Oct. 4\, Safe Futures brings families\, friends\, and community teams together for its annual walk during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. \nThe walk itself begins at 9 a.m.\, but this is more than a group making a lap around the park. \nBeginning at 8 a.m.\, Arnold Holm Jr. Memorial Park and the surrounding Waterford Duck Pond area become a small community gathering with a craft fair featuring local vendors\, basket raffles\, breakfast food trucks\, and activities surrounding the walk. \nThe goal is both symbolic and practical. \nSafe Futures hopes the event will raise at least $50\,000 to support free and confidential services for people in Southeastern Connecticut affected by domestic violence\, sexual assault\, stalking\, trafficking\, elder abuse\, and child abuse. \nThe Organization Behind the Walk\nSafe Futures is based in New London\, but its work extends throughout Southeastern Connecticut. \nFor someone experiencing abuse\, the organization can be a point of contact at virtually every stage of a crisis. \nSafe Futures operates a confidential hotline 24 hours a day\, 365 days a year. Its services include emergency shelter and safe-hotel placements\, transitional and supportive housing\, individual counseling\, court advocacy\, child and family advocacy\, assistance for victims working with law enforcement and prevention programs in area schools. \nThose services are provided free and confidentially. \nThat gives the Safe Walk a different significance than a typical Sunday-morning fundraiser. \nThe money raised doesn’t disappear into an abstract national campaign. It supports an organization working with people in this region who may need somewhere safe to sleep\, someone to accompany them through court\, help making a safety plan or simply a confidential person to call. \nWalk Together — or Build a Team\nAdults can register for $25\, while children under 18 and students participate free. \nWalkers can come individually\, gather family and friends or create fundraising teams. Participants receive fundraising tools through the event registration system\, and anyone who raises at least $100 receives a Safe Futures T-shirt. \nSame-day registration is available beginning at 8 a.m. \nThe morning’s craft fair also opens at 8\, giving people time to visit local vendors\, grab breakfast from the food trucks and enter the basket raffles before the walk gets underway. \nThen look for the purple balloon arch. \nThat’s the starting line\, positioned at the Waterford Public Library near the Duck Pond. Waterford Police will be on hand to assist pedestrians crossing the surrounding roads. \nWhy October Matters\nSafe Walk is deliberately held at the beginning of October. \nNational Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed throughout the month\, with organizations across Connecticut holding walks\, vigils and community events intended both to support survivors and to make information about domestic violence and available services more visible. \nSafe Futures expands its mission beyond domestic violence alone. Outer Light is introducing The Pioneer\, a Juicy IPA created for the fundraiser\, continuing a tradition of pairing the firefighters’ annual event with a special brew. \nA Fundraiser That’s Becoming a Groton Tradition\nThis is the fourth annual Groton Firefighters fundraiser at Outer Light. \nLast year’s event was built around The Can Man\, an Oktoberfest-style beer\, with the same basic idea: turn an afternoon at the brewery into a community fundraiser where people can stay for a beer\, eat\, listen to music and bring the kids rather than simply dropping off a donation. \nFor 2026\, The Pioneer takes over as the event’s signature beer. \nThe brewery and firefighters haven’t published detailed tasting notes for the new Juicy IPA\, leaving one of the day’s discoveries for the first pour. \nMore important is what happens to the money raised. \nOrganizers say 100 percent of fundraiser proceeds will benefit the Groton Firefighters’ Scholarship Fund and other benevolent causes supporting the community. \nThe scholarship fund provides the event with a purpose beyond the brewery. Neal was one of 12 acts selected for the 2024 competition at the Wolf Den\, advanced through the preliminary round and ultimately finished third in the finals. \nHis performance background also includes opening for country artists including Shenandoah\, Mark Chesnutt\, Craig Campbell\, Shooter Jennings and Neal McCoy. \nThat mix of country roots and rock influences should fit comfortably into an afternoon built around a brewery rather than a formal concert stage. \nTacos\, Raffles\, Games and a Bounce House\nThe fundraiser is designed to work for families as well as people coming specifically for the beer. \nTaqueria Cinco will be on hand serving food\, while the afternoon also includes raffles and prizes\, yard games and a bounce house provided by J&S Bounce House and Beyond. \nOuter Light will have its regular selection of beer and other beverages available in addition to The Pioneer. \nThat gives the event a loose\, drop-in structure. DESCRIPTION:Green-Tie Celebration rolls out the red carpet at Coogan Farm on Friday\, September 18\, as the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center turns its annual fundraiser into a night at the movies\, complete with costumes\, cocktails\, dinner bites\, an auction\, and an environmental hero whose work has changed the landscape of the farm itself. \nThis year’s theme is “The Nature Center Goes to the Movies\,” and guests are encouraged to arrive dressed as a favorite movie star or character. \n{Donate to the DPNC} \nThere will even be an award for the evening’s best costume. \nBut behind the movie-premiere fun is the serious purpose that has always driven Green-Tie. \nThis is the Nature Center’s primary annual fundraiser\, supporting its environmental education programs\, wildlife rehabilitation\, conservation work\, land stewardship\, and day-to-day operations. \nAnd in the middle of this year’s celebration\, the spotlight will turn to Lydia Pan\, recipient of the 2026 Maggie Jones Environmental Hero Award. \nGreen-Tie Has Never Been a Black-Tie Kind of Gala\nThe name tells you something about the personality of this fundraiser. \nGreen-Tie has traditionally rejected the idea that supporting conservation requires an evening of tuxedos and ballroom chandeliers. \nPast dress suggestions have ranged from wellies and wool to gowns and fascinators. \nThe celebration takes place outdoors at Coogan Farm\, under a large tent\, with the surrounding fields and preserved landscape serving as the setting. \nFor 2026\, DPNC is taking that playful tradition all the way to Hollywood. \nThe movie theme invites guests to dress as a favorite actor\, actress or movie character. The Nature Center is promising a “red carpet” celebration\, and the best-dressed guest gets an award. \nJames Bond? \nDorothy Gale? \nIndiana Jones? \nAudrey Hepburn? \nThe Dude? \nDPNC isn’t prescribing the movie or the decade. \nJust remember that you’re still going to a farm. \nLydia Pan Gets the Starring Role\nEvery good movie needs a lead. \nThis year’s belongs to Lydia Pan. \nPan will receive the Maggie Jones Environmental Hero Award for her extensive volunteer work at Coogan Farm\, particularly her efforts to remove invasive plants\, restore native habitat and teach other volunteers how to continue the work. \nThat last part is important. \nPan isn’t simply pulling weeds. \nShe has been leading volunteers in identifying invasive species\, understanding why they threaten native ecosystems and learning practical methods for controlling them. \nHer work at Coogan Farm has included tackling species familiar to anyone who has fought an overgrown Connecticut property: multiflora rose\, Japanese barberry\, Oriental bittersweet\, Japanese honeysuckle\, autumn olive and mugwort\, among others. \nShe has also led public educational programs at the farm devoted specifically to invasive-plant management. \nThe Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group recorded Pan leading a public Coogan Farm program that covered Connecticut’s invasive-plant regulations\, identification and management techniques and alternatives using native plants. \nShe has continued leading habitat restoration work and public programs at the property. \nRemoving an Invasive Plant Is Only Half the Job\nPulling something unwanted out of the ground can feel satisfying. \nEcological restoration is more complicated. \nInvasive plants can dominate an area so thoroughly that removing them simply creates open ground where the same species\, or another invasive\, can return. \nThat’s why restoration often involves a second step: helping native plants reestablish themselves. \nNative vegetation provides food and habitat for insects\, birds and other wildlife that evolved alongside it. \nPan’s work at Coogan Farm has focused on both sides of that equation\, reducing invasive plants while encouraging native alternatives. \nIt’s slow work. \nThere is no movie montage where an entire ecosystem gets restored in three minutes while inspirational music plays. \nThe real version takes seasons. \nAnd volunteers. \nLots of volunteers. \n{Donate to the DPNC} \nPan Has Been Teaching Those Volunteers How to Do It\nDPNC describes Pan’s contribution not only as eradicating invasive species and beautifying Coogan Farm but as directing and encouraging volunteers through hands-on learning. \nThat multiplies the effect of one knowledgeable person. \nA volunteer who learns to recognize Oriental bittersweet at Coogan Farm can recognize it at home. \nSomeone who learns why Japanese barberry can be damaging doesn’t stop knowing that when the volunteer session ends. \nPan has also worked with Wild Ones’ Mountain Laurel Chapter\, an organization devoted to native plants and natural landscaping. \nIn 2023\, the organization described her as president of the chapter and noted that she had already spent several years leading a Coogan Farm volunteer team working to eliminate or reduce invasive plants and replace them with native alternatives supporting pollinators and wildlife. \nThat makes the award especially appropriate. \nThe work combines conservation with education\, two things at the center of DPNC’s mission. \nThe Maggie Jones Award Is Still a Young Tradition\nThe Maggie Jones Environmental Hero Award was established in 2023 to recognize people and organizations demonstrating exceptional commitment to environmental protection\, education and community involvement. \nIts namesake is former DPNC Executive Director Maggie Jones\, whose leadership became inseparable from the modern history of the Nature Center. \nJones served as executive director for decades and helped guide major conservation projects\, including the effort to preserve Coogan Farm. \nWhen DPNC created the award in 2023\, there was an obvious choice for its first recipient. \nMaggie Jones. \nThe Mystic Garden Club received the honor in 2024. \nIn 2025\, it went to longtime conservation advocate and Groton Open Space Association founding member Sidney Van Zandt\, recognizing more than six decades of land-conservation work. \nPan now joins that group in 2026. \nThe Gala Is Taking Place on Land the Award’s Namesake Helped Save\nThere is a satisfying bit of symmetry here. \nGreen-Tie isn’t honoring environmental work in a rented ballroom. \nIt’s happening on land that exists as protected open space in significant part because of the conservation effort led by the organization hosting the party. \nDPNC acquired Coogan Farm in 2013 following a grassroots campaign to protect one of the last undeveloped pieces of farmland between downtown Mystic\, Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium. \nThe preserved property totals 45 acres. \nMore than 60 volunteers and 760 donors participated in the campaign\, along with the Trust for Public Land. \nThe acquisition extended a larger greenway while protecting habitat\, open space and portions of two watersheds. \nThe landscape also preserves centuries of Mystic history. \nFor a conservation fundraiser\, it’s difficult to imagine a more appropriate venue. \nCoogan Farm Goes Back Centuries\nLong before anyone called it Coogan Farm\, the land overlooking the Mystic River had a complicated history. \nIndigenous Pequot people used the area and surrounding estuaries before European colonization. \nFollowing the Pequot War\, land in the area was granted to English settlers\, including Captain John Gallup. \nAgriculture\, pasture and orchards became part of the landscape over subsequent centuries. \nThe Coogan name arrived much later. \nWalter C. Morgan purchased the property in 1902. His daughter\, Clara Avery Morgan\, inherited it and married Clarence A. Coogan in 1918\, eventually giving the property the name by which it is known today. \nThe preserved landscape still contains stone walls\, foundations\, meadows\, hedgerows and an heirloom orchard. \nThat combination of cultural and natural history is why DPNC describes it as both a Nature and Heritage Center. \n{Donate to the DPNC} \nThe Giving Garden Turned Preserved Land Into Working Land\nSaving Coogan Farm didn’t mean freezing it in time. \nOne of DPNC’s most visible projects there is the Craig Floyd Giving Garden. \nCreated after the property was acquired\, the garden was designed around two interconnected ideas: teaching sustainable agriculture and growing nutritious food for people who need it. \nIt began in 2014 through a partnership among DPNC\, the Robert G. Youngs Family Foundation and United Way. \nThe first growing season produced a little more than a ton of food. \nBy 2016\, the garden was producing more than six tons of vegetables in a single season. \nToday\, DPNC operates the garden as a permanent part of its mission. \nProduce is distributed to people experiencing food insecurity in New London County through the Gemma E.
