SUMMARY:Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways at Mystic Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways at Mystic Museum of Art explores the history of textiles in southeastern Connecticut\, tracing how fabrics\, fashion\, and craftsmanship have shaped the region from the precolonial era through the present day. On view from June 26 through October 11\, 2026\, the exhibition brings together historic artifacts and contemporary works to examine how textiles reflect labor\, immigration\, cultural identity\, and changing ideas of luxury. \nInspired by southeastern Connecticut’s once-thriving velvet industry\, the exhibition features a collaboration between Mystic Museum of Art\, Historic Stonington\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\, Mystic Seaport Museum\, and the Connecticut Region of the Studio Art Quilt Associates. Visitors will encounter an extensive collection of beadwork\, embroidery\, quilts\, velvet\, fashion\, and textile art drawn from partner institutions and the museum’s own collection. \nThe exhibition also highlights contemporary fashion designers with Connecticut connections\, including Xarea Lockhart\, Toriana Sauro\, Christian Siriano\, and Peter Som. Their work connects the region’s textile heritage with modern fashion\, demonstrating how clothing and material culture continue to influence art\, identity\, and design. Throughout the exhibition\, the museum will present lectures\, artist conversations\, and hands-on workshops that further explore these themes. \nExhibition Details\n\nExhibition: Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\nVenue: Mystic Museum of Art\nDates: June 26-October 11\, 2026\nLocation: Mystic\, CT\n\nExhibition Highlights\nVisitors will experience: \n\ns\nWorks from Mystic Museum of Art’s permanent collection\nLoans from regional museums and organizations\n\nFeatured Partners\nThe exhibition includes contributions from: \n\nHistoric Stonington\nMashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\nMystic Seaport Museum\nStudio Art Quilt Associates\, Connecticut Region\n\nFeatured Designers\nThe exhibition showcases work by designers with Connecticut ties\, including: \n\nXarea Lockhart\nToriana Sauro\nChristian Siriano\nPeter Som\n\nAdmission\n\nGeneral Admission: $12\nNew London County residents: $10\nSeniors (65+): $10\nStudents with valid ID: $10\nFree:\n\nMystic Museum of Art members\nYouth ages 17 and under\nMilitary personnel and veterans\n\n\n\nExhibition Programs\nPublic programs are held on select Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. \nTuesday\, July 7\nMystic Mudlarking: The River and the Rossie Velvet Mill \n\nGuest speaker: Mary Hendrickson\n\nTuesday\, July 21\nImmigration and Industry \n\nGuest speaker: Chelsea Mitchell\, Library Director & Collections Manager\, Historic Stonington\n\nTuesday\, September 1\nConversation with Alana Ryder and Emerging Designers \nFeaturing: \n\nAlana Ryder\nXarea Lockhart\nToriana Sauro\n\nWorkshops\nAll workshops take place in KTJ Studios. \nSaturday\, September 19\nFrom Textile to Art: Felt Collage Workshop \nSaturday\, September 26\nIntroduction to Sewing Workshop \n\nFeatured designer: Toriana Sauro\n\nSaturday\, October 10\nRelief Printing on Silk Scarf Workshop \nWhy Visit\nLuxe CT examines how textiles have connected communities across centuries while reflecting the region’s history of manufacturing\, immigration\, craftsmanship\, and artistic innovation. SUMMARY:Mystic Ukulele Strummers
DESCRIPTION:Mystic Ukulele Strummers brings together music lovers of all skill levels for weekly ukulele gatherings at Union Baptist Church in Mystic. Designed to be welcoming\, relaxed\, and community-focused\, the group invites beginners\, longtime players\, and curious first-timers alike to spend an evening strumming familiar songs and learning together in a casual social atmosphere. \nThe gatherings focus less on formal music instruction and more on participation\, encouragement\, and shared enjoyment of music. Players can practice chords\, improve rhythm\, learn new songs\, or simply join in for the fun of playing alongside others. Because the ukulele is approachable and easy to pick up\, the sessions tend to attract a wide mix of ages and experience levels\, creating an environment where newcomers don’t feel intimidated. \nWhat makes the Mystic Ukulele Strummers stand out is the sense of community built around the music itself. The group offers a low-pressure way for people to connect\, laugh\, and unplug for a while\, whether they are serious musicians or someone dusting off a ukulele for the first time in years. For locals looking for a creative weekly tradition\, it’s the kind of simple community gathering that feels increasingly rare and valuable. \n

SUMMARY:Polymer Clay Fashion Jewelry Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Polymer Clay Fashion Jewelry Making Workshop turns the jewelry people wear into the artwork they make Saturday\, September 12\, at Mystic Museum of Art. \nLed by artist-educator Carol Mann\, the three-hour hands-on workshop introduces participants to polymer clay through techniques including gilding\, imprinting\, stamping\, inclusions\, and cane making. Along the way\, students will experiment with color\, pattern\, and texture before learning the finishing techniques and jewelry findings needed to turn their creations into wearable pieces. \nThe workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is part of the programming surrounding MMoA’s summer exhibition\, LUXE CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways. \nPolymer Clay Is Not the Clay You Remember From Art Class\nDespite the name\, polymer clay isn’t geological clay dug from the earth. \nIt’s a moldable synthetic material that remains workable until it is cured with heat. That makes it particularly useful for small-scale decorative work. Artists can roll it\, layer it\, texture it\, stamp it and combine colors before curing the finished design. \nFor jewelry makers\, that flexibility opens up an enormous range of possibilities. \nA piece can mimic stone or other materials. Colors can be layered into patterns that continue through the clay. Metallic elements can be applied to surfaces. Texture can be pressed directly into a piece. Different components can then become earrings\, pendants\, beads or other wearable objects. \nSaturday’s workshop is designed to introduce several of those approaches rather than concentrate on a single project. \nFrom Gilding to Millefleur Canes\nAmong the techniques Mann will introduce is gilding\, which can give polymer clay a metallic surface or accent. \nParticipants will also work with inclusions\, adding other materials to clay to change its visual appearance\, and experiment with imprinting and stamping to create surface textures and patterns. \nOne of the more distinctive techniques is cane making. \nA polymer-clay cane is constructed so a design runs through the length of a cylinder or other shape. When thin slices are cut from it\, the pattern appears repeatedly. \nThe concept has a long decorative-art relative in millefiori glass\, the centuries-old technique associated particularly with Venetian glassmaking in which patterned glass rods are sliced to reveal repeated designs. \nPolymer clay allows artists to explore a similar principle without a glass furnace. \nThe museum describes the workshop as including “millefleur canes\,” giving participants an opportunity to see how a complex-looking decorative pattern can actually be built from relatively simple components. \nThe Final Step Turns Art Into Something Wearable\nCreating the decorative clay is only part of the process. \nMann will also cover basic finishing and the use of jewelry findings\, the small functional components that allow an artistic object to become jewelry. \nDepending on the piece\, findings can include hooks\, posts\, jump rings\, clasps\, pins and other hardware connecting decorative elements to something that can actually be worn. \nThat’s an important distinction in a workshop connected to an exhibition about textiles and fashion. \nThe finished work isn’t simply a miniature sculpture. \nIt becomes part of what someone wears. \nThe Workshop Comes Directly Out of LUXE CT\nThe timing isn’t accidental. \nLUXE CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways is Mystic Museum of Art’s major summer 2026 exhibition\, running from June 26 through October 11. \nThe exhibition looks at textiles in Connecticut from the precolonial period through contemporary fashion\, using southeastern Connecticut’s once-significant velvet industry as one of its starting points. \nBut the show isn’t simply about fabric. \nIt’s about what people make\, how they make it\, who performs the labor and how materials can communicate wealth\, identity\, culture and changing ideas about luxury. \nObjects in the exhibition include beadwork\, embroidery\, quilts\, velvet and fashion\, combining historical material with contemporary work. \nMMoA assembled the exhibition in partnership with Historic Stonington\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\, Mystic Seaport Museum and members of Studio Art Quilt Associates’ Connecticut Region. \nFrom Southeastern Connecticut Mills to Contemporary Fashion\nOne of the strengths of LUXE CT is the distance it covers. \nTextiles that might once have been understood primarily as household objects or industrial products are placed in conversation with contemporary fashion. \nThat gives the exhibition room to explore something as seemingly simple as a piece of fabric from several directions. \nWho made it? \nWhere did the material come from? \nWas it produced by hand or in a mill? \nWas it utilitarian or luxurious? \nWhat did the design communicate about the person or community that created it? \nAnd who decided it was valuable? \nThose questions become particularly interesting in southeastern Connecticut\, where textile production once provided jobs to generations of workers and immigrant families. \nThe exhibition connects those histories of labor and industrial production with cultural traditions that long predate the mills. \nConnecticut Fashion Doesn’t End With the Mills\nThe exhibition then carries the story into contemporary fashion through designers with Connecticut connections. \nAmong them is Christian Siriano\, who grew up in nearby Annapolis\, Maryland\, attended the American InterContinental University in London and became nationally known after winning Project Runway in 2008. His fashion house has since dressed figures ranging from actors and musicians to political leaders\, while Siriano has become particularly known for challenging the fashion industry’s restrictive approach to body size and inclusivity. \nAlso represented is New York-based designer Peter Som\, whose Connecticut connections are part of the exhibition’s contemporary story and whose career has included his own collections as well as work across fashion\, lifestyle and design. \nThe exhibition also features emerging designers Xarea Lockhart and Toriana Sauro\, giving visitors a look at how a new generation is thinking about clothing\, materials and identity. \nTogether\, the historic and contemporary pieces make the case that fashion doesn’t sit apart from history. \nIt records it. \nA Series of Workshops Turns the Exhibition Into a Studio\nThe polymer clay session is part of a larger series of LUXE CT-inspired workshops running alongside the exhibition. \nOn September 19\, the museum turns to felt collage. \nSeptember 26 brings an introduction to sewing workshop with featured designer Toriana Sauro. \nYoung artists ages 10 to 14 can explore embroidery September 27. \nOctober workshops move into marbled textile sketchbook covers\, relief printing on silk scarves and linocut printing on T-shirts. \nThe idea is a useful one: after seeing what generations of artists\, craftspeople\, textile workers and designers have done with materials\, visitors can go upstairs to the studio and start manipulating materials themselves. \nSaturday’s jewelry workshop provides one of the most approachable entry points. \nNo kiln\, metalsmithing bench or previous jewelry-making career is required. \nCarol Mann Leads the Workshop\nArtist educator Carol Mann is a familiar instructor within Mystic Museum of Art’s studio program. \nHer teaching at MMoA extends across media rather than being confined to jewelry. She leads courses in watercolor and mixed-media work and teaches younger artists as well\, including classes that combine clay\, fiber\, paper and wax. \nThat teaching background is useful for a workshop built around experimentation. \nParticipants aren’t simply following instructions to reproduce one identical piece. The museum’s description emphasizes learning techniques and then combining color\, texture and pattern into distinctive designs. \nThe goal is individual work. \nIf everyone leaves with exactly the same jewelry\, something has probably gone wrong. \nThe Material Is Supplied\, But There’s an Additional Fee\nParticipants don’t need to arrive with a jewelry-making toolbox. \nMystic Museum of Art says all materials are supplied for the workshop. \nThere is\, however\, an additional $8 materials fee\, payable directly to the instructor. That’s separate from registration\, which costs $60 for museum members and $70 for nonmembers. \nIt’s worth accounting for that when deciding whether to register: the actual total is $68 for members or $78 for nonmembers once the materials fee is included. \nThe workshop is listed as an adult studio program and runs for three hours. \nYou Can See the Exhibition That Inspired It\nThere’s also an opportunity to connect the studio experience directly to its source material. \nLUXE CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways remains on view through October 11. \nSpecial exhibition admission is $12 general admission and $10 for New London County residents\, seniors 65 and older and students with ID. Admission is free for Mystic Museum of Art members\, visitors 17 and younger and military members and veterans. \nThat means someone coming for Saturday’s workshop can approach the day from both directions. \nLook at how other people have transformed fabric\, thread\, beads and other materials into objects carrying cultural and personal meaning. \nThen sit down at a table and start making something. \nThe scale may be smaller. \nThe basic impulse isn’t very different. \nDetails\nEvent: Polymer Clay Fashion Jewelry Making Workshop: LUXE CT-Inspired Studio Workshop\nDate: Saturday\, September 12\, 2026\nTime: 10 a.m.–1 p.m.\nInstructor: Artist educator Carol Mann\nVenue: Mystic Museum of Art\nAddress: 9 Water Street\, Mystic\, CT 06355\nProgram: Adult studio workshop / mixed media / jewelry making\nMember Registration: $60\nNonmember Registration: $70\nMaterials Fee: Additional $8\, payable to the instructor\nMaterials: All materials are supplied\nTechniques: Gilding\, inclusions\, imprinting\, stamping\, cane making\, color and texture work\, finishing and jewelry findings\nRelated Exhibition: LUXE CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\, on view through October 11\nMuseum Phone: 860-536-7601 \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nTo register for the workshop\, click the Event Registration link below. \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.

SUMMARY:Donuts & Design at the Mystic Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Donuts & Design brings artmaking\, donuts\, coffee\, and a little end-of-summer fun to the museum’s riverfront patio on Sunday\, September 13. The 90-minute family program runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon and is designed for both families already familiar with the museum and newcomers looking for an easy way to introduce children to art. \nThe morning combines hands-on creative activities with time to explore the museum. Families can make art together\, use bubbles and chalk\, enjoy donuts and coffee\, and visit Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\, Mystic Museum of Art’s summer exhibition exploring Connecticut’s long relationship with textiles\, craftsmanship\, and fashion. \nThe event takes place at Mystic Museum of Art at 9 Water Street in downtown Mystic. Rather than setting up a formal children’s class where adults watch from the sidelines\, Donuts & Design is being presented as a family morning\, with creative activities meant to be shared by children and the adults who bring them. \nAdmission is priced per family rather than per person: $25 for Mystic Museum of Art member families and $35 for nonmember families. Space is limited and advance registration is encouraged. \nDonuts\, Coffee and Artmaking by the Mystic River\nThe morning starts with two things that should make getting the family out of the house on a Sunday a little easier: donuts and coffee. \nDonuts for the event come from Deviant Donuts\, the Mystic shop known for elaborate small-batch creations and frequently changing specialty flavors. Deviant began in 2017 as a pop-up inside its sister business\, Vault Coffee\, before developing into its own shop at Olde Mistick Village. The bakery makes its fillings\, glazes and garnishes by hand and has built its menu around rotating flavors rather than a fixed lineup of conventional donuts. \nCoffee comes from Wakin’ Up Waggin’\, a Pawcatuck-based mobile coffee and kombucha business founded by Tim and Erika Lebling. The mobile operation serves organic nitro coffee\, kombucha and other nonalcoholic drinks and has become a familiar sight at southeastern Connecticut events\, including the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. \nOnce everyone is sufficiently caffeinated and sugared\, the art begins. \nMystic Museum of Art staff and educators will lead creative activities\, while families will also have access to bubbles\, chalk and opportunities to spend time together on the museum grounds. The museum specifically welcomes its summer camp families and workshop participants back for the morning but has made clear that newcomers are invited as well. \nA Family Introduction to Mystic Museum of Art\nDonuts & Design also offers families who haven’t visited Mystic Museum of Art an informal introduction to what happens there beyond its gallery exhibitions. \nArt education is a significant part of the museum’s work. Its programming ranges from classes and camps to family programs\, school visits and hands-on studio experiences for children\, teens and adults. The museum describes its broader mission as fostering the creation\, understanding\, appreciation and enjoyment of art\, with education programs intended to encourage creativity\, observation and critical thinking. \nThat makes Donuts & Design somewhat different from simply taking children through an art museum. \nKids get something to do with their hands. Parents and caregivers can participate rather than spending the morning reminding everyone not to touch anything. And the museum’s location along the Mystic River gives families room to move between art\, food and outdoor activities during the 90-minute program. \nExplore Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\nFamilies can also explore Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\, the museum’s major summer exhibition\, which remains on view through October 11. \nThe exhibition looks at Connecticut’s textile history from the precolonial period through contemporary fashion\, with particular attention paid to southeastern Connecticut’s once-important velvet industry. \nHistoric and contemporary beadwork\, embroidery\, quilts\, velvet and fashion are used to tell stories about the people behind the objects\, including labor\, immigration\, cultural identity and the changing meaning of luxury. \nThe exhibition was developed with Historic Stonington\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\, Mystic Seaport Museum and the Connecticut Region of Studio Art Quilt Associates. It also brings the story into the present through work by contemporary fashion designers with Connecticut connections\, including Christian Siriano\, Peter Som\, Xarea Lockhart and Toriana Sauro. \nFor families attending Donuts & Design\, that creates a natural bridge between making something themselves and then seeing how materials\, design and craft are used by working artists and designers. \nMore Than a Century of Art in Mystic\nMystic Museum of Art’s roots stretch back well before the current museum took its name. \nThe institution grew from the Mystic Art Colony and Mystic Art Association\, founded in 1913 by artists who had been drawn to Mystic and the surrounding shoreline. The organization later operated as the Mystic Arts Center before adopting the Mystic Museum of Art name in 2016. \nToday\, the museum occupies a riverfront location just west of the Mystic River Bascule Bridge\, a short walk from the center of downtown Mystic. Along with exhibitions\, its calendar includes studio classes\, children’s programming\, workshops\, gallery talks and community events. \nDonuts & Design fits neatly into that community side of the museum: less of a formal museum visit\, more of a Sunday morning where a child can draw\, make something\, wander through a gallery and leave with a little evidence of the morning on their hands. \nDonuts & Design Details\nEvent: Donuts & Design: A Family Morning at Mystic Museum of Art\nDate: Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\nTime: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.\nLocation: Mystic Museum of Art\nAddress: 9 Water Street\, Mystic\, CT 06355\nAdmission: $25 per member family; $35 per nonmember family\nRegistration: Advance registration is recommended; space is limited\nFood & Drink: Donuts from Deviant Donuts and coffee from Wakin’ Up Waggin’\nActivities: Family artmaking\, creative activities\, coloring\, bubbles\, chalk and more\nAlso Included: Access to Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\nWho Can Attend: Families\, including newcomers as well as museum members\, previous workshop participants and summer camp families\nEvent Contact: Mystic Museum of Art\, 860-536-7601 \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nTo purchase tickets\, click the Event Ticketing link below. \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.

SUMMARY:Seasonal Shifts Opens a New Velvet Mill Artists Group Show in Stonington
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal Shifts brings the work of artists based at Stonington’s Velvet Mill together for a new group exhibition opening Thursday\, September 17\, with an evening reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. \nThe exhibition will be installed in the Velvet Mill Gallery\, upstairs from the building’s main entrance near Zest Fresh Pastry\, and will remain on view through the holiday season. \nThat extended run makes the opening party more than a one-night event. It’s the introduction to a fall and early-winter exhibition showcasing artists who work inside the enormous former textile mill\, a building that has gradually developed into one of southeastern Connecticut’s more unusual creative communities. \nOne Building\, Many Artists\nThe Velvet Mill can be confusing if you’ve never explored it. \nIt isn’t one gallery. \nIt’s an enormous former industrial building filled with individual studios\, galleries\, shops\, makers\, restaurants and other small businesses. Some artists maintain spaces that function as both working studios and miniature galleries\, while others primarily use their rooms to make art. \nSeasonal Shifts pulls members of that scattered community into a shared exhibition. \nInstead of opening one studio door at a time\, visitors can see work by multiple Velvet Mill artists together in the Mill’s upstairs gallery. \nThe group format is particularly useful in a place like this. Artists working only a corridor or staircase apart can have dramatically different approaches\, materials and subjects. \nThe Theme Is Right in the Title\nSeasonal Shifts arrives almost exactly as summer turns to fall. \nThe autumnal equinox follows just days after the opening\, but “seasonal shifts” offers artists considerably more room than simply painting fall foliage. \nA shift can be environmental. \nIt can be emotional. \nIt can involve light\, color\, weather\, aging\, growth\, loss or transition. \nAnd an exhibition that remains up through the holidays will itself live through a substantial seasonal shift. Visitors seeing it in September will encounter the work in a different context than someone walking into the gallery in December. \nThe promotional artwork\, by Dennis Caruso\, reinforces that freedom of interpretation with an abstract composition of loosely defined forms\, energetic black marks and areas of white\, cream\, blue\, pink and muted yellow. \nIt’s not a postcard version of autumn. \nThat’s probably the point. \nThe Velvet Mill Has Become an Arts Destination Almost by Accident\nThe setting is part of the story. \nThe enormous brick complex at 22 Bayview Avenue was built in the late 19th century and became associated with the American Velvet Company\, which manufactured textiles in Stonington for generations. \nWhen industrial production ended\, the question facing the property was familiar throughout New England: what do you do with a huge old factory that no longer has a factory inside it? \nIn Stonington\, part of the answer became art. \nLarge industrial windows\, high ceilings and adaptable rooms made the former manufacturing spaces particularly suitable for studios. \nArtists moved in. \nThen makers\, galleries and small retailers followed. \nToday you can walk through the Mill and encounter painters and photographers alongside letterpress printing\, coastal art\, handmade goods\, antiques\, furniture\, food\, a brewery and other independent businesses. \nThe building still feels industrial. \nIt just produces very different things now. \nThere Are Galleries Hidden Throughout the Building\nThe artists’ group show also offers an introduction to a larger visual-arts scene inside the Mill. \nThere are individual artist studios as well as dedicated gallery spaces scattered throughout the complex. \nDennis Sirrine Gallery showcases the work of longtime Velvet Mill painter Dennis Sirrine. \nCoastal Arts Gallery & Studio #85 concentrates on coastal and New England-inspired work\, including original art\, prints and smaller gift pieces. \nStudio 87 – Nautical by Nature similarly draws inspiration from the region’s maritime environment. \nAllgood Studios and Gallery takes a less conventional approach\, combining gallery and creative studio space with an arcade component. \nShuttle Press & Bindery expands the definition further. Its Studio 77 is a working letterpress shop and bookbindery\, where traditional printing and bookmaking techniques become part of the Mill’s broader maker culture. \nThe result is less like visiting a conventional museum complex and more like exploring an arts neighborhood that happens to be contained inside one very large building. \nAn Opening Party Changes the Experience\nThe September 17 opening provides something that visiting the exhibition later won’t. \nThe artists are part of the event. \nOpening receptions are useful precisely because gallery exhibitions can otherwise separate the finished work from the person who made it. \nAt a group opening\, viewers have the opportunity to encounter multiple artists\, ask questions and hear how individual pieces relate to the exhibition’s theme. \nFor people who enjoy art but feel they don’t know enough to talk about it\, there really isn’t a prerequisite. \nFind something that stops you. \nLook at it. \nAsk the artist about it. \nThat’s enough. \nMake Sure You Head Upstairs\nThe Velvet Mill is big enough that knowing where you’re going matters. \nThe Velvet Mill Gallery is upstairs from the main entrance near Zest Fresh Pastry. \nVisitors entering the building for the first time shouldn’t assume the exhibition is in one of the retail galleries along the main corridors. \nThe opening begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday\, September 17. \nAfter opening night\, Seasonal Shifts remains on view through the holidays\, giving visitors several months to catch the exhibition even if they can’t attend the reception. \nA Particularly Busy September at the Mill\nThe opening also arrives during an active stretch at the Velvet Mill. \nTwo days later\, on September 19 and 20\, participating businesses throughout the building will hold the End-of-Season Indoor Sidewalk Sale\, moving sale and clearance merchandise into the hallways outside their shops. \nSaturday mornings also bring the Stonington Village Farmers Market into the Mill. \nThat makes Seasonal Shifts easy to combine with a larger visit. \nSomeone coming for the art can end up exploring shops. \nSomeone coming for the market can discover a gallery upstairs. \nSomeone arriving for lunch can find an exhibition they didn’t know was there. \nThat’s one of the advantages of putting art in a building where people are already doing other things. \nYou don’t necessarily have to decide you’re going to an art gallery. \nSometimes you just walk upstairs. \nDetails\nExhibition: Seasonal Shifts\nEvent: Opening Party\nDate: Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\nTime: 5:30 p.m.\nPresented By: Velvet Mill Artists\nVenue: The Velvet Mill\nGallery: Velvet Mill Gallery\nAddress: 22 Bayview Avenue\, Stonington\, CT 06378\nLocation in Building: Upstairs from the main entrance near Zest Fresh Pastry\nAdmission: No admission charge is indicated for the opening or exhibition\nFormat: Group exhibition featuring Velvet Mill artists\nExhibition Run: September 17 through the holiday season\nPoster Artwork: Dennis Caruso\nOpening Reception: Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.

SUMMARY:Westerly Performing Arts Tour Takes Young Performers Behind the Scenes at Three Downtown Arts Institutions
DESCRIPTION:The Westerly Performing Arts Tour gives young singers\, musicians and actors something they don’t normally get from sitting in the audience: a look behind the curtain at three of Westerly’s major performing arts organizations and a chance to find out how they can become part of them. \nThe guided walking tour begins beneath the marquee at The UNITED Theatre at 10 a.m. Saturday\, September 19\, before heading through downtown to the Granite Theatre and George Kent Performance Hall\, home of The Chorus of Westerly. \nOver roughly 90 minutes\, participants will meet artists and educators\, explore performance spaces\, learn about training programs and discover opportunities to sing\, act\, play an instrument or otherwise become involved in Westerly’s performing arts community. \nFor a young person who knows they want to perform but doesn’t know where to begin\, that’s really the point of the morning. \nThree Stops\, Three Different Ways Onto a Stage\nThe tour isn’t simply a walk through three interesting buildings. \nEach stop represents a different part of the performing arts. \nAt The UNITED\, the focus includes music education and the many ways musicians can develop their skills. \nAt the Granite Theatre\, participants actually step onto the stage while learning about acting\, theatrical training and performance. \nAt The Chorus of Westerly\, the tour moves into vocal and ensemble training inside Kent Hall. \nTogether\, the three organizations offer a surprisingly broad introduction to what’s available to a young performer within a relatively small section of downtown Westerly. \nAnd participants will hear directly from the people who teach and create the work rather than simply picking up three brochures. \nIt Starts Under The UNITED Marquee\nThe first meeting point is one of downtown Westerly’s most recognizable landmarks: the marquee at The UNITED Theatre at 5 Canal Street. \nFrom there\, participants head behind the scenes. \nThe UNITED today is considerably more than a movie theater. \nIts modern arts complex contains a 750-capacity flexible performance space\, three cinemas\, an event and gallery space and a dedicated music school. \nThe building hosts concerts\, theater\, dance\, comedy\, films\, lectures and other programming while maintaining an increasingly substantial educational operation. \nYoung visitors on Saturday’s tour will get a closer look at that educational side. \nThe UNITED Music School Is a Working Training Center\nThe UNITED Music School offers instruction and performance opportunities across a range of instruments\, ages and ability levels. \nThe idea isn’t simply to teach someone how to play scales in a practice room. \nStudents can develop through lessons and ensembles while being conneGcted to an active performing arts organization where musicians are regularly rehearsing\, recording and appearing onstage. \nThe UNITED also extends its education programs beyond traditional instrumental instruction. \nIts broader arts programming has included songwriting\, voice\, photography\, video\, visual arts\, film and podcasting\, along with after-school programming for local students. \nThe tour gives prospective students a chance to see where that work happens and ask the people involved what participating actually looks like. \nThe Building Has Been Training Entertainers for a Century\, in a Way\nThere’s another reason the UNITED is an appropriate place to begin. \nIn 1926\, the original United Theatre opened as a vaudeville house. \nThat means the building turns 100 years old in 2026. \nVaudeville theaters were variety houses. A single bill could contain singers\, dancers\, comedians\, musicians\, novelty performers and other acts. \nThe United later became a movie theater before closing in 1986. \nDecades later\, a major redevelopment joined the historic theater with the neighboring Montgomery Ward building. Following an extensive renovation\, the new UNITED reopened in July 2021 as a multipurpose arts center. \nA building that once presented performers now both presents them and helps train the next generation. \nSaturday’s tour makes that connection unusually literal. \nThen the Tour Heads Through Wilcox Park\nFrom The UNITED\, the group walks through Wilcox Park toward the Granite Theatre. \nThat makes the event a genuine downtown arts tour rather than three disconnected building visits. \nThe park itself is one of the features that makes this possible. \nWesterly’s compact downtown puts theaters\, music spaces\, restaurants\, shops and historic buildings within walking distance of one another\, with Wilcox Park sitting near the center of it all. \nFor young participants\, the walk also demonstrates something that’s easy to overlook when visiting one venue at a time: \nThese organizations are neighbors. \nThey’re part of the same arts community. \nAt the Granite\, Young Performers Get to Step Onto the Stage\nThe second major stop is the Granite Theatre at 1 Granite Street. \nHere\, participants will step onto the stage and hear how theatrical training reaches beyond memorizing lines and learning where to stand. \nThe Granite specifically emphasizes the ways theater can develop confidence\, communication skills and personal growth. \nThose benefits matter even for children who never intend to become professional actors. \nGetting onstage requires speaking clearly. \nActors have to listen to one another. \nThey need to collaborate\, remember instructions\, adapt when something unexpected happens and become comfortable communicating in front of other people. \nA theatrical production is also intensely collaborative. \nThe person delivering the line may be the one the audience sees\, but performances depend on directors\, designers\, technicians\, stage managers and many others working together. \nFor a child interested in theater but uncertain about being the center of attention\, there are plenty of ways into that world. \nThe Granite Has Been Expanding Its Youth Programs\nThe Granite’s mission specifically combines entertainment and education\, and the theater has been developing dedicated programming for younger performers. \nIts Youth Theatre Program has included theatrical training\, summer camps and staged productions for young actors. \nRecent youth programming has been designed for participants roughly 8 to 18 years old\, giving children and teenagers the opportunity to work toward an actual performance rather than treating theater solely as a classroom exercise. \nSaturday’s stop gives prospective young actors and their families a chance to see the space before deciding whether that kind of program feels right for them. \nThat can be much more useful than trying to make the decision from a website. \nThe Granite’s Stage Is Inside an 1849 Church\nThe building itself has already spent more than 175 years gathering people together. \nThe Greek Revival structure was purchased for $200 in 1843 and became the Christian Chapel in Westerly. \nThe building was completed in 1849 and later became the Broad Street Christian Church. \nIts basic historic character survived remarkably well\, although the steeple required remodeling after being damaged during the Hurricane of 1938. \nThe building eventually found an entirely different purpose. \nIn 2000\, it reopened as the Granite Theatre. \nThe former church sanctuary became an intimate performance venue where actors now perform only a short distance from the audience. \nFor a young performer stepping onto its stage Saturday morning\, it’s worth looking around. \nThat’s not a purpose-built modern auditorium. \nIt’s another piece of Westerly history that the arts helped preserve. \nThe Final Stop Is Kent Hall\nThe walking tour continues to 119 High Street\, where another former church has become one of Westerly’s major performance spaces. \nGeorge Kent Performance Hall is home to The Chorus of Westerly. \nThe organization uses Kent Hall for rehearsals\, classes\, concerts and educational programs throughout the year. \nFor young singers\, this portion of the tour may be particularly useful because The Chorus of Westerly has made children’s musical education part of its identity from the beginning. \nParticipants will learn how singers develop musicianship\, vocal technique and ensemble skills\, and how children can progress into serious choral performance even without arriving with years of previous training. \nYou Don’t Need to Arrive Already Knowing How to Sing in a Chorus\nThe Chorus of Westerly explicitly says that children don’t need previous voice lessons\, formal music classes or other musical training to begin its children’s program. \nTeaching them is part of the job. \nIts children’s program is designed for young people approximately ages 8 through 18 and uses multiple levels so developing singers can be placed appropriately. \nEach young singer receives at least two hours of rehearsal per week. \nAnd this isn’t a children’s choir that exists entirely apart from the organization’s major performances. \nOne of The Chorus of Westerly’s founding principles was giving children and teenagers the opportunity to sing challenging music alongside adults in serious performance settings. \nYoung singers have long participated in the organization’s main symphonic and Pops programming. \nThat makes the Kent Hall stop less about asking\, “Can my child already do this?” \nIt’s about discovering how they can learn. \nThe Chorus Has Built a Program That Can Last a Lifetime\nThe children’s program is only one piece of The Chorus of Westerly. \nThere is an auditioned Symphonic Chorus for adults. \nThere are also non-auditioned programs designed to make group singing accessible to people with different experience levels and at different stages of life. \nThe organization has developed a Foundations Chorus\, Threshold Singers and an Encore Choir for older adults\, among other educational and outreach programs. \nThat creates an unusual continuum. \nSomeone can begin singing at Kent Hall as a child and remain involved in choral music well into adulthood. \nThe organization isn’t simply producing concerts. \nIt’s trying to create singers. \nKent Hall Has Heard Some Extraordinary Music\nThe room the young performers will visit has hosted considerably more than local rehearsals. \nThe Chorus of Westerly first performed there in 1968. \nOver the decades\, Kent Hall has welcomed internationally known musicians and ensembles including Yo-Yo Ma\, Pete Seeger\, Rudolf Serkin\, The King’s Singers\, Chanticleer\, The Tallis Scholars\, the Choir of King’s College Cambridge and the Vienna Boys’ Choir. \nIts history predates all of them. \nConstruction of the building began in 1886 as Westerly’s first Roman Catholic church\, Immaculate Conception. \nThe Chorus eventually acquired the building and undertook years of restoration and renovation. \nIn 2004–05\, a nearly $2 million project added an office wing and backstage access. Later work addressed the roof\, bell tower\, HVAC systems\, rehearsal spaces and lower level. \nToday it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nSo Saturday’s young singers will be standing in a room with some stories to tell. \nThe Tour Is Really About Finding Your Door In\nA child saying “I like music” doesn’t necessarily know what comes next. \nDo I need lessons? \nCan I join a band? \nWhat if I’ve never acted before? \nDo I have to audition? \nWhat happens at an audition? \nCan I sing in a chorus if I can’t read music? \nWhat if I want to work in theater but don’t want to act? \nThose questions can make arts organizations seem more intimidating from the outside than they actually are. \nThe Westerly Performing Arts Tour removes some of that barrier by putting families directly in the spaces and introducing them to the people who can answer those questions. \nThere’s no requirement that a participant emerge from Saturday morning having chosen an artistic career. \nFinding something they’d like to try is enough. \nParents Need to Come Along With Younger Participants\nThe tour is designed for young performers\, but participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. \nThat makes sense for another reason. \nParents are usually the ones who need answers about schedules\, commitments\, auditions\, costs and transportation before a child can join a program. \nInstead of a young person coming home excited about something and trying to explain it\, parent and child can hear the information together. \nThe UNITED asks participants to reserve a spot in advance. \nThe tour begins at the UNITED marquee at 10 a.m. The UNITED describes the guided experience as approximately 90 minutes\, while the Chamber calendar blocks out 10 a.m. to noon\, so families would be wise to keep the full two-hour window available. \nThree Institutions\, One Arts Community\nThe most interesting part of the Westerly Performing Arts Tour may not be any single stop. \nIt’s the fact that all three stops exist so close together. \nWithin one morning\, a young person can explore a century-old theater reborn as a modern music and arts center\, stand on the stage of an 1849 church transformed into a community theater and visit an 1880s church that became home to a nationally recognized choral organization. \nThey’re different institutions with different histories and specialties. \nBut they’re doing versions of the same thing. \nThey’re taking people who want to create something and giving them a place to begin. \nOn September 19\, they’re opening those doors together. \nDetails\nEvent: The Westerly Performing Arts Tour\nDate: Saturday\, September 19\, 2026\nStart Time: 10 a.m.\nCalendar Window: 10 a.m.–noon\nGuided Tour Length: Approximately 90 minutes\nStarting Point: The UNITED Theatre marquee/front entrance\nStarting Address: 5 Canal Street\, Westerly\, RI 02891\nStops: The UNITED Theatre and Music School\, Granite Theatre and George Kent Performance Hall/The Chorus of Westerly\nAudience: Young performers and families interested in local performing arts opportunities\nUnder 18: Must be accompanied by an adult\nActivities: Behind-the-scenes theater visit\, music school introduction\, Granite Theatre stage visit\, choral education introduction and conversations with artists and educators\nWalking: The tour travels between downtown locations\, including a walk through Wilcox Park\nRegistration: Advance reservation is requested\nContact: The UNITED Theatre\, 401-388-8208 \nMore information is available at the Event Website link below. \nTo reserve your spot\, click the Event Registration link below. \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.

SUMMARY:WAAG Exhibition Brings Westerly’s Alternative Art Community Together at Studio 39A
DESCRIPTION:WAAG Exhibition brings more than 20 members of the Westerly Alternative Artists Guild together Saturday\, September 19\, for an evening gallery exhibition and art market at Studio 39A in Westerly. \nThe show runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at the grassroots arts and music space at 39A Beach Street. The format combines an exhibition with a market\, giving visitors a chance not only to see work by members of the newly organized guild but also to buy directly from participating artists. \nAdmission is particularly straightforward: \nBring a donation for the Westerly Animal Shelter. \nWAAG Is Creating a Place for Artists Who Don’t Always Fit the Traditional Gallery Mold\nThe Westerly Alternative Artists Guild\, or WAAG\, is a relatively new addition to Westerly’s growing arts community. \nAnd “alternative” is important to understanding what the group is trying to build. \nRather than defining art narrowly around traditional painting\, sculpture or the kind of work usually selected for a conventional fine-art gallery\, WAAG is assembling a community around artists working outside those boundaries. \nThe guild’s identity embraces the independent\, experimental\, DIY and sometimes unconventional side of making art. \nThat makes Friday’s exhibition as much an introduction to the organization as an art show. \nMore than 20 WAAG members are expected to participate. \nWith that many artists sharing one room\, visitors should expect variety rather than a single curatorial theme or medium. \nThis Is Both an Exhibition and a Market\nThe poster makes an important distinction: \n“A gallery & market art show.” \nThat means the evening isn’t designed solely around finished pieces hanging on a wall. \nArtists will have work available to browse and purchase\, turning Studio 39A into something closer to a temporary alternative-art marketplace. \nFor emerging artists\, that direct connection can matter. \nTraditional galleries generally select artists\, curate exhibitions and take a commission when work sells. Markets and artist-run shows can remove some of those barriers\, allowing creators to meet the people looking at their work and sell directly to them. \nFor visitors\, it also means this isn’t necessarily an event where you’re expected to quietly circle the room with your hands behind your back. \nTalk to the artists. \nAsk what they make. \nAnd if something grabs you\, find out whether you can take it home. \nStudio 39A Is a Natural Home for It\nStudio 39A is an all-ages\, grassroots art and music space at 39A Beach Street in Westerly. \nThe venue has become part of the area’s independent creative scene by providing a room for the kinds of artists and musicians who don’t necessarily have an obvious home elsewhere. \nThat includes intimate concerts and alternative music\, but Studio 39A isn’t simply a small music venue. \nIt operates as a community-driven cultural space. \nThat’s an important distinction for an event like this. \nWesterly already has established arts institutions\, galleries and performance spaces. Studio 39A occupies a different part of that ecosystem: smaller\, independent\, informal and intentionally accessible. \nWAAG fits naturally into that environment. \nWesterly’s Art Scene Is Bigger Than It Looks\nOne of the interesting things about this show is the larger arts community developing around it. \nWesterly has a surprising concentration of creative spaces within a relatively small area. \nThe long-established Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly operates as an artist-owned nonprofit gallery. The Hoxie Gallery presents exhibitions inside Westerly Library. Independent studios and shops have spread through downtown\, while the Westerly Arts Crawl has helped connect artists with businesses and the public. \nStudio 39A and WAAG represent another layer. \nThey’re not replacing those traditional institutions. \nThey’re creating an entry point for artists who may be younger\, emerging\, self-taught\, experimental or simply uninterested in fitting their work into conventional categories. \nA healthy local arts scene has room for both. \nThe DIY Poster Tells You Something About the Show\nYou don’t need much explanation of WAAG’s aesthetic after looking at the poster. \nHand lettering. \nUneven blocks of black ink. \nA roughly drawn eye. \nAlmost everything appears deliberately handmade rather than digitally polished. \nIt’s closer to a punk-show flyer or photocopied zine than a conventional gallery invitation. \nThat visual language has a long history in independent art and music scenes. \nBefore anyone could build a slick social graphic on a phone\, underground bands\, artists and promoters made flyers with markers\, typewriters\, scissors\, photocopiers and whatever else was available. \nThe imperfections became part of the identity. \nWAAG’s poster carries that same DIY spirit. \nIt doesn’t look like an invitation to an institutional gallery opening because this isn’t trying to be one. \nMore Than 20 Artists Means You Probably Won’t Know What You’re Walking Into\nThat’s arguably the best reason to go. \nA tightly curated solo exhibition gives you a deep look at one artist. \nThis is the opposite. \nWith 20-plus WAAG members participating\, the point is discovery. \nThe currently available public announcement does not provide a complete roster of every exhibiting artist or a piece-by-piece catalog\, and that’s information worth leaving open rather than guessing from social-media accounts associated with the organization. \nWhat is confirmed is the scale: more than 20 members of the guild\, a combination of gallery exhibition and art market\, and four hours to explore it. \nThe organizers are also encouraging visitors to follow @waag39a for updates as the show approaches\, so additional artist introductions may appear before Friday. \nAn Art Show for People Who Don’t Think They’re Art-Show People\nAlternative community shows can do something larger institutions sometimes struggle with. \nThey can lower the psychological barrier to walking through the door. \nYou don’t need to understand art history. \nYou don’t need to know whether something qualifies as expressionism\, assemblage\, lowbrow art or anything else. \nYou don’t even have to like everything. \nIn fact\, with more than 20 independent artists showing work\, you almost certainly won’t. \nThat’s part of the fun. \nFind the strange thing. \nFind the funny thing. \nFind the thing you don’t understand. \nFind the artist whose work makes you stop for another 30 seconds when everything else gets five. \nAnd if you’re someone making art at home who has never thought of yourself as the sort of person who belongs in a guild or gallery\, pay attention to the people exhibiting. \nThat may be the larger point of WAAG. \nA Four-Hour Snapshot of Westerly’s Alternative Art Scene\nWesterly has no shortage of polished cultural institutions. \nThis is something else. \nOne night. \nOne grassroots studio. \nMore than 20 artists. \nArtwork for sale. \nA handmade flyer that looks like it was designed specifically to make a graphic designer nervous. \nAnd admission that helps the WARM Center. \nFor WAAG\, the exhibition is a chance to put a relatively new artistic community in one room and show Westerly what its members have been making. \nFor everyone else\, it’s an opportunity to see what happens when the artists who don’t necessarily fit neatly into the established boxes decide to build their own box. \nThen cover it with art. \nDetails\nEvent: WAAG Exhibition: A Group Show\nDate: Saturday\, September 19\, 2026\nTime: 7–11 p.m.\nVenue: Studio 39A\nAddress: 39A Beach Street\, Unit 1\, Westerly\, RI 02891\nOrganizer: Westerly Alternative Artists Guild (WAAG)\nArtists: More than 20 WAAG members\nFormat: Group gallery exhibition and art market\nArtwork for Sale: Yes; the event is promoted as both a gallery and market show\nAdmission: Donation for the WARM Center\nAll Ages: Studio 39A operates as an all-ages community arts space\nUpdates: Follow @waag39a on Instagram for additional exhibition information and artist announcements \n  \n  \nFeatured image is an artistic representation inspired by the event and may not depict the actual people\, location\, or activities shown.
