditions being preserved is dancing. \nFriday’s show is billed as the second Dance Night of the fall\, following the Al Copley Quintet’s swing night in September. \nThat matters because there aren’t many music rooms left where dancing is treated as part of the event rather than something an audience might spontaneously decide to do. \nAt the Knick\, the dance floor is part of the identity. \nEat Before You Come\nThere is one important change longtime Knick visitors should know about. \nThe Knick currently does not have a working kitchen. \nPrepackaged concession snacks and soft drinks will be available\, along with a limited bar offering selections of packaged beer\, wine and canned cocktails. \nAnyone remembering the Knickerbocker as a place to have dinner with a show should plan differently for this one. \nEat beforehand. \nThen show up ready for the reason the room became famous in the first place. \nA band\, a dance floor and American roots music loud enough to fill both. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. SUMMARY:Westerly-Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade Celebrates 75 Years of Italian Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Westerly-Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade Celebrates 75 Years of Italian Heritage on Sunday\, October 11\, with a colorful procession of marching bands\, community organizations\, fire departments and local groups traveling through two states. The parade steps off at 1 p.m. from Westerly High School\, continuing a regional tradition that has brought Rhode Island and Connecticut neighbors together for generations.\n\n\nThis year’s theme\, Cheers to 75 Years\, recognizes a milestone for one of the area’s longest-running community celebrations. Organizers describe the Westerly-Pawcatuck procession as the only known parade in the United States to cross a state line\, traveling from Westerly\, Rhode Island\, into neighboring Pawcatuck\, Connecticut. \nThe event celebrates the Italian-American heritage that helped shape the region\, while welcoming participants and spectators from throughout southern New England. The 2026 procession is expected to feature school marching bands\, the Westerly Band\, civic organizations and visiting groups from other states. \nA Parade That Connects Two States\nThe Westerly-Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade traces its origins to 1950\, when local residents established a celebration of Italian heritage and community pride. Over the decades\, it has grown into a major autumn tradition\, drawing families to the streets of Westerly and Pawcatuck each October. \nOne of its most distinctive features is the route itself. The procession begins at Westerly High School on Ward Avenue\, moves through downtown Westerly and crosses the Pawcatuck River into Connecticut. The crossing reflects the close relationship between two communities that share a river\, a downtown business district and generations of family and cultural connections. \nMusic has always played a central role in the celebration. The Westerly Band has participated since the first procession\, and school marching bands have become an annual highlight. Fire apparatus\, community organizations and other parade entries add to the atmosphere as spectators gather along the route. \nGrey Sail Founders Named Grand Marshals\nThe 2026 grand marshals are Jennifer and Alan Brinton\, founders of Grey Sail Brewing of Rhode Island. The couple established their brewery in Westerly’s former macaroni factory at 63 Canal Street\, a building whose history connects directly to the area’s Italian-American industrial heritage. \nAfter purchasing and renovating the property\, the Brintons opened Grey Sail in 2011. The brewery has since become a familiar part of Westerly’s business and hospitality community\, making the couple fitting representatives for an anniversary celebration centered on local history and civic pride. \nTheir selection also highlights the continuing evolution of downtown Westerly\, where historic industrial buildings have found new purposes while maintaining connections to the community’s past. \nPlanning Your Parade Day\nThe parade begins Sunday\, October 11\, at 1 p.m.\, with Monday\, October 12\, designated as the rain date. Spectators can watch from locations along the route through downtown Westerly and into Pawcatuck\, including the Granite Street and Canal Street areas and Stillman Avenue in Connecticut. \nBecause the parade travels through busy downtown streets\, visitors should arrive early\, allow extra time for parking and anticipate temporary road closures. Families may want to bring folding chairs\, comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for October weather. \nThe event is free to attend\, and organizers continue to welcome donations to support the volunteer-run celebration. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nDetails\nEvent: 75th Annual Westerly-Pawcatuck Columbus Day Parade\nTheme: Cheers to 75 Years\nDate: Sunday\, October 11\, 2026\nTime: 1 p.m. step-off\nRain Date: Monday\, October 12\, 2026\, at 1 p.m.\nStarting Location: Westerly High School\nStarting Address: 23 Ward Avenue\, Westerly\, RI 02891\nParade Area: Downtown Westerly\, RI\, and Pawcatuck\, CT\nAdmission: Free\nGrand Marshals: Jennifer and Alan Brinton\, founders of Grey Sail Brewing\nActivities: Marching bands\, fire apparatus\, civic organizations and community parade entries\nParking: Downtown public parking where available; expect restrictions and road closures along the route\nWhat to Bring: Folding chairs\, comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing\nWeather: Rain date scheduled for Monday\, October 12\nAccessibility: Sidewalk viewing is available along portions of the route; accessible viewing arrangements have not been specified by organizers\nOrganizer: Permanent Columbus Day Parade Committee\nContact: support@columbusparadewp.com \n\n  \n\nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.
