The 7:30 p.m. program features six musicians performing three works whose instrumentation changes throughout the evening\, from the delicate pairing of violin and harp to a full piano quartet. \nThe concert opens with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Fantasie for Violin and Harp\, a graceful work that gives both instruments room to shine. Claude Debussy’s Sonata for Flute\, Viola and Harp follows with an unusual combination of instruments and shifting colors before the evening moves into considerably bigger territory with Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor. \nPresented by Chestnut Hill Concerts at The Kate\, the performance is part of the organization’s long-running summer chamber music tradition on the Connecticut shoreline. Rather than relying on a permanent ensemble\, the series brings accomplished musicians together in different combinations\, allowing each week’s repertoire to determine who’s onstage. \nThe Program\nSaint-Saëns: Fantasie for Violin and Harp\, Op. 124\nCamille Saint-Saëns composed his Fantasie in 1907\, pairing two instruments capable of both delicacy and considerable virtuosity. \nThe violin carries long melodic lines while the harp does far more than provide accompaniment\, moving between shimmering textures and intricate exchanges with the violin. It’s an intimate opening to the evening and a showcase for the unusual chemistry between the two instruments. \nPerformers: Todd Phillips\, violin; Stacey Shames\, harp. \nDebussy: Sonata for Flute\, Viola and Harp\nClaude Debussy wrote his Sonata for Flute\, Viola and Harp in 1915\, near the end of his life. Its instrumentation was unusual then and remains one of the work’s defining features. \nInstead of the weight of a traditional piano or string ensemble\, Debussy uses flute\, viola and harp to create constantly changing textures. The flute can float above the ensemble\, the viola adds a darker middle voice\, and the harp supplies both rhythm and color. \nPerformers: Laura Gilbert\, flute; Matthew Sinno\, viola; Stacey Shames\, harp. \nBrahms: Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor\, Op. 25\nThe second half moves from French delicacy to one of Johannes Brahms’ most substantial chamber works. \nWritten for piano\, violin\, viola and cello\, the Piano Quartet No. 1 was completed when Brahms was still in his twenties. Across four movements\, the piece moves through lyrical passages\, darker moments and increasingly restless energy before reaching its famous finale. \nThat final movement\, marked Rondo alla Zingarese\, draws on Hungarian and Romani-influenced musical styles that fascinated Brahms. DiMenna built Story Songs of the 70’s around the thing these three writers shared despite sounding quite different: they could put a character\, a journey\, or an entire life inside a few minutes of music. The arrangements keep acoustic guitar and vocals at the center while expanding into a fully amplified folk-rock performance. DiMenna rotates songs seasonally\, and this version leans toward maritime stories\, warmer rhythms\, and songs suited to a summer night. The Kate’s intimate theater should fit the concept particularly well. These are songs where the words matter as much as the melody. \nAbout Tom DiMenna\nDiMenna is a Maine-based singer-songwriter\, guitarist\, and performer whose route to the stage has been anything but conventional. \nHe played guitar in college while also playing football\, then spent a year in Italy quarterbacking the semi-professional Bologna Warriors. Comedy followed. DiMenna studied improv at Second City and schools in Chicago\, Los Angeles\, and New York\, eventually developing a sketch about the ghost of actor Telly Savalas into an Off-Broadway production that ran for several years. \nMusic eventually pulled him back. \nDiMenna released his album You Know Me\, My Devil Says in 2020 and began performing a show centered on the music of Cat Stevens. That production sold out opera houses along the Maine coast in 2021. He later expanded the concept to include Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin\, creating the foundation for Story Songs of the 70’s. \nHis background in comedy hasn’t entirely disappeared\, either. Songs such as “Father and Son” and “Peace Train” combine memorable melodies with questions about family\, identity\, change\, and the world around us. \nHarry Chapin frequently built his songs around characters. “Taxi\,” “Mr. Tanner\,” and “Cat’s in the Cradle” unfold almost like short stories\, while “30\,000 Pounds of Bananas” proves a story song can also be funny\, strange\, and increasingly chaotic. \nDiMenna’s show puts those approaches beside one another rather than separating them into three individual tribute sets. \nThe Summer Edition\nStory Songs of the 70’s is designed as a seasonal concert series\, so the repertoire changes throughout the year. \nFor summer\, DiMenna and his collaborators lean into an easier-going\, coastal folk atmosphere while keeping enough tempo changes and sing-along material to prevent the night from becoming two hours of quiet acoustic ballads.
