Whether competing for a personal best\, walking with family members\, or participating in memory of someone who served\, entrants share a common purpose: supporting the Coast Guard community. \nA Waterfront Course Along the Thames River\nThe 3.1-mile course begins at Fort Trumbull State Park and follows an out-and-back route along Pequot Avenue\, offering views of the Thames River and New London’s waterfront. \nDescribed by organizers as flat and fast\, the course is suitable for experienced runners looking for a competitive time as well as recreational joggers and walkers who prefer a more relaxed pace. \nChip timing will be provided by SNERRO\, LLC\, allowing registered 5K participants to receive an official race time. \nStrollers are welcome\, making the event accessible to families who want to complete the course together. \nThe setting is particularly appropriate for an event honoring Coast Guard service. Across the Thames River in New London\, the United States Coast Guard Academy has trained generations of officers\, while the surrounding waterfront remains closely connected to the service’s maritime mission. \nRemembering Those Who Served\nThe Run to Remember is more than a traditional community road race. \nIts central purpose is to honor Coast Guard members who made the ultimate sacrifice while recognizing the families and colleagues who continue to carry their memories. \nThe Coast Guard’s responsibilities range from search and rescue and maritime law enforcement to environmental protection\, port security\, and national defense. Its members frequently operate in difficult and dangerous conditions\, sometimes risking their own lives to save others. \nFor Coast Guard families\, the loss of a loved one can bring emotional and financial challenges that continue long after the initial tragedy. \nThe event offers an opportunity for active-duty personnel\, veterans\, relatives\, friends\, and members of the public to come together in remembrance while contributing to programs that help Coast Guard families facing hardship. \nSupporting the Coast Guard Foundation\nProceeds benefit the Coast Guard Foundation\, a nonprofit organization that provides support to Coast Guard members and their families. \nThe Foundation’s work includes emergency assistance\, tragedy support\, scholarships\, education programs\, and other resources intended to strengthen the Coast Guard community. \nIts tragedy assistance programs help families following the loss of a Coast Guard member\, while emergency relief efforts provide assistance during unexpected hardships. \nBy participating in the Run to Remember\, runners and walkers help support these services while demonstrating community appreciation for the Coast Guard’s mission. \nThe Foundation also offers opportunities for individuals and businesses to sponsor the race or volunteer. Those interested in helping can contact the event organizers. \nA Morning for the Whole Family\nThe event begins at 7:30 a.m. when race-day check-in opens at Fort Trumbull State Park. \nAt 8:45 a.m.\, children can participate in the free half-mile Kids Fun Run. Although there is no entry fee\, registration is required. \nThe main 5K begins at 9 a.m. \nAfter the race\, participants can gather for refreshments and an awards presentation recognizing the top three male and female finishers overall\, along with age-group winners. \nAge divisions include 14 and younger\, 15–19\, 20–29\, 30–39\, 40–49\, 50–59\, 60–69\, and 70 and older. \nThe event is designed to be welcoming rather than exclusively competitive. Walkers\, joggers\, and participants who simply want to show their support are encouraged to register. \nFort Trumbull: A Historic Setting for Remembrance\nFort Trumbull State Park occupies a prominent waterfront site overlooking the Thames River and Long Island Sound. \nThe present fort\, completed in the 19th century\, reflects New London’s long military and maritime history. Its distinctive granite walls and strategic location have made it one of the city’s most recognizable historic landmarks. \nToday\, the state park combines preserved military architecture with waterfront walkways\, open space\, and views of the river. \nThe location connects the event’s remembrance theme with New London’s longstanding role as a center of American maritime activity. \nRegistration and Race-Day Information\nRegistration for the 5K costs $40 through October 15\, increasing to $50 on October 16 and race day. Processing fees are additional. \nA $10 discount is available for military members and veterans. \nThe Kids Fun Run is free\, but children must be registered. \nThe first 100 registered 5K participants are eligible to receive a commemorative inaugural Run to Remember New London coin. \nLimited-edition Coast Guard Foundation Run to Remember T-shirts are available for $30\, with proceeds supporting the Foundation’s assistance programs. \nParticipants should arrive early enough to check in before their scheduled start time and wear comfortable running or walking shoes appropriate for the weather. \nTo register for the race\, click the Event Ticketing link below. \n\nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Walk to End Alzheimer’s Brings Community Together at Ocean Beach Park in New London on Sunday\, October 11\, as families\, friends and supporters gather to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care\, support and research. Originally scheduled for September 26\, the Eastern Connecticut event was postponed because of severe weather and will now take place along New London’s waterfront. \nOrganized by the Alzheimer’s Association\, the annual walk brings together people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia\, including caregivers\, families honoring loved ones and community members supporting efforts to find better treatments and ultimately a cure. \nThe event opens at 9 a.m.\, followed by an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Participants will begin the approximately two-mile walk at 10:30 a.m. \nWalking for Families\, Caregivers and a Cure\nThe Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the Alzheimer’s Association’s largest annual fundraising initiative\, bringing communities together across the country. Donations support research into Alzheimer’s disease\, as well as programs that provide education\, resources and assistance to people living with dementia and those caring for them. \nA meaningful part of the event is the Promise Garden\, where participants carry colorful flowers representing their personal connections to the disease. The flowers recognize people living with Alzheimer’s\, caregivers\, those who have lost loved ones and supporters working toward a future without the disease. \nThe Eastern Connecticut walk provides an opportunity for people to share their experiences\, remember family members and connect with others facing similar challenges. Participants can register individually\, join an existing team or organize a group of family members\, friends or coworkers. \nA Waterfront Walk With a Purpose\nOcean Beach Park provides a scenic setting for the community gathering\, with views of Long Island Sound and space for participants to come together before the walk. \nThe event is designed as a community fundraiser rather than a competitive race\, welcoming people of different ages and walking abilities. Those unable to attend can still support the effort through donations or by contributing to a registered fundraising team. \nWith the event now scheduled for October 11\, organizers encourage participants to check the official event website for updated information before heading to Ocean Beach Park. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. SUMMARY:Run for The Cove Turns Bluff Point Into a Memory Lane for Grieving Families
DESCRIPTION:Run for The Cove Turns Bluff Point Into a Memory Lane for Grieving Families Sunday\, Oct. 4\, bringing families to one of Groton’s most familiar outdoor spaces for a two-mile Memorial Walk\, children’s fun run\, and a morning built around remembering people who have died. \nThis isn’t really a competitive running event despite the “Run for The Cove” name. \nThere is no 5K at the Groton event. The centerpiece is a two-mile Memorial Walk through Bluff Point State Park\, accompanied by a short Kids Fun Run\, children’s arts and crafts\, snacks\, and opportunities for families to remember loved ones together. \nThe event begins at 9 a.m. and raises money for The Cove Center for Grieving Children’s free programs for children and families throughout Connecticut. \nMemory Lane Makes the Walk Personal\nThe most meaningful section of the route may be Memory Lane. \nFamilies participating in The Cove’s fundraising program could raise $30 to have a memorial sign created with a photograph of someone they lost. Those signs are displayed along the walk\, turning part of the route into a collective remembrance. \nThe deadline for requesting a personalized sign for the Groton event was Sept. 24\, so new signs can no longer be ordered for Sunday’s walk. \nBut Memory Lane remains part of the experience for everyone participating. \nThat changes the character of a two-mile walk through the park. Rather than simply counting miles\, participants pass the names and faces of people being remembered by the families around them. \nThe Kids Run Ends With a Medal\nChildren have an event of their own. \nThe Kids Fun Run is intentionally described as quick and easy rather than competitive\, and every participating child receives a medal. \nThere will also be arts and crafts for children\, along with snacks and time for families to gather before and after the walk. \nThat family-centered approach reflects what The Cove does throughout the year. \nThe organization works specifically with children and teenagers coping with the death of someone significant in their lives. Rather than treating grief as something children should simply move beyond\, its programs give them places to talk\, remember and spend time with other young people who understand the experience. \nThe Cove Isn’t a Therapy Group\nThere’s an important distinction in the organization’s approach. \nThe Cove describes its core program as peer-based mutual support rather than therapy. \nVolunteer facilitators are screened and receive 15 hours of training in childhood grief before beginning their work. They also meet with staff before and after program sessions for continuing education and supervision. \nChildren and teenagers are able to interact with peers who have also experienced a death while participating in age-appropriate activities designed around grief and remembrance. \nWhen a child appears to need clinical grief therapy\, The Cove says staff can work with caregivers to identify qualified therapists. \nThat allows its programs to occupy a different space: not replacing professional mental-health treatment\, but creating a community where grieving children don’t have to be the only child in the room who has lost someone. \nWhat Sunday’s Walk Supports\nMoney raised through the Groton event helps keep The Cove’s programs free for participating families. \nThose programs currently include the Family Program\, Camp Compassion\, Virtual Program and Summer Program\, along with professional development work. \nCamp Compassion offers one example of what those donations make possible. \nThe free weekend-long overnight bereavement camp serves Connecticut children and teenagers ages 6 through 17 who have experienced the death of someone significant. Campers participate in familiar camp activities while also taking part in therapeutic grief activities led by bereavement professionals and trained volunteers. \nThe idea is to give children room both to grieve and to simply be children. \nThey can remember the person they lost\, learn coping skills and meet other kids carrying something similar. \nSunday’s walk translates that same philosophy into a public community event. \nThree Connecticut Communities Are Walking for The Cove\nGroton is one of three communities hosting Cove walks this fall. \nThe first took place Sept. 13 at Winding Trails in Farmington. \nGroton follows Oct. 4 at Bluff Point. \nThe organization’s largest October event comes Oct. 18 at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison\, where the program expands to include a timed 5K along with the two-mile Memorial Walk and Kids Fun Run. \nThat distinction is worth emphasizing for anyone looking at the Groton event: Sunday at Bluff Point is the Memorial Walk and Kids Fun Run\, not the 5K. \nA Different Kind of Setting for a Grief Event\nBluff Point gives the Groton walk a particularly appropriate setting. \nInstead of gathering inside a ballroom or event hall\, families spend the morning outdoors\, walking together through the state park. \nAnd this isn’t an event that requires participants to arrive with a particular story. \nSome may be walking shortly after a loss. Others may be remembering someone who died years ago. Children can run\, make crafts and collect their medals while adults walk alongside people who understand why they’re there. \nThere doesn’t have to be a finish line for grief. \nOn Sunday morning\, there is simply a path through Bluff Point and a community willing to walk it together. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. To register\, click the Event Registration link below. \nDetails\nEvent: 2026 Groton Memorial Walk & Kids Fun Run\nDate: Sunday\, Oct. 4\, 2026\nTime: 9 a.m.\nLocation: Bluff Point State Park\nAddress: 55 Depot Road\, Groton\, CT 06340\nOrganizer: The Cove Center for Grieving Children\nMemorial Walk: Two miles\nKids Fun Run: Short\, noncompetitive children’s run; participants receive a medal\nFamily Activities: Children’s arts and crafts and snacks\nMemory Lane: Memorial signs honoring loved ones will be displayed along the walk; the Sept. 24 deadline for new Groton signs has passed\nT-Shirts: Included with registration while supplies last; guaranteed-size deadline has passed\nFundraising: Participants can create or join fundraising teams to support The Cove’s programs\nWeather: Rain or shine\nRefunds: No refunds\nRegistration: Advance registration is encouraged; day-of registration is available at an increased price\nBeneficiary: The Cove Center for Grieving Children\nPrograms Supported: Family Program\, Camp Compassion\, Virtual Program\, Summer Program and professional development\nThe Cove Contact: 203-634-0500\nEvent Contact: Pat Vlamis\, pat@covect.org \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.

SUMMARY:Safe Walk Turns a Morning at Waterford’s Duck Pond Into a Stand Against Abuse
DESCRIPTION:Safe Walk Turns a Morning at Waterford’s Duck Pond Into a Stand Against Abuse. Oct. 4\, Safe Futures brings families\, friends\, and community teams together for its annual walk during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. \nThe walk itself begins at 9 a.m.\, but this is more than a group making a lap around the park. \nBeginning at 8 a.m.\, Arnold Holm Jr. Memorial Park and the surrounding Waterford Duck Pond area become a small community gathering with a craft fair featuring local vendors\, basket raffles\, breakfast food trucks\, and activities surrounding the walk. \nThe goal is both symbolic and practical. \nSafe Futures hopes the event will raise at least $50\,000 to support free and confidential services for people in Southeastern Connecticut affected by domestic violence\, sexual assault\, stalking\, trafficking\, elder abuse\, and child abuse. \nThe Organization Behind the Walk\nSafe Futures is based in New London\, but its work extends throughout Southeastern Connecticut. \nFor someone experiencing abuse\, the organization can be a point of contact at virtually every stage of a crisis. \nSafe Futures operates a confidential hotline 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year. Its services include emergency shelter and safe-hotel placements\, transitional and supportive housing\, individual counseling\, court advocacy\, child and family advocacy\, assistance for victims working with law enforcement and prevention programs in area schools. \nThose services are provided free and confidentially. \nThat gives the Safe Walk a different significance than a typical Sunday-morning fundraiser. \nThe money raised doesn’t disappear into an abstract national campaign. It supports an organization working with people in this region who may need somewhere safe to sleep\, someone to accompany them through court\, help making a safety plan or simply a confidential person to call. \nWalk Together — or Build a Team\nAdults can register for $25\, while children under 18 and students participate free. \nWalkers can come individually\, gather family and friends or create fundraising teams. Participants receive fundraising tools through the event registration system\, and anyone who raises at least $100 receives a Safe Futures T-shirt. \nSame-day registration is available beginning at 8 a.m. \nThe morning’s craft fair also opens at 8\, giving people time to visit local vendors\, grab breakfast from the food trucks and enter the basket raffles before the walk gets underway. \nThen look for the purple balloon arch. \nThat’s the starting line\, positioned at the Waterford Public Library near the Duck Pond. Waterford Police will be on hand to assist pedestrians crossing the surrounding roads. \nWhy October Matters\nSafe Walk is deliberately held at the beginning of October. \nNational Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed throughout the month\, with organizations across Connecticut holding walks\, vigils and community events intended both to support survivors and to make information about domestic violence and available services more visible. \nSafe Futures expands its mission beyond domestic violence alone. Its programs serve people affected by sexual assault\, stalking\, trafficking\, elder abuse and child abuse as well. \nAnd while Sunday’s event is designed to be welcoming and family-friendly\, the reason everyone is gathering at the Duck Pond is serious. \nSometimes awareness means knowing that help exists before you or someone you know needs it. \nSafe Futures’ confidential hotline is available around the clock at 860-701-6001. Connecticut’s statewide Safe Connect service can also be reached by calling or texting 888-774-2900. \nA Walk With a $50\,000 Destination\nSafe Futures has set a fundraising target of at least $50\,000 for this year’s walk. \nBut participation doesn’t require raising hundreds of dollars or assembling a large team. Someone can register\, show up and walk. Families can bring children. Students can participate free. Others can support friends who are fundraising\, shop the craft fair or donate without walking. \nParking will be available nearby at the Waterford Community Center\, Town Hall\, Waterford High School and Civic Triangle Park. The Waterford Public Library lot is reserved for craft-fair vendors and volunteers and will not be available for general parking \nOne other thing to leave home: the dog. Only service dogs and police dogs are permitted at Safe Walk. \nThe craft fair and registration open at 8 a.m.\, and the walk steps off at 9. \nFor Safe Futures\, however\, the destination is considerably farther away: a community where fewer people need the services the organization provides every day. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. SUMMARY:Groton City Brew Run & Food Trucks
DESCRIPTION:Groton City Brew Run returns to Eastern Point Beach on Saturday\, September 12\, combining a waterfront 5K run and walk with a post-race beer garden\, live music\, food trucks\, and craft beverages from breweries and producers across Southern New England. \nNow in its sixth year\, the event begins with a free kids run at 10:30 a.m.\, followed by the 5K run and walk at 11 a.m. The Brew Garden opens at 11:30 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m.\, with Acoustic Marshpit returning to provide live music. \nThe 2026 Brew Run benefits The Riverfront Children’s Center and is hosted by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce\, Groton Utilities and Kelley’s Pace. \nFrom a Local 5K to a Groton Tradition\nThe Groton City Brew Run began in 2021 with a fairly simple combination: go for a run and have a beer afterward. \nSix years later\, the event has grown into one of the City of Groton’s signature late-summer gatherings. \nNearly 600 people participated in 2025\, according to the City of Groton\, marking the first time the event surpassed 500 runners and walkers. \nThe location is a significant part of its appeal. \nThe race starts and finishes at Eastern Point Beach\, where the Thames River meets Long Island Sound. With Shore Avenue reopened following two years of construction\, organizers say the 2026 course returns to a scenic finish with water views. \nRunners and walkers share a single mass start at 11 a.m. \nYou Don’t Have to Run to Join the Brewfest\nDespite the name\, the Groton City Brew Run isn’t limited to runners. \nParticipants can register for the 5K run or walk\, combine the race with admission to the Brew Garden\, or skip the race entirely and purchase Brew Garden admission. \nThe post-race festivities begin at 11:30 a.m.\, when Eastern Point Beach shifts from race course to beer festival. \nThe current 2026 lineup includes 18 breweries\, distilleries and beverage producers\, bringing together a particularly strong collection of Connecticut and Rhode Island names. \nBeer’d Brewing Company\, which operates The Silo in Groton and The Mill in Stonington\, is among the participating breweries. Groton’s Outer Light Brewing Company is also represented. \nThe larger lineup includes Athletic Brewing Company\, B-Sharp Brewing\, Barn Brew Co.\, Back East Brewing\, BAD SONS Brewing\, Creature Brewing Company\, Grey Sail Brewing\, Levine Distributing\, Litchfield Distillery\, Owl’s Brew\, Schooner’s Beverages\, Tapped Apple\, These Guys Brewing\, Two Roads Brewing\, Waypoint Spirits and Whalers Brewing Company. \nThat mix means the Brew Garden extends beyond conventional craft beer\, with spirits and other beverages represented alongside the breweries. \nBrew Garden admission is restricted to guests 21 and older. \nAcoustic Marshpit Returns to the Beach\nThe music portion of the afternoon belongs to Acoustic Marshpit\, returning after previously performing at the Brew Run two years ago. \nThe acoustic act provides the soundtrack once the race gives way to the post-run celebration\, with music continuing alongside the Brew Garden and food trucks. \nThe City of Groton specifically cited the group’s previous Brew Run appearance in announcing its return for 2026\, describing a performance that kept the post-race party moving. \nRather than treating the music as a separate concert\, the Brew Run builds it into the larger beach gathering. Runners can finish their 5K\, grab something to eat and spend the remainder of the afternoon at Eastern Point Beach without needing to head elsewhere. \nA Free Race for Younger Runners\nBefore the main field takes off\, younger runners get a race of their own. \nThe Kids Run begins at 10:30 a.m. and is free for children age 10 and younger. \nPre-registration is required even though there is no entry fee. \nThe Kids Run\, food and live music also give families something to do beyond the adult Brew Garden\, making the larger event more than a beer festival attached to a road race. \nSupporting The Riverfront Children’s Center\nThis year’s Brew Run benefits The Riverfront Children’s Center\, adding a community fundraising component to the event. \nThe Groton nonprofit has served children and families in southeastern Connecticut for decades\, providing early childhood education and care with an emphasis on making quality programs available to families across different income levels. \nThat mission fits an event designed to bring together runners\, walkers\, families\, local businesses and breweries from throughout the region. \nRace Registration and Brew Garden Tickets\nSeveral registration options are available depending on how much of the day visitors want to participate in. \nAs of the current registration period\, the 5K run or walk is $37\, while the combined 5K and Brew Garden package is $49. Brew Garden admission without participating in the race is $39. \nThe Kids Run remains free. \nRace-day packet pickup runs from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. \nParticipants can also avoid the race-morning pickup line by collecting their bib and shirt in advance at the City of Groton Municipal Building\, 295 Meridian Street. Early packet pickup is scheduled for Thursday\, September 10\, and Friday\, September 11\, from 3 to 7 p.m. \nTech shirts are available to registered 5K runners and walkers while supplies last. \nAn End-of-Summer Party at Eastern Point\nThe combination is an unusual one\, but after six years it has become the identity of the event. \nThe morning starts with running shoes and a starting line. A half-hour after the 5K begins\, taps start pouring\, food trucks are serving and live music takes over the beach. \nPeople who have no interest in running can simply come for the Brew Garden. Families can bring younger children for their own race. Serious runners can treat it as a competitive 5K. \nIn 2025\, William Sanders won the overall race in 15:58\, while Shelly Rivera was the women’s winner in 20:31. \nFor everyone else\, there’s beer waiting at the finish. \nEvent Details\nEvent: 6th Annual Groton City Brew Run\nDate: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\nLocation: Eastern Point Beach\nAddress: 1 Beach Pond Road\, Groton\, CT 06340\nKids Run: 10:30 a.m.\n5K Run & Walk: 11 a.m.\nBrew Garden\, Music & Food Trucks: 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m.\nLive Music: Acoustic Marshpit\n5K Run/Walk: $37\n5K + Brew Garden: $49\nBrew Garden Only: $39\nKids Run: Free; pre-registration required\nBrew Garden Age: 21+\nBeneficiary: The Riverfront Children’s Center\nHosts: Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce\, Groton Utilities and Kelley’s Pace\nRace-Day Packet Pickup: 8:30–10:45 a.m. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nTo register\, click the Event Ticketing link below. \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown. \n

SUMMARY:Southeastern Connecticut Out Of The Darkness Walk
DESCRIPTION:Southeastern Connecticut Out Of The Darkness Walk brings hundreds of people together at McCook Point Park in Niantic on Saturday\, September 12\, for a morning centered on remembrance\, support\, and a shared determination to prevent suicide. \nOrganized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Connecticut Chapter\, the annual community walk welcomes people who have lost someone to suicide\, those with their own lived experience\, friends and family members\, mental health professionals\, and anyone who wants to support suicide prevention. \nCheck-in begins at 10 a.m.\, followed by the event at 11 a.m. Participation is free\, although advance registration is encouraged. The walk itself is noncompetitive and will cover between one and three miles\, with organizers posting the final Niantic route as Walk Day approaches. \nMore Than a Fundraising Walk\nOut of the Darkness Walks take place in hundreds of communities around the country each year\, but AFSP deliberately designed them to be more than charity walks. \nFor many participants\, the reason for showing up is deeply personal. \nSome walk in memory of a child\, parent\, sibling\, spouse\, friend or coworker lost to suicide. Others have survived a suicide attempt or experienced suicidal thoughts themselves. Some come to support someone they love\, while others simply believe mental health and suicide prevention deserve more attention. \nThe result is an event where people who might never otherwise meet discover that they share an experience. \nThat idea is built into the name. Out of the Darkness is about bringing suicide into the open\, replacing silence and stigma with conversation and making it easier for people to seek help before reaching a crisis. \nThe Niantic event includes an opening ceremony\, activities focused on hope and healing\, resource tables and AFSP’s Honor Bead program. \nThe Meaning Behind the Honor Beads\nOne of the most recognizable parts of an Out of the Darkness Walk is also one of its quietest. \nParticipants receive complimentary Honor Beads\, with different colors representing the reason a person is walking. \nWhite represents the loss of a child. Red represents the loss of a spouse or partner. Gold represents the loss of a parent. Orange represents the loss of a sibling\, while purple represents the loss of another relative or friend. \nOther colors speak to different experiences. Teal represents someone who has struggled personally or attempted suicide. Green represents a personal struggle or attempt\, while blue shows general support for suicide prevention. Silver represents the loss of a first responder or member of the military. \nParticipants may wear more than one strand. \nThe beads create a kind of visual language throughout the walk. Someone who has difficulty approaching a stranger and explaining why they’re there may notice another person wearing the same color and immediately understand that they share something significant. \nFor an event dealing with experiences that can be difficult to put into words\, that recognition can matter. \nWhy AFSP Walks\nThe American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was established in 1987 by a group that included researchers and families who had lost loved ones to suicide. \nIts work now stretches across scientific research\, public education\, advocacy\, community programs and support for people affected by suicide loss. \nThe Out of the Darkness program has become one of the organization’s most visible efforts. AFSP reported nearly 600 Community and Campus Walks and more than 220\,000 participants in its 2025 annual reporting. \nThe money raised through the walks helps fund research into suicide and its prevention\, educational programs in schools and workplaces\, advocacy for public policies related to mental health and suicide prevention\, and programs supporting people who have experienced suicide loss. \nFunds raised through the Southeastern Connecticut Walk specifically help support AFSP programs and work across Connecticut. \nWalking During Suicide Prevention Week\nThis year’s Niantic walk falls at a particularly meaningful point on the calendar. \nSeptember is National Suicide Prevention Month\, and September 6–12 is National Suicide Prevention Week in 2026. World Suicide Prevention Day takes place Thursday\, September 10\, just two days before the Southeastern Connecticut walk. \nAFSP is using the month to encourage people to talk more openly about suicide prevention\, learn how to recognize when someone may need help and become involved in their own communities. \nThe September 12 gathering at McCook Point Park puts that national effort into a distinctly local setting. \nPeople aren’t simply sharing a social media post or wearing a ribbon. They’re physically showing up beside neighbors who may be carrying grief\, supporting someone who’s struggling or dealing with experiences of their own. \nFundraising Is Encouraged\, But It Isn’t Required\nThere is no registration fee or fundraising minimum to participate in the Southeastern Connecticut Out of the Darkness Walk. \nPeople can register individually\, join an existing team or create a team of their own. Each registered participant receives a personal fundraising page that can be customized with a photograph and the story behind why they’re walking. \nAFSP also offers incentives for participants who choose to fundraise. \nAnyone who individually raises at least $150 by September 12 earns the official 2026 Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt at the event. Participants who raise more than $250 qualify for an additional recognition gift sent after Walk Day. \nBut raising money isn’t a condition of joining the community. \nSomeone who simply needs to be there can walk. \nDonations to the Southeastern Connecticut event remain open through December 31\, 2026. \nMcCook Point Provides a Waterfront Setting\nThe walk takes place at McCook Point Park\, overlooking Long Island Sound in Niantic. \nThe East Lyme town park encompasses McCook Point and the adjoining McCook Beach\, with lawns\, walking areas and views across Niantic Bay and Long Island Sound. Its combination of open green space and waterfront makes it particularly well suited to an event that includes gathering\, remembrance and a community walk. \nParticipants should plan to arrive before the 11 a.m. start if they need to check in. Registration opens at 10 a.m.\, providing time for walkers to gather\, visit resource tables and take part in activities before the formal program begins. \nThe exact 2026 walking route has not yet been announced. AFSP says Community Walk routes generally range from one to three miles and are noncompetitive. \nThere is no pressure to finish first. That’s not what this walk is about. \nA Place for People Who “Get It”\nPerhaps the most important part of an Out of the Darkness Walk happens outside the mileage and fundraising totals. \nAFSP describes the walks as places where people can find others who “get it.” \nSuicide loss can leave families and friends carrying questions and grief that are difficult to explain to people who haven’t experienced it. People who have survived their own suicidal crisis may face a different kind of isolation\, including fear about how others will react if they talk about what happened. \nAt McCook Point Park\, those experiences don’t have to be hidden. \nSome participants will arrive carrying photographs or wearing shirts honoring someone they’ve lost. Others will wear Honor Beads that quietly tell their story. Teams may walk together under the name of a person they’re remembering. \nAnd some people may simply walk. \nAll of them belong there. \nDetails\nEvent: Southeastern Connecticut Out Of The Darkness Walk\nDate: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\nCheck-In: 10 a.m.\nEvent Start: 11 a.m.\nEvent Hours: 11 a.m.–2 p.m.\nLocation: McCook Point Park\nAddress: 12 Atlantic Street\, Niantic\, CT 06357\nOrganizer: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention\, Connecticut Chapter\nAdmission: Free\nRegistration: Advance registration is encouraged\nWalk Length: Between 1 and 3 miles; final 2026 route to be announced\nFormat: Noncompetitive community walk\nProgram: Opening ceremony\, hope and healing activities\, resource tables and complimentary Honor Beads\nFundraising: Encouraged but not required to participate\nWalk T-Shirt: Participants who individually raise at least $150 by September 12 receive the official Out of the Darkness Walk shirt at the event\nDonations: Accepted through December 31\, 2026\nEvent Contact: Natasha Mozden\nPhone: 860-917-8831\nEmail: natashamozden@gmail.com \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nTo register for the walk or make a donation\, click the Event Website link below. \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown. \n\nIf you or someone you know is in crisis\, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.\nReference:\nAmerican Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Connecticut Chapter \nAmerican Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Out of the Darkness Walks \nAmerican Foundation for Suicide Prevention – Honor Beads

SUMMARY:Natural History Walks at Napatree Point Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:Natural History Walks invite visitors to discover the remarkable wildlife\, coastal habitats\, and rich natural history of the Napatree Point Conservation Area during guided Saturday morning walks throughout August. Hosted by The Watch Hill Conservancy\, these 90-minute programs pair participants with experienced naturalists who share insights into one of southern New England’s most ecologically significant barrier beaches while exploring its ever-changing landscape. (The Watch Hill Conservancy) \nStretching nearly two miles from Watch Hill into Little Narragansett Bay\, Napatree Point is a nationally recognized conservation area known for its pristine dunes\, salt marshes\, tidal lagoons\, and diverse wildlife. The preserve provides critical habitat for migratory shorebirds\, nesting species\, marine life\, and native coastal plants\, making every walk a little different depending on the season\, weather\, and wildlife activity. Guided by Conservancy naturalists\, participants learn how these fragile ecosystems work together while gaining a deeper appreciation for the area’s history and ongoing conservation efforts. \nEach walk is shaped by the interests of the group and what nature has to offer that morning. Topics may include coastal plants\, birds\, marine life\, dune ecology\, or the history of Napatree itself. Whether you’re an avid birder\, an aspiring naturalist\, or simply looking for a peaceful Saturday morning along the Rhode Island shoreline\, the program offers an engaging way to experience one of the region’s most beautiful coastal preserves. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult\, and advance registration is required.
