Foster established a small community airport on the property called Foster Field\, also known as Westone Airport. A hangar was designed by Stonington architect and engineer John W. Lincoln\, who is credited with sharing in the development of the Quonset hut. \nThe federal government closed the airport to public use after the United States entered World War II. Flying returned after the war when Henry R. Palmer Jr. operated Aero-Marine Service there\, offering commercial flights and flight training. \nThat venture lasted only a few years. \nOver the following decades\, the old hangar was put to work as a warehouse\, restaurant and manufacturing facility before eventually falling into disuse. \nFrom Airfield to Vineyard\nMichael Connery purchased the dormant property in 2001 and began its transformation into Saltwater Farm Vineyard. \nRather than demolish the old airport infrastructure\, the project preserved it. \nThe vintage hangar was restored and converted into the winery\, retaining its enormous timber trusses and original wood sheathing while adding a milled-aluminum exterior and modern winemaking facilities. Even the grassy landing strip was retained as part of the property. \nThe result doesn’t look quite like any other winery in southeastern Connecticut. The 2025 festival specifically supported the Amyloidosis Center. \nFor its fifth year\, FarmFest is directing its fundraising toward the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project. \nWhere the Money Goes in 2026\nAll proceeds from FarmFest 2026 will support the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project\, a grassroots community organization in Ng’ombe\, Zambia. \nThe organization began in 2005 with an effort to help seven women meeting in a one-room church. It later purchased a former bar and brothel and transformed the property into a community center and school. Today\, its work focuses on education\, skills training\, micro-enterprise\, and long-term support for women and children living in poverty. As a bandleader\, he has increasingly put his own musical ideas at the center\, releasing State of Emergency\, Blue Ridge\, and now Now in Time. \nAbout Now in Time\nReleased April 17\, 2026\, on Cellar Live\, Now in Time brings the same six musicians appearing in Old Lyme together for a 12-track album running just over an hour. \nThe record moves between Reeves’ original compositions and carefully selected standards rather than treating either as separate territory. The sextet takes on “On Green Dolphin Street” and “Alice in Wonderland\,” while also reaching beyond traditional jazz repertoire. \nThroughout the album\, Reeves’ bass doesn’t demand the spotlight. It guides the ensemble from underneath\, giving the other musicians room to move while quietly shaping where the music goes next. \nThat interplay is particularly suited to a live performance. Jazz changes when musicians respond to a room\, an audience and one another\, meaning the Side Door performances aren’t simply recreations of the record. A network of volunteers helps operate the festival\, handling parking\, admissions\, and other jobs needed to keep the weekend running. \nThe charitable component has grown alongside the music. \nOver the previous two years\, FarmFest organizers say the festival raised more than $8\,000 for the PACS2 Research Foundation and Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Amyloidosis Center. The 2025 festival specifically supported the Amyloidosis Center. \nFor its fifth year\, FarmFest is directing its fundraising toward the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project. \nWhere the Money Goes in 2026\nAll proceeds from FarmFest 2026 will support the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project\, a grassroots community organization in Ng’ombe\, Zambia. \nThe organization began in 2005 with an effort to help seven women meeting in a one-room church. It later purchased a former bar and brothel and transformed the property into a community center and school. Today\, its work focuses on education\, skills training\, micro-enterprise\, and long-term support for women and children living in poverty. (Chikumbuso Project) \nChikumbuso now operates a K–7 community school and provides scholarships that help students continue through high school and college. Its programs serve hundreds of children each year. \nThe organization’s work extends well beyond the classroom. Its vocational program has trained more than 300 young people in tailoring and small-business skills\, while its micro-enterprise programs help widows and single mothers earn income through handcrafted goods.
