SUMMARY:“Merry Wives” at Wilcox Park by the Colonial Theatre
DESCRIPTION:“Merry Wives” at Wilcox Park by the Colonial Theatre brings Shakespearean mischief back outdoors in downtown Westerly with a family-friendly reading of an abridged adaptation of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Adapted by Colonial Theatre dramaturg Robert “Bob” Durwood Madison\, the approximately hour-long production pares the comedy down to its scheming wives\, jealous husbands\, romantic complications and\, of course\, Sir John Falstaff. \nThe production is part of a theatrical tradition that has been unfolding beneath the trees of Wilcox Park since 1991. The Colonial Theatre’s summer performances have become one of Westerly’s signature cultural events\, transforming the Victorian-era park into an outdoor theater where audiences spread blankets across the grass\, unpack picnic dinners and watch professional theater as daylight gives way to evening. (Colonial Theatre) \nFor anyone intimidated by Shakespeare\, this may be a particularly easy doorway in. Madison’s abridgment is designed for both longtime Shakespeare audiences and newcomers\, condensing the original play into a fast-moving comedy centered on Falstaff\, Mistress Quickly and the Ford and Page families. \nWhat Is The Merry Wives of Windsor About?\nAt the center of Shakespeare’s comedy is one of his most memorable characters: Sir John Falstaff. \nFalstaff decides he can improve his financial situation by courting two wealthy married women\, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. There’s one rather large flaw in the plan. \nHe sends them essentially the same love letter. \nThe women discover what he’s doing and decide that Falstaff deserves a lesson. Instead of simply rejecting him\, they play along\, setting off an escalating series of tricks and humiliations at his expense. \nMeanwhile\, Mr. Ford becomes consumed by jealousy\, young Anne Page has several potential husbands circling her\, and various schemes collide as the story heads toward its conclusion. \nThe result is one of Shakespeare’s broadest comedies\, filled with disguises\, misunderstandings\, romantic plotting and a man whose confidence repeatedly outruns his common sense. \nAn Abridged Version for Wilcox Park\nThis isn’t a full-length staging of Shakespeare’s original play. \nThe Wilcox Park presentation is a reading of an abridged adaptation by Bob Durwood Madison\, the Colonial Theatre’s dramaturg. The Colonial Theatre’s summer performances have become one of Westerly’s signature cultural events\, transforming the Victorian-era park into an outdoor theater where audiences spread blankets across the grass\, unpack picnic dinners and watch professional theater as daylight gives way to evening. (Colonial Theatre) \nFor anyone intimidated by Shakespeare\, this may be a particularly easy doorway in. Madison’s abridgment is designed for both longtime Shakespeare audiences and newcomers\, condensing the original play into a fast-moving comedy centered on Falstaff\, Mistress Quickly and the Ford and Page families. \nWhat Is The Merry Wives of Windsor About?\nAt the center of Shakespeare’s comedy is one of his most memorable characters: Sir John Falstaff. \nFalstaff decides he can improve his financial situation by courting two wealthy married women\, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. There’s one rather large flaw in the plan. \nHe sends them essentially the same love letter. \nThe women discover what he’s doing and decide that Falstaff deserves a lesson. Instead of simply rejecting him\, they play along\, setting off an escalating series of tricks and humiliations at his expense. \nMeanwhile\, Mr. Ford becomes consumed by jealousy\, young Anne Page has several potential husbands circling her\, and various schemes collide as the story heads toward its conclusion. \nThe result is one of Shakespeare’s broadest comedies\, filled with disguises\, misunderstandings\, romantic plotting and a man whose confidence repeatedly outruns his common sense. \nAn Abridged Version for Wilcox Park\nThis isn’t a full-length staging of Shakespeare’s original play. \nThe Wilcox Park presentation is a reading of an abridged adaptation by Bob Durwood Madison\, the Colonial Theatre’s dramaturg. The shorter format retains the central characters and comic machinery while making the story more approachable for a modern outdoor audience. \nThat’s especially useful for families introducing children or teenagers to Shakespeare. Rather than committing to a production that can run several hours\, audiences get the characters\, language and comedy in roughly an hour. \nThe Colonial describes the adaptation as family-friendly and intended to work equally well for experienced Shakespeare fans and people encountering the play for the first time. \nShakespeare in Wilcox Park Since 1991\nThe Colonial Theatre staged its first Shakespeare in the Park festival in 1991. \nIt stuck. \nMore than three decades later\, the Colonial calls it Rhode Island’s longest-running Shakespeare festival\, and tens of thousands of people have attended performances in Wilcox Park over the years. The organization remains committed to presenting professional outdoor theater that is free or affordable and accessible to the surrounding community. \nThe theater itself doesn’t exist as a permanent building in the park. Each summer\, the Colonial constructs a custom outdoor stage at the northern end of Wilcox Park\, with the park’s natural grassy basin forming the audience area. \nIt’s theater without much ceremony. People arrive with folding chairs and blankets. Some come early\, pick up dinner downtown and picnic before the performance. \nThat informality is part of what has kept the tradition going. \nWatching a Show in Wilcox Park\nThere’s no traditional theater seating. \nThe Colonial says the grassy performance area can accommodate more than 10\,000 people\, and audience members frequently claim a spot well before performances begin. Blankets are welcome\, and chairs are permitted in designated sections. \nFor an outdoor performance\, a few simple things make the evening easier: bring a blanket or folding chair and bug spray. A picnic is also perfectly at home here. \nWilcox Park’s downtown location makes that last part easy. Restaurants and shops along Broad\, High and Canal streets are within walking distance of the performance area. \nGood for First-Time Shakespeare Audiences\nParents wondering whether their children will sit through Shakespeare should find this production considerably less daunting than a traditional staging. \nIt’s short. It’s a comedy. The story is driven by practical jokes and ridiculous behavior rather than complicated historical politics. \nThere will still be Shakespearean language\, but the abridged format makes the plot easier to follow. Knowing the basic setup beforehand helps even more: Falstaff thinks he’s fooling two married women. DESCRIPTION:UNITED Music School Summer Jazz Performance at Wilcox Park gives student musicians the stage for a free outdoor concert in downtown Westerly on Sunday\, August 16. Beginning at 1 p.m.\, the performance brings the Music School’s summer jazz program into Wilcox Park\, turning an afternoon of study and rehearsal into a live performance for the community. \nThe concert is part of a larger music education program at the UNITED that emphasizes actually getting students in front of audiences. The school’s programs use both the UNITED Theatre and nearby Knick Music Lab for instruction\, rehearsals and performance opportunities\, with students learning how to work together as an ensemble rather than limiting their education to individual lessons. (United Theatre) \nAnd for this concert\, admission is free. Bring a blanket or lawn chair\, find a spot in Wilcox Park and hear what the students have been working on over the summer. If weather doesn’t cooperate\, the performance moves indoors to the Knickerbocker Music Lab. \nFrom the Music School to the Stage\nThe UNITED Music School is based inside the restored UNITED Theatre complex on Canal Street\, just a short walk from Wilcox Park. \nThe school offers music education and performance opportunities for people across different ages\, income levels and abilities. The larger goal isn’t simply teaching someone how to play an instrument. UNITED describes its education program as a way to develop creative thinkers\, leaders and lifelong learners through music and the arts. \nPerformance is a significant part of that approach. \nThe Music School’s student ensembles give young musicians experience rehearsing as a group and then taking that work onto an actual stage. Its auditioned A Band Called PoP\, for example\, includes students from high schools across southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut and combines music education with leadership\, planning and collaborative decision-making. \nThe school also operates Youth On-the-Mic at the Knick Music Lab\, giving students in grades 6 through 12 a supportive place to perform for an audience. The program is now in its seventh year. \nThe Summer Jazz Performance follows the same basic idea: music is learned in rehearsal\, but eventually it’s meant to be played for somebody. \nAn Afternoon of Student Jazz\nJazz is particularly well suited to ensemble education. \nStudents have to listen to one another\, keep time\, understand their place within an arrangement and react to what the musicians around them are doing. Improvisation adds another challenge\, asking a player to make musical decisions in real time rather than simply reproduce notes from a page. \nThe August 16 performance gives the Summer Jazz students an opportunity to put those skills together in front of a live audience. \nA specific setlist and student lineup have not been announced\, so audiences should expect a showcase of the summer program rather than a conventional touring concert with a predetermined program. \nA Music School with Westerly Roots\nThe UNITED’s music education program has an interesting connection to Westerly’s long musical history. \nThe UNITED campus includes the Knick Music Lab\, housed at the historic Knickerbocker Music Center at 35 Railroad Avenue. The Knickerbocker has been associated with live music in Westerly for generations\, particularly blues and jazz. The Knickerbocker All Stars\, for example\, take their name and inspiration from the venue’s history of hosting prominent jazz and blues musicians. \nToday\, UNITED uses the Knick as a creative hub for students and working artists\, hosting rehearsals\, recording\, masterclasses\, residencies\, teen programs and live performances. \nThat makes it a fitting rain location for a student jazz concert. \nAbout the UNITED\nThe UNITED itself is celebrating a major anniversary in 2026. \nThe theater first opened in Westerly as a vaudeville house in 1926 before eventually becoming a movie theater. It closed in 1986 and remained dark until a community effort began transforming the building and the neighboring former Montgomery Ward property into a modern arts complex. \nFollowing a major two-year renovation\, the UNITED reopened in July 2021. \nToday the complex includes a 750-capacity performance space\, three cinemas\, gallery and event space and the UNITED Music School. Its programming extends from concerts and independent film to theater\, dance and arts education. \nThe Music School’s summer performance takes that work out of the building and into the center of Westerly. \nAn Outdoor Concert in Wilcox Park\nWilcox Park sits in the heart of downtown Westerly\, adjacent to the Westerly Library and within walking distance of the UNITED. \nThe 1 p.m. start makes this an easy addition to a Sunday afternoon downtown.
