SUMMARY:Community Shred Day in Baltic Adds Free Hard Drive Destruction and a Food Drive
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This was rescheduled from September 26 due to the weather.\nCommunity Shred Day in Baltic Adds Free Hard Drive Destruction and a Food Drive Saturday\, Oct 3\, giving residents a free way to dispose of old financial records\, tax documents\, and other sensitive paperwork while also tackling something much easier to overlook: the personal information sitting on an old computer hard drive. \nThe event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Mary’s Church in Baltic\, and is open to the entire community. Each person can bring up to three file-size boxes of confidential personal or business documents for complimentary secure shredding. \nThis particular Shred Day adds free physical destruction of computer hard drives\, with one significant limitation: organizers will accept only 60 hard drives during the event. \nChelsea Groton Bank is organizing the morning\, which also doubles as a food drive for Care & Share of East Lyme. \nWhy Throwing Away an Old Hard Drive Isn’t Enough\nPaper records present an obvious privacy problem. Bank statements\, tax documents\, medical paperwork\, old bills\, and other records can contain names\, account information\, and other details most people wouldn’t want sitting intact in a recycling bin. \nOld computers create a less visible version of the same problem. \nDeleting files doesn’t necessarily eliminate the underlying data from a hard drive. Even formatting a drive may leave information recoverable with specialized software\, depending on how the drive was erased. \nPhysical destruction addresses the problem differently by damaging the storage device itself rather than relying solely on deletion. \nProfessional data-destruction companies use methods including crushing\, punching and shredding drives to make the storage media unusable. For someone with an old computer drive sitting in a desk drawer or basement because they weren’t sure how to dispose of it securely\, Saturday provides an unusual free opportunity to deal with it. \nBecause the event has a 60-drive maximum\, anyone specifically coming for hard drive destruction may want to arrive earlier in the three-hour window. \nThree Boxes of Paper Can Disappear\, Too\nThe document side of the event is straightforward. \nResidents can bring up to three file-size boxes containing confidential personal or business paperwork for complimentary shredding. \nFor many households\, that makes September a useful time for a paperwork purge. Tax records and supporting financial documents often need to be retained for a period of time\, while plenty of other paperwork simply accumulates long after it has stopped serving a purpose. \nShredding allows documents containing sensitive information to be destroyed before the paper enters the recycling stream. \nAnd unlike feeding a few pages at a time through a small home shredder\, a community shredding event is designed to handle boxes of accumulated records at once. \nBring Food for Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank\nThere’s another reason to fill a box before heading to the library. \nOrganizers will collect nonperishable food for Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank\, the local organization serving residents who need assistance with food and other basic necessities. \nThe requested donations are canned and dry goods\, but organizers specifically ask that people not bring food in glass containers. \nItems currently requested include tuna\, canned meats\, stew\, vegetables\, fruit\, pasta\, rice\, instant potatoes\, dried beans\, peanut butter and baby food. \nThat turns a morning spent getting rid of things into an opportunity to bring something useful along. \nThe shredding\, hard drive destruction and event admission are all free to the community. \n  \nDetails\nEvent: Community Shred Day with Hard Drive Destruction\nDate: Saturday\, Sept. 26\, 2026\nTime: 9 a.m.–noon\nLocation: St. Mary’s Church\nAddress: 70 West Main Street\, Baltic\, CT 06330\nAdmission: Free and open to the community\nDocument Limit: Up to three file-size boxes of confidential personal or business documents\nHard Drives: Free hard drive destruction; limited to 60 hard drives total\nFood Drive: Nonperishable food donations collected for Care & Share of East Lyme\nRequested Food: Tuna\, meats\, stew\, vegetables\, fruits\, pasta\, rice\, instant potatoes\, dried beans\, peanut butter and baby food\nFood Restrictions: No glass containers\nOrganizer/Contact: Chelsea Groton Bank (860) 448-4250 \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.
