The premise is straightforward: eat oysters\, sample local food and drinks\, listen to three bands and raise money for an organization working to make recreation accessible to people with disabilities. \nAnd the oysters really are local. \nFive oyster producers are on the 2026 lineup: Behan Family Farm\, Watch Hill Oysters\, Niantic Bay Oyster Farm\, Sixpenny Oyster Farm and CT Cultured Oysters. Together they give festivalgoers a chance to sample shellfish from several growers rather than getting the experience of a single raw bar. \nBeer\, Cocktails and Plenty Beyond Oysters\nThe beverage lineup has a similarly local focus. Niantic Public House & Brewery\, Grey Sail Brewing\, Tox Brewing Company\, Myrcene Ale Co.\, Outer Light Brewing Company and Taylor Brooke Brewery are among those scheduled\, along with By the Bay Niantic and cocktails from Sip\, Sip Hooray. \nFor anyone who doesn’t consider a dozen oysters lunch\, the food lineup broadens considerably. \nThe Black Sheep\, Frank’s Wood-Fired Pizza\, Keifer’s Kettle Korn\, Kona Shaved Ice\, Constantine’s on the Bay\, Yummy Wagon and Beach Buns Hot Dog Stand are among the announced food vendors. \nFood and drinks operate on a ticket system. Tickets cost $1 each and can be purchased with cash or credit at festival ticket tables. Individual vendors determine how many tickets their items cost\, so that $1 is the value of a ticket\, not the price of an oyster or drink. \nAdmission itself is free. \nThree Bands\, Five and a Half Hours of Music\nMusic starts when the festival opens and continues through most of the afternoon. \nAzalea Drive gets the first slot from noon to 2 p.m. \nFusion takes over from 2 to 4 p.m. \nThen southeastern Connecticut favorite Wicked Peach closes the musical lineup from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The longtime regional rock band has become a familiar presence at festivals\, clubs and outdoor stages around southeastern Connecticut\, making them a natural choice for the festival’s late-afternoon set. \nWith the performances scheduled consecutively\, visitors can hear live music for five and a half of the festival’s six hours. \nA Festival With a Larger Purpose\nThe oysters and beer may get people onto the green\, but the reason for the festival is the Miracle League of Southeastern Connecticut. \nThe nonprofit works to provide recreational opportunities for children and others with physical\, cognitive and developmental challenges. Its work includes accessible sports programs and a specially designed athletic field intended to remove barriers that can prevent people with disabilities from participating in traditional recreational sports. \nThe Niantic Bay Oyster Festival is one of the organization’s annual fundraisers\, and organizers say 100% of festival proceeds benefit the Miracle League of Southeastern Connecticut. \nThat gives every plate of oysters and round of drinks a second purpose. \nThe festival also includes cornhole and a children’s activity area\, making this more than an adults-only oyster-and-beer afternoon. \nHow the Festival Works\nThere’s no admission charge\, although parking on St. John’s Green costs $5. \nFood and beverage tickets are sold in $1 increments\, with both cash and credit cards accepted at the ticket tables. DESCRIPTION:Southeastern Connecticut Out Of The Darkness Walk brings hundreds of people together at McCook Point Park in Niantic on Saturday\, September 12\, for a morning centered on remembrance\, support\, and a shared determination to prevent suicide. \nOrganized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Connecticut Chapter\, the annual community walk welcomes people who have lost someone to suicide\, those with their own lived experience\, friends and family members\, mental health professionals\, and anyone who wants to support suicide prevention. \nCheck-in begins at 10 a.m.\, followed by the event at 11 a.m. Participation is free\, although advance registration is encouraged. The walk itself is noncompetitive and will cover between one and three miles\, with organizers posting the final Niantic route as Walk Day approaches. \nMore Than a Fundraising Walk\nOut of the Darkness Walks take place in hundreds of communities around the country each year\, but AFSP deliberately designed them to be more than charity walks. \nFor many participants\, the reason for showing up is deeply personal. \nSome walk in memory of a child\, parent\, sibling\, spouse\, friend or coworker lost to suicide. Others have survived a suicide attempt or experienced suicidal thoughts themselves. Some come to support someone they love\, while others simply believe mental health and suicide prevention deserve more attention. \nThe result is an event where people who might never otherwise meet discover that they share an experience. \nThat idea is built into the name. Out of the Darkness is about bringing suicide into the open\, replacing silence and stigma with conversation and making it easier for people to seek help before reaching a crisis. \nThe Niantic event includes an opening ceremony\, activities focused on hope and healing\, resource tables and AFSP’s Honor Bead program. \nThe Meaning Behind the Honor Beads\nOne of the most recognizable parts of an Out of the Darkness Walk is also one of its quietest. \nParticipants receive complimentary Honor Beads\, with different colors representing the reason a person is walking. \nWhite represents the loss of a child. Red represents the loss of a spouse or partner. Gold represents the loss of a parent. Orange represents the loss of a sibling\, while purple represents the loss of another relative or friend. \nOther colors speak to different experiences. Teal represents someone who has struggled personally or attempted suicide. Green represents a personal struggle or attempt\, while blue shows general support for suicide prevention. Silver represents the loss of a first responder or member of the military. \nParticipants may wear more than one strand. \nThe beads create a kind of visual language throughout the walk. Someone who has difficulty approaching a stranger and explaining why they’re there may notice another person wearing the same color and immediately understand that they share something significant. \nFor an event dealing with experiences that can be difficult to put into words\, that recognition can matter. \nWhy AFSP Walks\nThe American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was established in 1987 by a group that included researchers and families who had lost loved ones to suicide. \nIts work now stretches across scientific research\, public education\, advocacy\, community programs and support for people affected by suicide loss. \nThe Out of the Darkness program has become one of the organization’s most visible efforts. AFSP reported nearly 600 Community and Campus Walks and more than 220\,000 participants in its 2025 annual reporting. \nThe money raised through the walks helps fund research into suicide and its prevention\, educational programs in schools and workplaces\, advocacy for public policies related to mental health and suicide prevention\, and programs supporting people who have experienced suicide loss. \nFunds raised through the Southeastern Connecticut Walk specifically help support AFSP programs and work across Connecticut. \nWalking During Suicide Prevention Week\nThis year’s Niantic walk falls at a particularly meaningful point on the calendar. \nSeptember is National Suicide Prevention Month\, and September 6–12 is National Suicide Prevention Week in 2026. World Suicide Prevention Day takes place Thursday\, September 10\, just two days before the Southeastern Connecticut walk. \nAFSP is using the month to encourage people to talk more openly about suicide prevention\, learn how to recognize when someone may need help and become involved in their own communities. \nThe September 12 gathering at McCook Point Park puts that national effort into a distinctly local setting. \nPeople aren’t simply sharing a social media post or wearing a ribbon. They’re physically showing up beside neighbors who may be carrying grief\, supporting someone who’s struggling or dealing with experiences of their own. \nFundraising Is Encouraged\, But It Isn’t Required\nThere is no registration fee or fundraising minimum to participate in the Southeastern Connecticut Out of the Darkness Walk. \nPeople can register individually\, join an existing team or create a team of their own. Each registered participant receives a personal fundraising page that can be customized with a photograph and the story behind why they’re walking. \nAFSP also offers incentives for participants who choose to fundraise. \nAnyone who individually raises at least $150 by September 12 earns the official 2026 Out of the Darkness Walk T-shirt at the event. Participants who raise more than $250 qualify for an additional recognition gift sent after Walk Day. \nBut raising money isn’t a condition of joining the community. \nSomeone who simply needs to be there can walk. \nDonations to the Southeastern Connecticut event remain open through December 31\, 2026. \nMcCook Point Provides a Waterfront Setting\nThe walk takes place at McCook Point Park\, overlooking Long Island Sound in Niantic. \nThe East Lyme town park encompasses McCook Point and the adjoining McCook Beach\, with lawns\, walking areas and views across Niantic Bay and Long Island Sound. Its combination of open green space and waterfront makes it particularly well suited to an event that includes gathering\, remembrance and a community walk. \nParticipants should plan to arrive before the 11 a.m. start if they need to check in. Registration opens at 10 a.m.\, providing time for walkers to gather\, visit resource tables and take part in activities before the formal program begins. \nThe exact 2026 walking route has not yet been announced. The approximately 3.3-mile route follows hiking trails through the preserve\, including a stretch by Clark Pond\, with exposed rocks\, roots and uneven footing along the way. Proceeds go directly toward maintaining the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve. \nThe land is the reason for the event. \nMore Than 450 Acres of Coastal Forest\nThe Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve protects more than 450 acres in Niantic\, creating a large block of forest remarkably close to the developed shoreline. \nVisitors find ponds and wetlands\, rocky ridges\, glacial features and stretches of forest threaded together by miles of trails. \nThe preserve’s main entrance is reached from Memorial Park Drive off Route 161\, with parking near the athletic fields. \nFor Saturday’s race\, organizers say parking will be available adjacent to the preserve. Overflow parking will be available at East Lyme Town Hall at 108 Pennsylvania Avenue. \nThe preserve is maintained with help from Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve\, the nonprofit organization behind Run for the Hills. \nThat maintenance takes work. \nTrails need attention. Invasive plants need to be managed. Signs and educational resources need to be maintained. Storms and erosion can create new problems. \nRun for the Hills turns one morning of recreation into a fundraiser for that continuing stewardship. \nThe Oswegatchie Hills Are Bigger Than the Existing Preserve\nThe protected nature preserve is also part of a larger environmental story. \nFor years\, conservation organizations have fought to protect additional undeveloped land in the Oswegatchie Hills overlooking the Niantic River. \nFriends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve and Save the River-Save the Hills have worked with other conservation advocates to preserve more of the surrounding forest and prevent large-scale development in the watershed. \nThat’s where the geography becomes particularly important. \nThe hills don’t exist in isolation from the river below. \nRain falling across the landscape moves through soil\, wetlands\, streams and groundwater on its way toward the Niantic River. Forested land can absorb rainfall and slow runoff before it reaches the estuary. \nProtecting the hills therefore has implications beyond preserving hiking trails. \nIt’s also part of protecting the watershed. \nLast Year’s Race Drew More Than 120 Runners\nRun for the Hills has grown quickly. \nThe fourth annual race in 2025 drew more than 120 runners to the preserve. \nParticipants ranged from 8 to 77 years old and came from eight states\, including competitors traveling from as far away as South Carolina\, Georgia and New Hampshire. \nOrganizers reported that the race brought many first-time visitors into the preserve. \nThat may be one of the event’s most useful side effects. \nPeople can read about open-space preservation.
