SUMMARY:Pours with Purpose: Zara Manzur at Outer Light
DESCRIPTION:Pours with Purpose: Zara Manzur Foundation at Outer Light Brewing Company brings an afternoon of craft beer and community fundraising to Outer Light Brewing Company in Groton on Saturday\, August 29\, with proceeds supporting a local nonprofit helping students pursue careers in medicine and rehabilitation therapy. \nThe event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. as part of Outer Light’s recurring Pours with Purpose series\, which turns a visit to the brewery into an opportunity to support organizations working in the surrounding community. \nThis edition is dedicated to the Zara Manzur Foundation\, a nonprofit created in loving memory of Zara Jaclyn Manzur. \nRemembering Zara Through Opportunity\nThe Zara Manzur Foundation was established with a specific goal: helping local students afford the education necessary to enter medical and rehabilitation therapy fields. \nThe registered nonprofit provides financial assistance and educational resources to students pursuing those careers\, with the goal of awarding an annual scholarship that reduces some of the financial burden associated with higher education. \nIt’s a mission that transforms Zara’s memory into something tangible. \nA student gets help paying for school. That student moves closer to a career in medicine or rehabilitation. Eventually\, the person receiving that opportunity may spend a career helping other people. \nThe foundation describes its work simply as being done in loving memory of Zara Jaclyn Manzur. \nA Pint With a Larger Purpose\nOuter Light created Pours with Purpose as a recurring way to bring charitable organizations into the taproom and introduce their work to the brewery’s community. \nThat makes the format deliberately casual. \nInstead of attending a formal fundraising dinner or gala\, people can stop at the brewery\, order a beer\, spend time with friends and learn about the organization being supported. \nFor the August 29 edition\, that organization is the Zara Manzur Foundation. \nIt’s an easy Saturday afternoon out\, but the reason for gathering reaches well beyond the taproom. \nA Groton Brewery Built Around Community\nOuter Light Brewing Company opened in Groton in 2015 and has developed into a regular gathering place for community events\, fundraisers and casual weekend get-togethers. \nIts coastal Connecticut identity even carries into the beer. \nThe brewery’s flagship lineup includes Lonesome Boatman Amber Ale\, Subduction IPA\, Morning Light Lager and the hazy Juicy Bull$#!t New England IPA. \nThe taproom has an industrial brewery atmosphere\, with guests able to see portions of the production operation while enjoying their drinks. \nOuter Light also regularly uses its space for community cookouts\, special releases and charitable events like Pours with Purpose. \nSpend Saturday Supporting a Local Scholarship\nThere’s no complicated itinerary here. \nCome to Outer Light. \nHave a drink. \nSpend some time with people from the community. \nAnd help an organization working to make the cost of education a little less daunting for a local student preparing for a career devoted to helping others. \nFor the Zara Manzur Foundation\, that’s the purpose behind the pour. \nEvent Details\nEvent: Pours with Purpose: Zara Manzur Foundation\nDate: Saturday\, August 29\, 2026\nTime: 2–6 p.m.\nLocation: Outer Light Brewing Company\nAddress: 266 Bridge Street\, Groton\, CT 06340\nBeneficiary: Zara Manzur Foundation\nFoundation Mission: Providing financial assistance and educational resources to local students entering medical or rehabilitation therapy fields\nOrganization: Registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit\nSeries: Pours with Purpose \nPours with Purpose: Zara Manzur Foundation brings the community together at Outer Light Brewing Company while supporting scholarships and educational assistance for local students pursuing careers in medicine and rehabilitation therapy. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown. \n

SUMMARY:Ashawaug Farm Pop Up at Grey Sail Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Ashawaug Farm Pop Up at Grey Sail Brewing brings an Indigenous-owned Rhode Island farm to Westerly on Saturday\, August 29\, for an afternoon combining locally grown produce\, art\, craft drinks\, and live music. \nDawn and Cassius Spears of Ashawaug Farm will set up at the Grey Sail Taproom from 3 to 6 p.m.\, allowing visitors to meet the people behind the farm\, shop for local goods and learn a little more about the connection between what’s growing in Rhode Island soil and what’s eventually poured into a glass. \nThe event is part of something larger\, too. Grey Sail is participating in Zero Foodprint’s Dirty Drinks campaign\, a weeklong effort connecting the beverages people enjoy with the farms and soil that ultimately make them possible. \nMeet Ashawaug Farm\nAshawaug Farm is a six-acre\, Indigenous-owned and family-run farm in Ashaway operated by Dawn and Cassius Spears with help from their children\, grandchildren\, and extended community. \nBoth Dawn and Cassius are members of the Narragansett Tribe. \nThe farm grows organically cultivated crops in Narragansett silt loam soil alongside woodlands where fruits and herbs grow naturally. Rather than concentrating solely on conventional produce\, Ashawaug places particular emphasis on traditional\, heirloom and culturally significant crops. \nIts farmstand and farmers market offerings have included more than 30 varieties of heirloom tomatoes along with crops connected to Indigenous food traditions. \nFor the Spears family\, growing food is also a way of preserving knowledge. \nArt\, Agriculture and Narragansett Foodways\nAshawaug Farm is also home to the Ashawaug Project\, an educational initiative combining agriculture and art to share knowledge of Narragansett foodways. \nThe project explores Indigenous agriculture while working to support community health\, cultural revitalization and food sovereignty. \nCassius Spears is an agricultural expert and cultural educator whose work focuses on restoring and advancing Indigenous agricultural knowledge. He also works to strengthen connections among Indigenous agricultural communities and currently serves as president of the Rhode Island Association of Conservation Districts. \nDawn Spears approaches the land from another direction as well. \nShe’s a multimedia artist whose work incorporates cultural symbolism and the colors and forms of the natural world. Spears also works to increase the visibility of Indigenous artists and serves as director of the Northeast Indigenous Agriculture and Arts Alliance. \nThat combination explains why Saturday’s gathering is billed as an art and produce pop-up rather than simply a small farmers market. \nWhat’s a Dirty Drink?\nGrey Sail’s involvement in the Zero Foodprint Dirty Drinks campaign gives the afternoon another layer. \nThe national campaign runs from August 24 through 30 and asks participating bars\, breweries and other businesses to draw attention to something that’s easy to overlook when ordering a drink: agriculture starts beneath your feet. \nGrains\, fruits\, herbs and countless other ingredients depend on farms and healthy soil long before they reach a brewer\, distiller or bartender. \nFor its collaboration with Ashawaug Farm\, Grey Sail is serving a special Dirty Drinks creation called the Ashawaug Bees Knees. \nVisitors can try the drink while meeting Dawn and Cassius and learning about the farm behind the collaboration. \nFrom a Macaroni Factory to a Brewery\nGrey Sail has its own connection to local history. \nJennifer and Alan Brinton had considered opening a brewery for more than 15 years before finally moving forward with the idea in 2010. \nThey found their home in a Canal Street building constructed in the late 1920s as the Westerly Macaroni Factory. The property later served the U.S. Postal Service and NAPA Auto Parts before the Brintons purchased it. \nGrey Sail moved into the building in April 2011. \nSeven months later\, on Nov. 11\, 2011\, grain was moving through the old macaroni factory again\, this time for the first batch of Grey Sail’s Flagship Ale. \nThe brewery has since become one of Westerly’s best-known craft beverage producers\, with beers including Captain’s Daughter Double IPA\, Pour Judgement IPA and Pour Judgement Pils. \nStay for the Music\nThe farm pop-up doesn’t end when you’ve picked out some produce. \nGrey Sail has live music scheduled at the Taproom beginning at 4 p.m.\, one hour after Ashawaug Farm arrives. \nBenjamin Quinn performs from 4 to 7 p.m.\, meaning the music overlaps with the final two hours of the pop-up and continues for another hour afterward. \nThe Taproom is Grey Sail’s outdoor venue\, serving beer alongside wine\, cocktails and nonalcoholic options. \nSo Saturday afternoon can easily turn into more than a quick stop. \nMeet the farmers. Browse the produce and artwork. Try the Ashawaug Bees Knees. Then grab a drink and stick around for the music. \nA Short Trip From Farm to Taproom\nAshawaug Farm sits in Ashaway. \nGrey Sail is in Westerly. \nThey’re neighboring communities\, but Saturday’s collaboration connects them in a different way. \nOne is growing food while preserving and sharing Indigenous agricultural knowledge. The other is turning agricultural ingredients into something poured into a glass. \nFor three hours Saturday afternoon\, those two ends of the process meet at the same place. \nAnd the people tending the soil will be there to tell their side of the story. \nEvent Details\nEvent: Ashawaug Farm Pop Up\nDate: Saturday\, August 29\, 2026\nTime: 3–6 p.m.\nLocation: Grey Sail Taproom\nAddress: 65 Canal Street\, Westerly\, RI 02891\nFeatured Farm: Ashawaug Farm\nFarmers: Dawn and Cassius Spears\nPop-Up: Local produce\, goods and art\nSpecial Drink: Ashawaug Bees Knees\nCampaign: Zero Foodprint’s Dirty Drinks\nLive Music: Benjamin Quinn\nLive Music Time: 4–7 p.m.\nTaproom Beverages: Beer\, wine\, cocktails and nonalcoholic options \nAshawaug Farm Pop Up brings Dawn and Cassius Spears to Grey Sail Taproom for an afternoon of Indigenous agriculture\, local produce and art\, a special Ashawaug Bees Knees drink and live music from Benjamin Quinn. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nAshawaug Farm\nhttps://www.ashawaugproject.com/ \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown. \n
