Hands stay behind the back while competitors attempt to finish half of a full-size pie using nothing but their mouths. \nIt’s going to get messy. \n4:00 p.m. — Milking Contest \n5:00 p.m. — Egg Toss \nSunday\n1:00 p.m. — Corn Shucking Contest \n2:00 p.m. — Senior Pie Eating Contest \n3:00 p.m. — Milking Contest \n4:00 p.m. — Egg Toss \nSome contests require advance registration\, generally one hour before the event\, and participation may be limited. \nStage ’67\nNeed a break from the midway? \nStage ’67 is dedicated to family entertainment throughout the fair. \nFarmer K: Stories From the Barnyard brings farm-themed storytelling to the stage on multiple days. \nThe Rhode Island Circus Space also performs throughout the five-day fair with circus arts and family entertainment. \nWeekend circus performances include: \nFriday: 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.\nSunday: 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. \nCome Hungry\nYou shouldn’t have much trouble finding something to eat. \nMore than 130 food and craft vendors participate in the Washington County Fair\, creating an enormous marketplace throughout the grounds. \nFair food ranges from Rhode Island and New England favorites to the classics you probably started thinking about the moment somebody mentioned going to the fair. \nExpect choices including: \n\nBurgers\nBarbecue\nSeafood\nSteak sandwiches\nStrawberry shortcake\nFresh-squeezed lemonade\nTraditional carnival food\nDesserts and sweet treats\n\nOne interesting detail: many of the food vendors are operated by nonprofit organizations\, so that plate of fair food may also be supporting a local group. \nMany food vendors accept cash only\, although ATMs are available on the fairgrounds. \nCoolers and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. \nDon’t Skip the Exhibit Buildings\nThe exhibit buildings are easy to overlook when there’s a midway glowing outside. \nGo inside anyway. \nThis is where you’ll find the quieter side of county-fair competition: vegetables grown in someone’s backyard\, carefully arranged flowers\, photography\, quilts\, needlework\, ceramics\, crafts\, canned goods\, baking entries\, and other projects competing for ribbons. \nThere’s also a 4-H Exhibit Hall where young people display projects ranging from agriculture and animal care to gardening and other skills. \nThese exhibits may not have flashing lights. \nThey don’t need them. \nThey’re part of what separates a county fair from a summer carnival. \nNearly 60 Years of Washington County Fair History\nThe Washington County Fair began in 1967 on the grounds of the Perryville Grange in Wakefield. \nIt was created to emphasize the importance of agriculture in everyday life while reviving the traditional county fair experience. \nIt didn’t take long to outgrow its original home. \nAfter only two years\, organizers purchased land in Richmond. The property included a stand of pine trees on a sloping hill that organizers envisioned as a natural amphitheater. \nThere was just one problem. \nThey had to build practically everything. \nLand needed clearing. Boulders had to be removed. Booths had to be constructed. A stage had to be built. \nGrange members and other volunteers did much of the work themselves. \nThat volunteer tradition continues today. The Washington County Fair is owned and operated by the Washington County Pomona Grange\, and organizers begin preparing for the next fair almost as soon as the previous one ends. \nOver the decades\, the grounds have expanded to include additional pulling rings\, livestock facilities\, exhibit spaces\, and an agricultural museum filled with equipment and artifacts from Rhode Island’s farming past. \nThe midway has gotten bigger. \nThe concerts have gotten bigger. \nBut the goal hasn’t changed much since 1967: create an authentic county fair where families can experience a piece of Rhode Island’s agricultural heritage. \nAdmission\nAdults and ages 11+: $14 at the gate \nChildren 10 and under: FREE \nGate admission includes: \n\nMain Stage concerts\nSpecial entertainment\nAgricultural events\nLivestock shows\nExhibits and displays\nContests\nTractor pulls\nHorse and livestock pulls\nFarm museum admission\n\nMidway rides require separate tickets or wristbands. \nGate purchases are cash only. \nSame-day re-entry is permitted with a hand stamp. \nThe Washington County Fair is held rain or shine. \nParking\nParking is free. \nDesignated parking is available at the fairgrounds\, with additional off-site lots used during busy periods. \nThe Beaver River off-site lot operates: \nThursday & Friday: 4:00 p.m. to close\nSaturday & Sunday: 12:00 p.m. to close \nShuttle service is available from the Beaver River lot. \nThe final shuttle from the fairgrounds generally leaves approximately 30 minutes after the Main Stage concert. \nAccessible parking is available near the fair entrance for vehicles displaying the appropriate placard. \nVisitors should follow fair staff and parking attendants rather than parking on surrounding private property or in undesignated areas. \nWhat to Know Before You Go\nA few things can make the day easier: \n\nBring cash. Gate admission and many food vendors are cash only.\nWear comfortable shoes. The fairgrounds are large and you’ll do plenty of walking.\nCheck the day’s schedule when you arrive. Livestock shows\, pulls\, contests\, concerts\, and children’s activities happen throughout the day.\nIf the kids want to enter a contest\, check registration requirements early. Several competitions require registration before the scheduled start.\nMidway rides don’t open until noon\, but the fairgrounds open much earlier.\nDon’t bring a cooler or alcoholic beverages.\nGive yourself more time than you think you’ll need.\n\nMost importantly\, don’t spend the entire day on the midway. \nRide the Ferris wheel. Absolutely. \nEat something fried that you probably wouldn’t eat anywhere else. \nBut then walk through a livestock barn. Watch a horse pull. Look at the vegetables somebody grew well enough to earn a blue ribbon. Before settling in Rhode Island\, Clare lived in Chicago and Los Angeles and worked as an actress in film and television. She later returned to music as a singer and songwriter. \nChris O’Donnell handles drums and vocals. His background includes study with jazz musicians Ernie Watts and Jerry Bergonzi\, along with work as a drummer and arranger with The Duende Project. \nDave McCarthy brings a classical contrabass background to the electric bass\, but his playing with Earl Knightwood moves from New Orleans grooves to Memphis-style soul. Rather than accidentally give you a bio for the wrong Madison Blues\, I’d keep the artist description on the event page limited to what Mohegan Sun itself confirms. \nMadison Blues Takes the Sunday Slot\nMadison Blues is one of four acts booked for the final stretch of Sun Patio Acoustic Sundays in August. \nDavid Davis performs August 9\, followed by Madison Blues on August 16\, Tom Burgess on August 23 and Mollie Pop closing the series August 30. \nThe format is intentionally more relaxed than the big Friday-night tribute shows or Saturday concerts that take over the same space. DESCRIPTION:Mullett at Wolf Den brings the sound\, spectacle\, and gloriously excessive hair of 1980s arena rock to Mohegan Sun on Sunday\, August 16. Bon Jovi\, Def Leppard\, Van Halen\, Journey\, Mötley Crüe\, and other staples of ’80s rock all feed into a performance that combines the songs with the clothes\, stage personalities\, and over-the-top attitude of the decade. \nThe Wolf Den should be an especially good fit. It’s an intimate room compared with the arenas where much of this music was born\, putting the audience close to the band for what is essentially an ’80s rock party in the middle of Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Earth. Admission is free\, but seating is limited and first come\, first served. \nAbout Mullett\nMullett has been performing its tribute to 1980s rock since 2010\, appearing at casinos\, theaters\, clubs\, corporate events\, festivals\, and other venues around the country. \nRather than recreating a particular concert or impersonating one famous band\, Mullett pulls from the larger arena-rock era. The 7 p.m. concert features songs including “Déjà Vu\,” “Wooden Ships\,” “Helpless” and “Carry On\,” performed by an ensemble whose connection to this music extends well beyond being fans of the original band. \nOur House was created in 2024 around musicians who had actually worked with David Crosby and others in his musical circle. Guitarists Steve Postell and Jeff Pevar now lead the project\, joined for the 2026 tour by Kipp Lennon\, Teresa James\, Michael Visceglia and Clint de Ganon. Legendary rock photographer Henry Diltz adds another dimension to the show\, using his photographs and stories to take audiences inside the world that produced the music. The Garde opened in downtown New London in 1926 as a movie and vaudeville palace and celebrates its 100th anniversary during the 2026–27 season. Its restored Moroccan-inspired auditorium provides a fitting room for a concert built around songs that have survived for more than half a century. (Thames River Heritage Park) \nMore Than a Traditional Tribute Show\nOur House has an unusual advantage over most bands devoted to the music of Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young: several of these musicians have lived inside the music they’re performing. \nThe project debuted in 2024 with a lineup assembled largely from musicians who had performed with David Crosby over the years. Jeff Pevar and Steve Postell continued the project after that initial tour\, reshaping the ensemble while maintaining those musical connections. \nThat gives the concert a different starting point from a conventional tribute show. The goal isn’t to dress like Crosby\, Stills\, Nash or Young or recreate their stage mannerisms. Instead\, the musicians approach the catalog through their own experiences playing alongside some of the people who created it. \nThe Musicians\nSteve Postell serves as guitarist and musical director. He played guitar with David Crosby and contributed to Crosby’s Sky Trails album. Postell also co-wrote a song for Crosby’s final studio album\, For Free\, and his long list of collaborators includes John Oates\, Jennifer Warnes\, Kenny Loggins and Pure Prairie League. The guitarist worked with David Crosby\, Graham Nash and Crosby\, Stills & Nash and was a member of CPR\, Crosby’s band with keyboardist and son James Raymond. Pevar has also performed with Phil Lesh & Friends\, Ray Charles and Marc Cohn. \nKipp Lennon handles vocals and guitar. His career includes work with David Crosby\, Roger Waters and Ambrosia. \nTeresa James\, singer and pianist with The Rhythm Tramps\, adds another lead voice to the ensemble. \nMichael Visceglia plays bass and is known for his longtime work with Suzanne Vega. \nClint de Ganon handles drums\, with a résumé that includes work with Stevie Wonder and Art Garfunkel. It’s the foundation. \nThe Music of CSNY\nCrosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young created a remarkably deep catalog despite spending relatively little time together as a four-member group. \nDavid Crosby\, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash released their first album as Crosby\, Stills & Nash in 1969. Neil Young joined shortly afterward\, and Déjà Vu followed in 1970. \nThe combination produced some of the defining music of its era\, blending folk\, rock\, country and intricate vocal harmony with songs that could be intensely personal one moment and openly political the next. \nOur House draws from that larger catalog rather than a single album or period. \nThe New London program is expected to include classics such as “Déjà Vu\,” “Wooden Ships\,” “Helpless” and “Carry On.” (Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce) \nThat opens a considerable amount of musical territory\, from acoustic harmonies and reflective songwriting to electric guitar-driven rock. \nHenry Diltz: The Stories Behind the Photographs\nThere’s another member of the production who doesn’t play an instrument. \nHenry Diltz was there with a camera. \nThe legendary rock photographer documented many of the musicians who defined the Laurel Canyon era and photographed the cover of Crosby\, Stills & Nash’s 1969 debut album. \nFor Our House\, Diltz contributes photographs and stories that appear as part of the performance\, turning portions of the concert into a visual history of the musicians and the world surrounding the songs. \nThat makes the evening part concert and part firsthand remembrance. Instead of simply hearing music from the period\, audiences see images created by someone who was standing nearby when much of that history was happening. \nThe Garde Turns 100\nThe concert arrives at a particularly appropriate moment for the Garde Arts Center. \nThe Garde Theatre opened on September 22\, 1926\, originally presenting both movies and vaudeville. Built during the golden age of American movie palaces\, the theater became known for its elaborate Moroccan-inspired interior. (Wikipedia) \nWarner Bros. purchased the theater in 1929 as Hollywood moved into the era of talking pictures. Decades later\, changing moviegoing habits took their toll\, and the Garde closed in 1977. \nThe building might have disappeared altogether. \nIn 1985\, local community leaders created the nonprofit Garde Arts Center to save the historic theater and return it to use. The restoration preserved one of Connecticut’s few surviving movie palaces while transforming it into a modern performing arts venue. \nToday\, the Garde is again an anchor of downtown New London\, presenting concerts\, theater\, comedy\, film and community programs.
