More than five decades later\, Smith is still leading a large-format band through the R&B\, soul and rock & roll that first inspired him. \nSmith grew up in Smithfield\, Rhode Island\, in a musical family. He is a first cousin of John Cafferty\, who would go on to lead John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. \nSome of Smith’s earliest performances were considerably less glamorous. \nAs children spending summers at Roy Carpenter’s Beach in Matunuck\, members of the family would stage talent shows inside their beach cottage. Smith remembers performing in front of the refrigerator. \nEventually\, the audience got bigger. \nMuch bigger. \nTen Musicians and Five Horns\nAt a time when economics have pushed many touring bands toward smaller lineups\, The Nakeds have held onto the big-band sound that has defined them. \nThe current 10-piece lineup puts Smith on vocals and harmonica in front of guitar\, bass\, keyboards and drums. \nThen come the horns. \nTrumpet. Trombone. Alto saxophone. Tenor saxophone. Baritone saxophone. \nFive of them. \nThat combination allows the band to move through R&B\, soul and rock & roll with the kind of brass arrangements that would be impossible for a typical four-piece bar band to reproduce. \nThe result isn’t designed for sitting quietly with your hands folded. \nThis is dance music. \nWhen the Big Man Joined the Band\nOne of the most important chapters in The Nakeds’ history began with Clarence Clemons. \nBest known as the towering saxophonist beside Bruce Springsteen in the E Street Band\, Clemons developed a long musical relationship with Steve Smith & The Nakeds beginning in the 1980s. \nAnd this wasn’t simply a case of a famous musician sitting in for a song one night. \nWhen Clemons wasn’t touring with Springsteen\, he performed extensively with The Nakeds. The relationship lasted from roughly 1983 until Clemons’ death in 2011\, with shows sometimes billed as Steve Smith & The Nakeds featuring Clarence Clemons. \nClemons also worked with the group in the studio. \nThe connection brought The Nakeds into the orbit of other E Street musicians as well. They performed alongside guitarist Nils Lofgren and bassist Garry Tallent\, while Lofgren and Clemons contributed material to the band’s recordings. \nFrom The Temptations to a President\nMore than 50 years of performing has produced an unusual résumé. \nThe Nakeds have shared stages with artists including The Temptations and Gary U.S. Bonds and performed with musicians from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. \nSmith also performed for President Bill Clinton during the 1990s. \nThe band became a fixture on the New England live-music circuit while periodically finding its way onto much larger stages and into national media. \nThen came MTV. \nAnd eventually\, a cartoon baby with a British accent. \nThe Strange Second Life of “I’m Huge”\nThe Nakeds recorded “I’m Huge (And the Babes Go Wild)” during the 1980s. \nYears later\, the song unexpectedly resurfaced when it appeared in an episode of Family Guy in 2008. \nFor a band already decades into its career\, the placement introduced The Nakeds to an entirely new audience. Renewed online attention helped lead to a distribution relationship with Sony and gave the group’s recordings another life long after their original release. \nIt wasn’t their first encounter with television. The band had previously appeared through MTV’s Basement Tapes during the music channel’s early years. \nTheir music has also found its way into films\, including Dumb and Dumber To and The Greatest Beer Run Ever. \nNot bad mileage for a Rhode Island horn band that started in 1973. \nThe Night Bill Murray Joined In\nThere’s another story that sounds almost too perfect for this band’s history. \nIn 2019\, filmmaker Peter Farrelly brought Bill Murray to see Steve Smith & The Nakeds perform at Roy Carpenter’s Beach in Matunuck. \nMurray didn’t simply watch. \nHe joined the band. \nFor Smith\, it brought the story around in a peculiar circle. He was back at the same beach where he’d spent childhood summers performing in family talent shows decades earlier. \nExcept this time there was a professional band behind him. \nAnd Bill Murray had wandered onto the stage. \nRhode Island Music Hall of Fame\nBy 2013\, the band’s place in Rhode Island music history was formally recognized when Steve Smith & The Nakeds were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. \nThe Rhode Island House of Representatives also recognized the group for the honor. \nThe induction acknowledged something that becomes increasingly difficult to ignore with each passing year: The Nakeds haven’t merely survived changes in musical taste\, venues and the business of performing. \nThey’ve kept working. \nMore than five decades after the first version of the band came together\, the calendar still fills with concerts. \nSmith has summed up his retirement plan with a wonderfully uncomplicated phrase: \n“’Til the phone stops ringing.” \nApparently\, it hasn’t. \nSaturday Night Down Back\nFor the August 29 show\, The Nakeds head to the Charlestown Rathskeller’s outdoor entertainment area known as Down Back. \nThe setting includes an outdoor stage\, backyard bar and burger shack surrounded by the Rathskeller’s wooded Charlestown property. There’s a bonfire nearby along with lawn games including cornhole and bocce. \nIt’s intentionally more backyard party than formal concert venue. \nThat should suit this particular band just fine. \nGuests can arrive early for dinner and drinks before heading Down Back for the show. \nOnce 10 musicians take the stage and five horns start competing with one another for oxygen\, the quiet part of the evening is probably over. \nFifty-Three Years and Still Dancing\nLongevity in music can sometimes turn a band into a museum piece\, faithfully recreating what it did decades earlier for an audience that remembers the first time around. \nThe Nakeds have taken a different route. \nThe history is there. Clarence Clemons is part of it. DESCRIPTION:Afroman brings one of the most recognizable comedy-rap songs of the early 2000s\, a Grammy-nominated career and more than 25 years of hip-hop to the Sun Patio at Mohegan Sun on Saturday\, August 29. \nThe outdoor concert begins at 8 p.m. and is part of Mohegan Sun’s ticketed Sun Patio Concert Series\, which brings nationally known performers to the outdoor venue throughout the summer. \nAnd yes\, there’s almost no chance Afroman gets through the night without explaining exactly why he didn’t clean his room. \nBefore “Because I Got High”\nAfroman was born Joseph Foreman\, and his DIY approach to making music started remarkably early. \nWhile in eighth grade\, Foreman recorded a homemade song about a teacher who had gotten him kicked out of school for sagging his pants. He began selling copies to classmates\, and according to Afroman’s account\, roughly 400 copies eventually circulated among students and teachers. \nThe experience taught him something. \nEven when he wasn’t physically at school\, his music could be. \nLong before social media allowed an artist to bypass the traditional music business and reach listeners directly\, Afroman had already stumbled onto the basic idea. \nMusic was also part of his life outside hip-hop. As a youngster\, he played drums and guitar in church\, and guitar would remain part of his musical identity after he became known primarily as a rapper. \nA Hit Born on Napster\nAfroman independently released his first album\, My Fro-losophy\, in 1998. \nAfter relocating to Hattiesburg\, Mississippi\, he connected with producer Tim Ramenofsky\, better known as Headfridge\, along with musicians Jody Stallone and Darrell Havard. \nThe resulting album\, Because I Got High\, arrived in 2000. \nThen something happened that could almost only have happened at that particular moment in music history. \nThe title track began spreading through Napster. \nAt the turn of the millennium\, the file-sharing service was disrupting the record industry by allowing millions of people to trade digital music directly. For an independent artist without the promotional machinery of a major label\, it also created an unexpected way for a song to travel. \n“Because I Got High” traveled. \nFast. \nIt Started With a Dirty Room\nThe inspiration wasn’t exactly profound. \nAfroman didn’t want to clean his room. \nThat became the foundation for an escalating series of everyday responsibilities abandoned for the same reason: he got high. \nThe joke was simple enough to understand immediately\, the chorus nearly impossible to forget\, and the song eventually made its way to The Howard Stern Show. \nBy 2001\, Afroman had an international hit. \n“Because I Got High” also appeared in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and became permanently attached to the particular strain of stoner comedy that flourished around the beginning of the century. \nThen the Recording Academy came calling. \nFrom Napster to the Grammys\n“Because I Got High” earned Afroman a nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 2002 Grammy Awards. \nHe didn’t win. \nBut consider the route that got him there. \nAn independent musician recorded an absurd song inspired by not cleaning his room\, distributed the album at concerts and through an illegal file-sharing network\, watched the song spread across the Internet and eventually found himself nominated for one of the music industry’s biggest awards. \nA major-label deal followed. \nAfroman joined Cypress Hill’s Smoke Out festival alongside acts including Method Man and Deftones\, and Universal Records signed him to a multi-album deal. \nThe label released The Good Times in 2001\, combining previously recorded material with additional songs and putting Afroman in front of a much larger audience. \nThen There’s “Crazy Rap”\nFor a lot of people\, Afroman has two songs permanently lodged somewhere in their early-2000s memory. \nThe second is officially called “Crazy Rap.” \nPlenty of people know it by another name. \n“Colt 45 and Two Zig-Zags.” \nThe long\, comedic story-song became another enduring Afroman favorite and helped establish that the humor of “Because I Got High” wasn’t a one-time accident. \nComedy became part of his musical identity. \nRather than spend the next 25 years trying to distance himself from the novelty and marijuana humor that made him famous\, Afroman embraced it. \nHis shows combine hip-hop\, storytelling\, comedy\, audience interaction and the guitar-playing that reaches back to his musical beginnings. \nHe Went Independent Again\nThe massive success of “Because I Got High” briefly put Afroman inside the traditional major-label system. \nIt didn’t keep him there. \nHe eventually returned to releasing music independently\, using the Internet to maintain a direct relationship with listeners. \nIn a strange way\, it brought his career back to where it started. \nFirst he sold homemade recordings to classmates. \nThen his music spread through Napster. \nEventually\, digital distribution and social media gave independent musicians the ability to release music directly to audiences without waiting for a traditional record company to decide whether they belonged. \nAfroman had already been doing some version of that since eighth grade. \nStill on the Road 25 Years Later\nThe strangest part of the Afroman story may be its longevity. \n“Because I Got High” became a phenomenon in 2001\, the sort of enormous novelty-infused hit that can easily turn an artist into a pop-culture time capsule. \nAfroman kept going. \nHe’s continued recording and touring independently\, while “Because I Got High” and “Crazy Rap” remain staples of his live performances. \nHis 2026 schedule continues beyond Connecticut with performances around the country. \nSo Saturday’s Sun Patio show isn’t simply an early-2000s nostalgia appearance. \nIt’s another stop in a career that somehow survived the transition from homemade tapes to Napster\, major labels\, streaming and social media. \nA Different Kind of Sun Patio Concert\nIt’s worth distinguishing Saturday’s show from the free Friday-night Party on the Sun Patio concerts at Mohegan Sun. \nAfroman appears as part of the separate Sun Patio Concert Series. \nThese are ticketed concerts featuring nationally known performers\, with the 2026 schedule also including artists such as Rick Ross\, Ying Yang Twins\, Dion and Lakeview. \nThe Afroman concert is open to all ages and takes place rain or shine. \nGeneral admission is standing room only. No drummer keeping time. \nJust Green\, a piano and more than four decades of experience stretching from Betty Carter and Art Blakey to Freddie Hubbard\, Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson. \nDoors open at 7:15 p.m.\, with the performance running from 8 to 10 p.m. The all-ages concert is the second of two consecutive nights Green will perform at The Side Door. \nFrom His Father’s Records to the Piano\nGreen was born in New York in 1963 and raised in Berkeley\, California\, where music was already waiting for him at home. \nHis father played tenor saxophone\, and records by musicians including Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker became part of Green’s early musical education. \nHe began classical piano lessons at seven\, but something else was happening when he sat at the instrument. Green was listening to jazz records and trying to reproduce what he heard\, figuring out melodies and improvisations by ear. \nEventually\, jazz won. \nWhile still a teenager\, Green was already working professionally around the Bay Area. He performed with singer Fay Carroll and gained experience alongside established musicians including trumpeter Eddie Henderson and bassist Chuck Israels. \nBefore Green was old enough to build a national reputation\, he was learning how to listen\, accompany another musician and swing. \nThose lessons would become useful very quickly. \nBetty Carter’s Classroom\nAfter moving to New York\, Green joined legendary jazz vocalist Betty Carter in 1983. \nCarter’s bands had a reputation for becoming classrooms for exceptional young musicians. She demanded that players listen\, respond and develop their own musical identities rather than simply reproduce what they’d heard before. \nGreen stayed for four years. \nThen\, in 1987\, he stepped into another of jazz’s great training grounds. \nArt Blakey called. \nBecoming a Jazz Messenger\nJoining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers carried a significance far beyond landing another job. \nFor decades\, Blakey’s band served as a launching pad for generations of major jazz musicians. Alumni included Wayne Shorter\, Lee Morgan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Wynton Marsalis and Branford Marsalis\, among many others. \nGreen had grown up listening to Blakey. \nNow he was sitting at the piano in his band. \nGreen remained a Jazz Messenger until Blakey’s death in 1990\, absorbing the hard-driving rhythmic approach that would become an important part of his own playing. \nHis next stop didn’t exactly lower the stakes. \nGreen went on to work with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard\, one of the defining jazz musicians of the postwar era. \nRay Brown and an Extraordinary Phone Call\nGreen eventually joined another master\, bassist Ray Brown. \nBrown’s career reached all the way back to playing with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker during the birth of bebop. He had also spent years performing with Oscar Peterson. \nGreen joined Brown’s trio in the early 1990s and remained with the group for several years. \nThen Oscar Peterson himself took notice. \nIn 1993\, Green became the first recipient of the City of Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music. \nPeterson personally selected him. \nFor a young jazz pianist\, it’s difficult to imagine a more intimidating endorsement. One of the greatest pianists in the history of the music had effectively pointed across generations and said: watch this one. \nThe relationship didn’t end with an award. \nOscar and Benny\nGreen and Peterson eventually performed together and later recorded together. \nTheir collaboration produced Oscar and Benny\, recorded with Ray Brown and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. \nThe album eventually leaves the rest of the musicians behind for its closing performance. \nTwo pianos. \nOscar Peterson at one. \nBenny Green at the other. \nFor Green\, it was another direct connection in an extraordinary musical lineage. The musicians he’d once encountered through records weren’t simply influences anymore. \nThey had become his teachers\, employers\, collaborators and peers. \nBuilding a Career of His Own\nGreen eventually stepped out from those legendary bands and established himself as a leader. \nHis recording career has included albums for Blue Note and other major jazz labels\, with more than 100 recording sessions as a leader and sideman. \nHis Blue Note years produced albums including Lineage\, Greens\, Testifyin! Live at the Village Vanguard\, That’s Right!\, The Place to Be\, Kaleidoscope and These Are Soulful Days. \nAlong the way\, Green has worked with another generation of major jazz musicians\, including bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone. \nThe thread running through it all is swing. \nGreen can be technically dazzling\, but technique isn’t the destination. His playing comes from a jazz tradition in which rhythm matters just as much as harmony\, and where even a complicated improvisation still needs to move. \nNow Take Everyone Else Away\nThat’s what makes Saturday’s performance particularly interesting. \nGreen is playing alone. \nA trio normally divides responsibilities among musicians. A bassist can establish the foundation while a drummer controls pulse and dynamics. The pianist can leave space\, respond to the others or step forward and then retreat. \nSolo piano removes that safety net. \nGreen has to provide the bass movement\, harmony\, melody\, rhythm and improvisation himself. He decides when the music breathes and when it drives forward. \nFor a musician whose education came from some of jazz’s greatest bandleaders and rhythm sections\, the format exposes everything he’s learned. \nOne instrument has to contain the whole band. \nNew Music Is Coming\nThe Old Lyme performances also arrive at an interesting point in Green’s recording career. \nHis new album\, Renovation!\, is scheduled for release on September 18\, less than a month after his two nights at The Side Door. \nThe timing puts the Connecticut appearances immediately ahead of the next chapter in a recording career that has stretched across decades. \nGreen performs at The Side Door on both Friday\, August 28\, and Saturday\, August 29\, before heading to Portsmouth\, New Hampshire\, for another performance the following night. \nSaturday’s Old Lyme concert is the second of the two Side Door performances. \nA Room Made for This Kind of Night\nThe Side Door Jazz Club is tucked inside the historic Old Lyme Inn at 85 Lyme Street. \nRather than a general entertainment venue that occasionally books jazz\, The Side Door was created as a dedicated jazz listening room. \nThat distinction matters for a solo piano performance. \nThere are no arena screens or enormous distances separating musician and audience. Three distinct voices come together over songs about relationships\, growing older\, small-town life and the messy territory between falling in love and watching it fall apart. \nIt’s a formula that has carried Restless Road beyond 300 million career streams\, attracted more than 5 million social media followers and taken the trio from Nashville to sold-out headlining shows in New York and London. \nOn Saturday night\, you can see them at the Wolf Den without buying a ticket. \nThree Voices That Found Each Other the Long Way Around\nRestless Road’s story didn’t begin with three friends starting a band in a garage. \nIt began on television. \nZach Beeken and Colton Pack competed separately on the third season of The X Factor in 2013 before being brought together as part of a new country group. Restless Road was born\, eventually advancing to the semifinals of the competition. \nThe lineup would change in the years that followed. Garrett Nichols joined the group in 2015\, while Pack spent time away before eventually returning. \nThe result is today’s trio: Beeken\, Nichols and Pack. \nTheir voices are different enough that each remains recognizable on its own. Put them together\, though\, and those differences become the point. \nRather than building the music around one dominant frontman with two backing singers\, Restless Road uses all three voices as part of its identity. \nKane Brown Helped Put Them Back on the Road\nAnother future country star was around during those early television days. \nKane Brown crossed paths with members of Restless Road before either act had established the careers they have today. \nYears later\, Restless Road posted a cover of Brown’s “Good as You.” The connection was rekindled\, and Brown became an important part of the group’s next chapter. \nRestless Road eventually signed through Brown’s label partnership with Sony Music Nashville and joined him on tour. \nBrown also appeared on the trio’s 2020 recording of “Take Me Home\,” which draws from John Denver’s “Take Me Home\, Country Roads.” \nThe collaboration helped introduce the group’s harmonies to a much larger country audience. \nThen Came “Growing Old With You”\nRestless Road found its breakthrough with a love song. \n“Growing Old With You” reached No. 1 on SiriusXM’s The Highway and became one of the group’s signature recordings. \nIt’s an uncomplicated premise: finding the person you don’t just want today\, but the person you want beside you decades from now. \nThat emphasis on the song and the voices rather than production tricks proved particularly well suited to Restless Road. \nThe trio later performed “Growing Old With You” on ABC’s The Bachelor\, giving the group another national showcase. \nBy then\, the road was getting considerably less restless. \n18 Songs for a First Album\nRestless Road released its debut full-length album\, Last Rodeo\, in 2023. \nThey didn’t ease into it. \nThe album arrived with 18 tracks\, giving Beeken\, Nichols and Pack room to explore several sides of contemporary country rather than constructing an album around one successful single. \n“Growing Old With You” is there\, alongside “Bar Friends\,” “Sundown Somewhere\,” “On My Way\,” “I Don’t Wanna Be That Guy” and the title track. \nThe songs also reflect different stages of relationships and life\, moving between commitment\, heartbreak\, friendship and the uncertainty that comes before somebody figures out which direction they’re headed. \nMembers of the trio contributed to the writing throughout the album\, including the title track. \nFrom Nashville to London\nRestless Road has spent much of the years since building its reputation the old-fashioned way. \nThey’ve toured. \nThe trio has shared the road with Kane Brown\, Tim McGraw\, Russell Dickerson\, Cole Swindell and Brett Young\, among others\, while also making festival appearances at Stagecoach and CMA Fest. \nTheir own Last Rodeo Tour demonstrated that an audience was willing to come specifically for them. \nRestless Road sold out New York City’s Gramercy Theatre\, Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl and Lafayette in London. \nThe group has also made repeated trips overseas\, including an appearance at the massive C2C: Country to Country festival in the United Kingdom. \nThat’s a long way from three singers trying to survive a television competition. \nNew Music Keeps the Story Moving\nLast Rodeo established the band\, but Restless Road hasn’t stopped there. \nMore recent releases include “Last Thing I Deserve\,” “Goin’ Out Like That” and “Done It By Now\,” continuing the group’s move beyond its debut album while keeping the three-part vocals at the center. \nThat matters for Saturday’s Wolf Den show. \nThis isn’t a nostalgia appearance built around one hit from several years ago. Restless Road is still in the middle of building its career\, releasing new music and expanding an audience that has already reached well beyond the United States. \nA Big Act in a Small Room\nAnd that’s what makes the Wolf Den date interesting. \nRestless Road has played major country festivals\, toured with some of Nashville’s biggest stars and sold out its own headlining dates in New York\, Nashville and London. \nThe Wolf Den is different. \nLocated inside Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Earth\, it’s an intimate room where the audience surrounds a stage that feels unusually close compared with the arenas and festival grounds Restless Road has become accustomed to playing. \nEven better\, admission is free. \nThere is a catch. \nCapacity is limited. \nDon’t Show Up at 7:55\nWolf Den seating is first-come\, first-served\, and reservations aren’t available. \nGuests can begin lining up no earlier than three hours before showtime. DESCRIPTION:The Ultimate Doors in the Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods Resort Casino brings the music\, atmosphere\, and unmistakable stage presence of one of rock’s most influential bands on Saturday\, August 29. \nThe concert begins at 8 p.m.\, but it isn’t a typical night of musicians playing familiar Doors songs. The four members of The Ultimate Doors have built their show around something far more ambitious: recreating the experience of seeing Jim Morrison\, Ray Manzarek\, Robby Krieger and John Densmore perform during The Doors’ late-1960s prime. \nPeriod-correct instruments\, vintage equipment\, wardrobe and even the arrangement of the musicians onstage are part of the illusion. \nFor a couple of hours\, they’re trying to make 2026 disappear. \nFour Musicians Recreating Four Originals\nThe Ultimate Doors deliberately maintains the four-man configuration of the original band. \nDarrian Kenney takes the Jim Morrison role on vocals. Branden Eifrid handles organ and keyboards in the Ray Manzarek position\, Todd Huffman takes Robby Krieger’s guitar role and Jordyn Huffman sits behind the drums in the place occupied by John Densmore. \nThat configuration matters more with The Doors than it might with many other rock bands. \nThe original group didn’t rely on a traditional full-time bass guitarist onstage. Manzarek frequently supplied bass lines with his keyboards while simultaneously contributing the swirling organ sound that became one of The Doors’ musical signatures. \nKrieger brought influences ranging from blues to flamenco guitar\, while Densmore’s jazz background gave the rhythm section an unusual looseness. \nThen Morrison stood at the front of it all. \nThe combination produced a band that was immediately identifiable\, even before he started singing. \nThis Is Supposed to Be 1968\nThe Ultimate Doors isn’t trying to imagine what The Doors might sound like today. \nThe target is much more specific. \n\n\n\nBy then\, The Doors had exploded out of Los Angeles with their 1967 self-titled debut and followed it with Strange Days. In 1968\, Waiting for the Sun became the band’s first No. 1 album in the United States\, while “Hello\, I Love You” reached No. 1 on the singles chart. \nJim Morrison had become one of the defining figures of the counterculture\, and The Doors had developed a reputation for concerts that could feel theatrical\, unpredictable and occasionally dangerous. \nThat’s the period The Ultimate Doors wants audiences to enter. \nThey Sweat the Small Stuff\nPlaying the songs correctly is only part of the job. \nThe Ultimate Doors uses period-correct instruments and vintage-style gear chosen to reproduce the tones of the original recordings and concerts. \nThe band also pays attention to how that equipment is positioned onstage\, how the musicians dress and how the performance itself looks. \nIt’s an unusually obsessive approach to the tribute-band idea. \nThere’s a practical reason for some of it. A vintage-style organ isn’t simply a stage prop when you’re recreating Ray Manzarek. The equipment is responsible for a major part of the sound. \nBut some details exist purely to complete the illusion. \nThe wardrobe matters. The stage arrangement matters. The way Kenney inhabits Morrison’s role matters. \nEven the microphone cable can matter. \nThe goal isn’t to remind you of The Doors. \nIt’s to make you briefly forget you’re watching anybody else. \nSomeone Who Was There Put Them to the Test\nPlenty of tribute bands have glowing quotes from fans. \nThe Ultimate Doors has something considerably harder to dismiss. \nGareth Blyth worked as a roadie for the real Doors from 1969 through 1971. \nBlyth’s experience wasn’t limited to hauling equipment. He worked soundchecks with Jim Morrison\, tuned Robby Krieger’s guitars and worked alongside producer Paul Rothchild and recording engineer Bruce Botnick. At one point\, when John Densmore developed blisters\, Blyth even sat behind Densmore’s drum kit. \nDecades later\, he saw The Ultimate Doors. \nBlyth wasn’t predisposed to love the idea. By his own account\, cover bands generally aren’t his thing. \nWhat caught his attention was the detail. \nHe recognized the equipment. He noticed that it was positioned correctly. He recognized the wardrobe and presentation. More importantly\, he thought the four musicians could actually play the material. \nComing from someone who had stood onstage and backstage with the real band\, that’s a considerably different endorsement than a five-star review from somebody who heard “Light My Fire” on the radio. \nMore Than “Light My Fire”\nThe Doors left behind one of the most recognizable catalogs of the classic-rock era. \n“Light My Fire” is unavoidable\, but the songbook reaches much further. \n“Break On Through (To the Other Side)” introduced the band on its first album. “People Are Strange” captured its darker psychedelic side. “Hello\, I Love You” gave the group another massive pop hit. \nThen there are songs such as “Roadhouse Blues\,” “Love Her Madly\,” “Riders on the Storm” and “L.A. DESCRIPTION:Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival 2026 fills the sky over Norton Park with hot air balloons on Friday and Saturday\, August 28–29\, during a free two-day festival featuring a Friday night balloon glow and fireworks\, Saturday balloon launches\, nearly 100 vendors\, amusement rides\, food trucks\, live entertainment and a classic and specialty car show. \nThis one is outside The CT Beacon’s usual southeastern Connecticut and southwestern Rhode Island coverage area\, but we’re making an exception. The 39th annual festival offers something different enough to justify a little road trip\, particularly for families looking for one more big summer outing before Labor Day. \nFrom Mystic\, plan on a little over an hour in the car. The most natural route takes you west along I-95 to Old Saybrook and then north on Route 9 into central Connecticut. Route 9 follows the Connecticut River corridor for much of the trip\, passing the lower river valley before continuing through Middletown toward the Plainville area. It’s a relatively easy drive\, and considerably more pleasant than spending an hour crawling through a string of commercial highways. \nAt the other end: dozens of enormous balloons glowing against the night sky. \nThat seems worth the mileage. \nFriday Night: Balloon Glow and Fireworks\nIf you’re making the trip from southeastern Connecticut and only choosing one portion of the festival\, Friday night is the obvious choice. \nFriday’s signature event is the Hot Air Balloon Glow\, when tethered balloons remain on the ground while their burners illuminate the envelopes from inside. \nOnce darkness falls\, those enormous balloons essentially become glowing lanterns scattered across Norton Park. \nThen look higher. \nThe festival’s fireworks display is scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m. Friday\, creating a night that combines two things you don’t ordinarily get at the same summer festival: glowing hot air balloons and fireworks. \nThe exact fireworks start time is flexible. Organizers specifically warn visitors not to plan on arriving at precisely 9:15\, since conditions could cause the display to begin somewhat earlier or later. \nIf weather prevents Friday’s fireworks\, they’re scheduled to move to Saturday night. \nSaturday Starts at 6 A.M.\nSaturday belongs to the balloons. \nThe first launch is scheduled for 6 a.m.\, taking advantage of the calmer atmospheric conditions balloon pilots typically seek early in the morning. \nFor this one event\, visitors can actually park at Norton Park. There is no shuttle service that early\, and all vehicles must be removed from the park by 9 a.m. before the main Saturday festival gets underway. \nIf 6 a.m. sounds a little ambitious for a drive from Mystic\, there’s another chance. \nA second mass balloon launch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday. \nBoth launches are weather-dependent\, and the pilots themselves make the final decision about whether conditions are safe enough to fly. \nThat’s worth emphasizing if balloons are your primary reason for making the drive: a scheduled balloon launch isn’t a guaranteed balloon launch. \nWind\, visibility and other conditions matter enormously to these aircraft. \nNo\, You Can’t Ride in the Balloons\nThis is probably the festival’s most frequently misunderstood attraction. \nThe Plainville Fire Company doesn’t sell or arrange balloon rides. \nMany of the balloons participating in the festival are classified as experimental aircraft and aren’t permitted to offer commercial passenger rides. The balloons are there for the launches and glow rather than paid sightseeing flights. \nSo come to watch them. \nJust don’t arrive expecting to climb into a basket. \nThere’s Plenty Happening Between Balloon Launches\nThe balloons get the photographs\, but they’re only part of the weekend. \nNorton Park fills with nearly 100 arts\, crafts and other vendors\, offering handmade goods\, local products and other items throughout the festival. Organizers are also promising a particularly large collection of food trucks representing a variety of cuisines. \nAmusement attractions include rides\, bounce houses\, games and an expanded ride area featuring a giant slide. Those attractions aren’t included simply because festival admission is free; bring money for ride tickets\, food and shopping. \nLive music and other entertainment continue throughout the festival as well. \nSaturday also adds a classic and specialty car show\, giving visitors something substantial to explore during the middle of the day when the balloons aren’t flying. \nThat’s actually useful information when planning your visit. If you arrive at noon Saturday expecting a sky filled with balloons\, you’re going to be disappointed. The scheduled balloon activity happens at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. \nAt noon\, go look at the cars. The balloons need a nap. \nAdmission Is Free\nThere’s no admission charge for the Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival. \nNorton Park is a public park\, and the Plainville Fire Company keeps admission to the festival free. Visitors pay individually for food\, rides\, games and anything purchased from vendors. \nThe event is also a fundraiser for the Plainville Fire Company\, which has served the community since 1885. Festival proceeds help support community organizations and the company’s student scholarship programs. \nFor a family making the drive from the Mystic area\, free admission makes the road trip considerably easier to justify. \nParking: Read This Before You Leave\nThis is probably the most important logistical part of the guide. \nDo not drive directly to Norton Park expecting general festival parking. \nThere is no general public parking at Norton Park during the main festival hours on Friday or Saturday. \nInstead\, festival visitors park at designated off-site lots and take shuttle buses to Norton Park. \nThe primary parking areas are: \nRobertson Airport\n62 Johnson Avenue\nPlainville\, CT 06062 \nThis is the festival’s largest parking area\, with thousands of spaces\, and organizers specifically recommend it for families and visitors traveling with children. \nA second parking area is available at the former GE/ABB lot on Woodford Avenue. \nParking costs $5 per vehicle\, cash only\, with the money helping offset the cost of the shuttle system. \nBuses run continuously between the parking areas and Norton Park\, and strollers are permitted aboard the shuttles. \nAfter the Friday fireworks\, expect crowds. Festival organizers say they operate approximately 30 buses continuously to return visitors to the parking areas\, but thousands of people may be leaving Norton Park at approximately the same time. \nIn other words\, don’t expect to watch the final firework and be cruising home five minutes later. \nAccessible Parking\nLimited accessible parking is available closer to the festival inside Norton Park for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability placard or license plate. \nOrganizers ask drivers to have the placard clearly displayed before reaching the Broad Street/South Washington Street intersection so traffic personnel can direct the vehicle appropriately. \nMotorcycle parking is also available at Norton Park. \nWhat About Rain?\nThere is no festival rain date. \nLight rain doesn’t necessarily cancel the festival\, and many activities may continue. \nBalloons are another matter. \nLaunches and the balloon glow are highly dependent on weather conditions\, and pilots have final authority over whether their balloons participate. Wind conditions that wouldn’t interfere with walking around a festival can be enough to keep balloons grounded. \nThe fireworks are scheduled for Friday night\, with Saturday serving as the backup night if weather forces their postponement. \nFor anyone driving from southeastern Connecticut\, this is one event where checking conditions before getting into the car really matters. \nLeave the Drone at Home\nIt would certainly produce spectacular video. \nDon’t do it. \nDrones are prohibited because of the danger they present to hot air balloons. \nFestival organizers also strongly discourage bringing pets. Between the crowds\, balloon burners\, music\, rides and fireworks\, Norton Park can become an unusually loud and stimulating environment for animals. Service animals are permitted\, including aboard the shuttle buses. \nIs It Worth the Drive From Mystic?\nFor most events an hour or more outside our normal coverage area\, probably not. \nThis one’s different. \nIf you’ve never seen a hot air balloon glow\, Friday provides the best argument for making the trip. You get the festival during the afternoon and evening\, food and rides for the kids\, the balloon glow after dark and fireworks to finish the night. \nSaturday makes more sense for people who really want to see the balloons fly. What began on small southeastern Connecticut stages gradually developed into a regional act performing at casinos\, festivals\, fairs\, vineyards and concert series throughout New England. \nBosse describes himself as a Nashville recording artist\, but his musical identity remains firmly connected to New England. \nHis influences reach back to Merle Haggard\, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash while incorporating newer artists such as Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers. Southern rock and bluegrass fill out a sound that’s considerably rougher around the edges than contemporary pop-country. \nWhat Happened to Country?\nIf there’s one song that explains what Bosse is trying to do\, its title nearly does the job by itself. \n“What Happened to Country” was released in 2021 and grew into his breakout recording\, eventually surpassing 2 million streams on Spotify. \nThe song pushes back against the increasingly polished and commercial direction of mainstream country music while looking toward the storytelling and working-class character Bosse associates with the genre’s past. \nThat attitude runs through much of his music. \nBosse isn’t trying to reproduce vintage country note for note. The Northern Roots can move from traditional country into southern rock and bluegrass\, but those older influences remain underneath it. \nThe Northern Roots Bring the Muscle\nThe Northern Roots turn Bosse’s songwriting into a full-band experience. \nThroughout the group’s history\, its arrangements have incorporated instruments including fiddle\, pedal steel\, banjo\, harmonica\, mandolin and upright bass alongside guitar and drums. \nThat broader musical palette gives the band room to move. \nA song can begin in traditional country territory before the guitars push it toward southern rock\, while another can lean into the acoustic textures of bluegrass and roots music. \nIt’s also what separates a Nick Bosse solo appearance from a Northern Roots show. The songs remain at the center\, but the full band is built for a Friday night crowd. \nFrom the Wolf Den to the Woods\nThe Charlestown concert comes during a particularly good two-night run for Bosse and the band. \nOn Thursday\, August 27\, Nick Bosse & The Northern Roots perform a free concert at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun. \nTwenty-four hours later\, they cross the Rhode Island state line and head into the woods at the Charlestown Rathskeller. \nThe settings couldn’t be much more different. \nThe Wolf Den sits in the middle of the Casino of the Earth at one of New England’s largest entertainment resorts. The Rathskeller offers an outdoor stage behind a historic tavern surrounded by trees\, with a backyard bar\, food\, games and a bonfire nearby. \nSame band. Very different Friday night. \nFrom a 1933 Speakeasy to a Charlestown Landmark\nThe Charlestown Rathskeller has its own story. \nThe tavern dates to 1933 and traces its beginnings to a speakeasy\, giving the property nearly a century of history as a gathering place in Charlestown. \nRemnants of that past remain inside\, including old murals in the dining room\, but the modern Rathskeller has expanded well beyond the original tavern. \nIts wooded property has become a warm-weather destination for food\, drinks\, outdoor games and live music. \nGuests coming for Friday’s concert can arrive early for dinner and drinks before heading out back for the show. \nHead “Down Back”\nThe Rathskeller calls its outdoor entertainment area “Down Back.” \nRather than a conventional theater or nightclub\, the space feels more like a sprawling backyard gathering built around live music. \nThere’s an outdoor stage\, backyard bar and burger shack\, along with a bonfire and lawn games including cornhole and bocce. \nThroughout the warmer months\, the Rathskeller uses Down Back for regional country\, rock\, tribute and party bands. \nIt’s difficult to imagine a much more natural setting for The Northern Roots. \nA country band with southern rock and bluegrass running through its music gets a stage in the woods\, a crowd with drinks in hand and three hours to stretch out. \nA Growing New England Following\nBosse has steadily expanded his audience beyond southeastern Connecticut. \nHis performances have included headlining appearances at both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods\, along with shows at festivals and venues throughout the region. He has also been recognized as Male Performer of the Year by the New England Music Awards. \nBut the band’s local and regional shows remain a major part of its identity. \nThat makes the Rathskeller date less about a Connecticut musician visiting Rhode Island and more about a regional act playing in its own backyard. The state line is only a few miles away\, and The Northern Roots have drawn musicians and audiences from both Connecticut and Rhode Island. \nDinner First\, Boots Later\nThe Friday-night setup makes this an easy event to turn into an evening rather than simply a three-hour concert. \nThe Rathskeller encourages concertgoers to arrive early for dinner and drinks before heading Down Back for the performance. \nAdvance tickets cost $15 plus fees. Those records weren’t created around a lone singer standing behind a microphone. Soul Sound Revue has a long history of appearances at the resort and returned to the Sun Patio as recently as the 2025 Party on the Sun Patio season. \nThe band’s 2026 calendar has kept it moving around Connecticut throughout the summer\, with appearances in Southington\, Bloomfield\, Avon\, Waterford\, New Britain\, Hamden\, Wallingford\, East Hartford and other communities before the August 28 Mohegan Sun date. \nFrom Motown to Funk\nFor anyone wondering what “Motown tribute” means musically\, expect the boundaries to be fairly loose. \nThe foundation comes from the Detroit sound that produced some of the most recognizable records of the 1960s and early ’70s: strong melodies\, layered vocal harmonies\, driving bass lines and songs designed to make people move. \nSoul Sound Revue then follows that music into the funkier sounds that came afterward. \nEarth\, Wind & Fire fits naturally into that progression\, as does the later work of Stevie Wonder.
