DESCRIPTION:Horseshoe Crab Community Science Program – Project Limulus gives participants a rare opportunity to contribute to real scientific research while getting an up-close look at one of the planet’s oldest surviving species. Hosted by The Watch Hill Conservancy\, this program marks the organization’s 20th year participating in Project Limulus\, a long-running effort to monitor horseshoe crab populations throughout the region. \nOften called “living fossils\,” horseshoe crabs have existed for hundreds of millions of years and continue to play a vital role in coastal ecosystems. Volunteers assist researchers by surveying spawning activity along the shoreline during the high tides associated with new and full moons\, when horseshoe crabs are most likely to come ashore. The data collected helps scientists track population trends and better understand the health of these remarkable animals. \nParticipants should be prepared for a physically demanding field experience that may involve walking up to two miles\, often in shallow water\, while conducting observations and collecting data. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to Sail! \nAdult Beginner Sailing Courses at Mystic Seaport Museum are perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to learn how to sail. These fun Tuesday evening classes are open to beginners aged 14 and up with little to no sailing experience. The basic adult sailing course is offered June 16 through July 7 from 6:30-9:00 pm on Mystic Seaport’s picturesque historic waterfront. \nCourse students will learn sailing fundamentals such as how sailboats go and stop\, basic sailing terms\, knot tying\, rigging and de-rigging a sailboat\, safety guidelines\, points of sail\, basic small-boat handling\, and basic rules of the road. Classes will be held aboard Dyer Dhows. The stable Dyer Dwarf is ideal for learning to sail and has been introducing newcomers to our sport for decades. As students learn the basics in a classroom setting\, they will build confidence as they put their new skills into practice. \nGain a new hobby\, spend more time on the water\, or learn the basics you’ll need for years of sailing adventures to come!
