Beginning at 6:30 p.m.\, Brother Guy Consolmagno\, S.J.\, will share stories from his work at one of the world’s most unusual scientific institutions\, answer audience questions\, and\, weather permitting\, lead an opportunity to observe the night sky from the island’s great lawn. \nThe free program takes place at St. Edmund’s Retreat Center\, where visitors will gather in St. Raphael’s Conference Room before heading outdoors if conditions allow. The evening offers a chance to hear directly from a planetary scientist whose work connects the study of the universe with centuries of religious and intellectual history. \nWhat Does the Vatican Have to Do With Astronomy?\nFor many people\, the Vatican brings to mind St. Peter’s Basilica\, the Sistine Chapel\, and the history of the Catholic Church. \nA scientific observatory might not be the first thing that comes to mind. \nYet the Vatican has a longstanding connection to astronomy\, with roots reaching back to the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582. \nThat reform addressed a problem with the calendar then in use\, which had gradually drifted out of alignment with the solar year. Accurate astronomical observations and calculations helped establish the calendar system still used across much of the world today. \nThe Vatican Observatory carries that scientific tradition into the present. \nIts researchers study the universe using the methods and tools of modern astronomy\, contributing to the broader scientific community. \nBrother Guy will discuss the observatory’s history\, its present-day research\, and what it’s like to work as a scientist within an institution better known for its religious mission. \nA Scientist Who Sees No Conflict Between Faith and Discovery\nBrother Guy Consolmagno is both a Jesuit brother and a planetary scientist. \nHe serves as Director of the Vatican Observatory and President of the Vatican Observatory Foundation\, bringing scientific training and religious experience to his work. \nOriginally from Detroit\, he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a doctorate in planetary science from the University of Arizona. \nHis academic career also included postdoctoral research at Harvard and MIT. \nDuring Sunday’s presentation\, he’ll explore an idea central to the Vatican Observatory’s mission: that serious scientific investigation and religious faith need not be in conflict. \nThe observatory’s scientists pursue research because understanding the physical universe has value in its own right. \nFor Brother Guy\, the discoveries of astronomy can also inspire wonder and reflection. \nHis presentation will examine that relationship while offering a look at the people and research behind the Vatican Observatory. \nQuestions\, Answers\, and a Chance to Look Up\nThe evening begins with Brother Guy’s presentation at 6:30 p.m.\, followed by an opportunity for audience questions. \nVisitors can ask about the Vatican Observatory\, astronomy\, scientific research\, or the relationship between science and religion. \nIf the weather cooperates\, the gathering will then move outdoors for stargazing on the great lawn. \nEnders Island’s waterfront setting offers an appealing backdrop for looking toward the night sky\, away from some of the distractions of busier commercial areas. \nThe organizers have not specified which celestial objects will be observed or whether telescopes will be provided. \nOutdoor stargazing is weather-dependent\, so the indoor presentation remains the central scheduled activity. \nAn Evening on Historic Enders Island\nSt. Edmund’s Retreat Center occupies Enders Island\, a small island off the Mystic shoreline known for its peaceful grounds and waterfront views. \nThe property hosts retreats\, educational programs\, and gatherings focused on reflection and learning. \nIts setting provides a fitting location for an evening that invites visitors to consider questions extending far beyond everyday life. \nThe program welcomes those interested in astronomy\, the history of science\, and the philosophical questions raised by studying the universe. \nNo scientific background is necessary to appreciate the subject. \nHow to Attend\nStories and Stargazing with Brother Guy takes place Sunday\, November 8\, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. \nThe presentation begins in St. Raphael’s Conference Room at St. Edmund’s Retreat Center. Signs will direct visitors to the meeting location. \nAdmission is free\, and registration is available via the Event Ticketing link at the bottom of this page.. \nGuests interested in the outdoor portion should dress for a November evening along the Connecticut shoreline. \nWhether you’re curious about distant planets\, the history of the Vatican Observatory\, or how science and faith approach life’s larger questions\, the evening offers an unusual opportunity to hear from someone who has spent his career exploring those connections. \nAnd if the skies are clear\, the conversation can continue beneath the stars. \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.
