Under some of the darkest skies in Rhode Island\, the experience feels less like a formal science program and more like stumbling into a community of people quietly obsessed with the universe. \nAs darkness settles over Ninigret Park\, visitors can expect views that change depending on the season and sky conditions\, often including Saturn’s rings\, Jupiter’s moons\, the cratered surface of the Moon\, and deep space objects rarely visible in brighter suburban areas. The observatory’s Sky Theatre and telescope stations create an immersive environment where curious first-timers mingle with amateur astronomers and longtime stargazers. There’s something strangely calming about standing in near silence while strangers take turns peering into the cosmos\, especially on clear summer nights when the Milky Way stretches visibly across the sky. \nThe observatory typically opens around 8:30 p.m. on Friday nights and remains active through at least 10:30 p.m.\, sometimes later depending on weather and viewing conditions. DESCRIPTION:Horseshoe Crab Family Walk at Napatree Point invites families and nature lovers to explore one of the shoreline’s most fascinating ancient species during a guided outdoor experience on Saturday\, May 30\, June 13\, and June 27 from 9 to 10 a.m. Hosted at the Napatree Point Conservation Area beach entrance on Fort Road in Westerly\, the free program gives participants a chance to learn about horseshoe crabs and their unique role in the coastal ecosystem surrounding Little Narragansett Bay. Presented by The Watch Hill Conservancy\, the walk combines environmental education with a relaxed outdoor experience along one of SW Rhode Island’s most scenic coastal landscapes. \nDuring the guided walk\, participants will discover why horseshoe crabs are often referred to as “living fossils\,” having survived for more than 300 million years. The program also explores the species’ importance to modern medical research as well as their ecological significance to Napatree Point and the surrounding shoreline environment. Set against the dunes\, beaches\, and saltwater views of the conservation area\, the event offers a hands-on opportunity to better understand one of the region’s most unusual and historically resilient marine species. \nDesigned for all ages\, the Horseshoe Crab Family Walk is structured as a 60-minute program\, allowing attendees to take advantage of free parking along Bay Street while spending part of the morning outdoors near the water. Light rain will not cancel the walk\, though severe weather may lead to cancellation notifications by email. Registration is required. \n
