SUMMARY:Napatree Investigators Program
DESCRIPTION:Napatree Investigators Program gives children ages 7 to 13 the opportunity to explore one of Rhode Island’s most remarkable coastal environments through hands-on learning and outdoor discovery. Hosted by the Watch Hill Conservancy\, the summer series invites young nature enthusiasts to spend their mornings investigating the habitats\, wildlife\, and ecosystems that make Napatree Point such a unique conservation area. \nRegister for free by clicking the website link at the bottom of this page. \nEach week focuses on a different conservation theme\, allowing participants to discover everything from tidal pools and crabbing to lagoon exploration\, seining\, beach combing\, and clamming. Guided by the Conservancy’s naturalists\, children will learn through direct observation and exploration while developing a deeper appreciation for the shoreline and its natural resources. \nFamilies can register for a single session\, several weeks\, or the entire program. Because all sessions within a given week cover the same theme\, organizers ask that children register for only one day per week. Participants will also receive a custom program t-shirt as a keepsake from their summer adventures at Napatree Point. \nProgram Themes \nWeek 1: Tidal Pools\nJuly 7\, 8\, 9 \nWeek 2: Crabbing\nJuly 14\, 15\, 16 \nWeek 3: Lagoon Exploration\nJuly 21\, 22\, 23 \nWeek 4: Seining\nJuly 28\, 29\, 30 \nWeek 5: Beach Combing\nAugust 4\, 5\, 6 \nWeek 6: Clamming\nAugust 11\, 12\, 13 \nAdditional Information \n\nAges 7-13\nRegistration required\nAttend one session\, multiple weeks\, or the full series\nOne registration per child per week requested\nLed by Watch Hill Conservancy naturalists\nIncludes commemorative program t-shirt\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Mushroom Foraging Workshop with The Mushroom Hunting Foundation at DPNC
DESCRIPTION:Mushroom Foraging Workshop with The Mushroom Hunting Foundation at DPNC takes participants from forest trail to frying pan during a four-hour hands-on class in Mystic on Saturday\, August 15. The workshop begins with an introduction to wild mushrooms before heading into the woods with experienced foragers to search for edible species\, then returns for a cooking demonstration showing how a successful morning’s discoveries can become dinner. \nThis isn’t simply a guided hike where somebody points at mushrooms along the trail. The $125 half-day workshop is designed to teach the process behind responsible mushroom foraging: how to look\, what physical characteristics matter when identifying fungi\, which mushrooms beginning foragers should avoid\, and how edible wild mushrooms can be prepared in the kitchen. \nThe instructors come from The Mushroom Hunting Foundation\, a Southern New England organization devoted to teaching safe mushroom and wild-plant foraging. Its programs combine classroom instruction\, guided hunts and cooking demonstrations\, an approach that fits naturally with the forests and trails surrounding the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center. (Mushroom Hunting) \nFrom Trail to Table\nThe workshop begins indoors with a brief slideshow preparing participants for what they’ll encounter outside. \nThat’s more important than it might sound. Mushroom identification depends on details that are easy for an inexperienced person to overlook. Color and overall shape are only part of the picture. \nOne example is what’s underneath the cap. Mushrooms that look remarkably similar from above can have gills\, pores or tiny tooth-like structures underneath\, placing them in entirely different groups. Learning to slow down and examine those characteristics is part of becoming a safer forager. \nAfter the introduction\, the class heads onto DPNC’s trails. \nRather than simply collecting whatever happens to appear\, instructors will show participants how experienced mushroom hunters scan the woods\, recognize promising habitats and examine specimens before attempting an identification. \nWhat turns up will depend on what the forest produces that week. That’s the unpredictable part of foraging: there isn’t a produce aisle waiting at the end of the trail. \nMeet The Mushroom Hunting Foundation\nThe Mushroom Hunting Foundation grew from the work of Rhode Island natives Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt\, who began mushroom hunting after taking a class with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. \nWhat started as a hobby became a much deeper study of mycology\, wild foods and the ecological roles played by fungi. The pair eventually began sharing what they had learned through presentations\, guided foraging walks and culinary demonstrations. (Mushroom Hunting) \nToday\, the Mushroom Hunting Foundation offers educational programs built around safely enjoying wild mushrooms and edible plants. Classes range from introductory programs to more intensive field experiences and private instruction. \nThe emphasis on safe identification matters. \nSome mushroom groups contain both edible and dangerous species\, and look-alikes can make casual identification risky. The Foundation encourages beginners to concentrate first on species with characteristics that make reliable identification easier rather than immediately attempting difficult mushrooms with potentially dangerous doubles. (Mushroom Hunting) \nWhat Could You Find?\nAugust can produce an interesting assortment of mushrooms in Southern New England\, but there’s no predetermined shopping list. \nWeather\, rainfall\, temperature and the condition of the forest all affect what’s fruiting on any particular day. \nThe Mushroom Hunting Foundation has documented regional species ranging from edible Green-Quilted Russulas to the unusual Apricot Jelly mushroom\, a soft\, gelatinous edible fungus that can absorb the flavors it’s cooked with. \nFinding something\, however\, isn’t the same as deciding it’s dinner. \nOne of the most useful lessons in a workshop like this is learning when not to eat a mushroom. Identification should be based on multiple characteristics and reliable knowledge rather than comparing something found in the woods with a photograph. \nInto the Kitchen\nThe final portion of the workshop moves from identification to preparation. \nParticipants will watch a cooking demonstration focused on turning safely identified wild mushrooms into food. The Mushroom Hunting Foundation incorporates culinary instruction into its programs because understanding a mushroom doesn’t end when it’s identified. Different species can have very different flavors and textures and may require different preparation techniques. \nThat’s what gives this particular workshop its “trail to table” character. \nYou begin by learning what you’re looking for\, search for it in the forest and finish by seeing what can happen in the kitchen. \nA Good Place to Learn Foraging\nThe Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center provides a fitting outdoor classroom. \nThe Nature Center is located at 109 Pequotsepos Road in Mystic and maintains a network of trails through southeastern Connecticut woodland and wetland habitats. DPNC regularly uses those natural areas for environmental education\, guided walks and foraging programs. \nMushroom education isn’t new here\, either. DPNC has previously hosted Mushroom Hunting Foundation programs\, including a Mushroom Foraging Intensive in August 2025. \nThe Nature Center itself is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, so the workshop begins shortly after the facility opens. \nWhat to Wear and Bring\nParticipants should dress for several hours split between indoor instruction and hiking through the woods. \nWear sturdy\, closed-toe walking or hiking shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. Long pants can be useful when moving through wooded areas\, and insect repellent is worth considering in August. \nBecause the workshop involves mushroom hunting rather than staying exclusively on a maintained walking path\, expect uneven natural terrain and some time spent stopping\, bending down and closely examining the forest floor. \nWeather conditions can also change what the group encounters\, so check the forecast before leaving home. \nWho Should Attend?\nThe workshop is best suited to adults and older participants interested in learning mushroom foraging as a skill rather than simply taking a nature walk. \nNo previous mushroom-hunting experience is listed as a requirement. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of observation and identification\, while people who have already started exploring wild mushrooms can benefit from working directly with experienced instructors in the field. \nThe four-hour format allows considerably more time for instruction than a typical guided mushroom walk. \nEvent Details\nDate\nSaturday\, August 15\, 2026 \nTime\n9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. \nLocation\nDenison Pequotsepos Nature Center \nAddress\n109 Pequotsepos Road\nMystic\, CT 06355 \nAdmission\n$125 \nDuration\nApproximately four hours \nInstructors\nThe Mushroom Hunting Foundation \nProgram Includes\nIntroductory slideshow\, guided mushroom-foraging hike and cooking demonstration. \nExperience Level\nNo previous mushroom-foraging experience is listed as required. \nWhat to Wear\nSturdy closed-toe walking or hiking shoes and clothing appropriate for several hours outdoors. Long pants and insect repellent are recommended for woodland conditions. \nImportant Note\nNever consume a wild mushroom based solely on an identification made from a photograph\, app or casual comparison. The workshop teaches identification techniques under the guidance of experienced foragers. \nMore Information\nFor ticket purchases\, click on the Ticketing link below. \n\n

Guests can move through rope bridges\, zip lines\, and aerial obstacles while surrounded by shifting lights that make the entire park feel almost dreamlike after dark. The experience leans heavily into the fun of summer nights arriving early\, blending adrenaline and playful energy in a way that feels especially geared toward groups of friends\, couples\, teens\, and adventurous families looking for something different to do on a Friday night. \nThe event has become one of TreeTrails’ most popular seasonal experiences\, especially as warmer weather returns to the Connecticut shoreline region. SUMMARY:Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways at Mystic Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways at Mystic Museum of Art explores the history of textiles in southeastern Connecticut\, tracing how fabrics\, fashion\, and craftsmanship have shaped the region from the precolonial era through the present day. On view from June 26 through October 11\, 2026\, the exhibition brings together historic artifacts and contemporary works to examine how textiles reflect labor\, immigration\, cultural identity\, and changing ideas of luxury. \nInspired by southeastern Connecticut’s once-thriving velvet industry\, the exhibition features a collaboration between Mystic Museum of Art\, Historic Stonington\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\, Mystic Seaport Museum\, and the Connecticut Region of the Studio Art Quilt Associates. Visitors will encounter an extensive collection of beadwork\, embroidery\, quilts\, velvet\, fashion\, and textile art drawn from partner institutions and the museum’s own collection. \nThe exhibition also highlights contemporary fashion designers with Connecticut connections\, including Xarea Lockhart\, Toriana Sauro\, Christian Siriano\, and Peter Som. Their work connects the region’s textile heritage with modern fashion\, demonstrating how clothing and material culture continue to influence art\, identity\, and design. Throughout the exhibition\, the museum will present lectures\, artist conversations\, and hands-on workshops that further explore these themes. \nExhibition Details\n\nExhibition: Luxe CT: Velvet Mills to Modern Runways\nVenue: Mystic Museum of Art\nDates: June 26-October 11\, 2026\nLocation: Mystic\, CT\n\nExhibition Highlights\nVisitors will experience: \n\ns\nWorks from Mystic Museum of Art’s permanent collection\nLoans from regional museums and organizations\n\nFeatured Partners\nThe exhibition includes contributions from: \n\nHistoric Stonington\nMashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center\nMystic Seaport Museum\nStudio Art Quilt Associates\, Connecticut Region\n\nFeatured Designers\nThe exhibition showcases work by designers with Connecticut ties\, including: \n\nXarea Lockhart\nToriana Sauro\nChristian Siriano\nPeter Som\n\nAdmission\n\nGeneral Admission: $12\nNew London County residents: $10\nSeniors (65+): $10\nStudents with valid ID: $10\nFree:\n\nMystic Museum of Art members\nYouth ages 17 and under\nMilitary personnel and veterans\n\n\n\nExhibition Programs\nPublic programs are held on select Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. \nTuesday\, July 7\nMystic Mudlarking: The River and the Rossie Velvet Mill \n\nGuest speaker: Mary Hendrickson\n\nTuesday\, July 21\nImmigration and Industry \n\nGuest speaker: Chelsea Mitchell\, Library Director & Collections Manager\, Historic Stonington\n\nTuesday\, September 1\nConversation with Alana Ryder and Emerging Designers \nFeaturing: \n\nAlana Ryder\nXarea Lockhart\nToriana Sauro\n\nWorkshops\nAll workshops take place in KTJ Studios. \nSaturday\, September 19\nFrom Textile to Art: Felt Collage Workshop \nSaturday\, September 26\nIntroduction to Sewing Workshop \n\nFeatured designer: Toriana Sauro\n\nSaturday\, October 10\nRelief Printing on Silk Scarf Workshop \nWhy Visit\nLuxe CT examines how textiles have connected communities across centuries while reflecting the region’s history of manufacturing\, immigration\, craftsmanship\, and artistic innovation. SUMMARY:Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO Bricks
DESCRIPTION:Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO Bricks drops visitors into centuries of maritime mystery and disaster at Mystic Seaport Museum.. The internationally touring exhibition combines massive LEGO® ship recreations with real maritime history\, creating an experience that feels part museum exhibit\, part interactive adventure. As the first American stop for the exhibition\, Mystic Seaport becomes the latest host for a showcase that has previously appeared at major maritime museums in Europe and Australia. \nThe exhibit features eleven detailed LEGO® models recreating famous shipwrecks and maritime disasters spanning thousands of years\, including the Titanic\, the Vasa\, Franklin’s Arctic expedition ships Terror and Erebus\, and the ancient Uluburun trading vessel. Created in partnership with LEGO® Certified Professional Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught\, the displays combine historical storytelling with surprisingly intricate engineering and visual detail. Some models even include cross-section cutaways revealing what happened beneath the waterline. \nInteractive experiences throughout the exhibit invite visitors to test survival scenarios\, operate a remote underwater vehicle\, experiment with ship stability\, and build LEGO® creations of their own. Alongside the models are replica artifacts\, archaeological tools\, and multimedia displays exploring how modern researchers investigate shipwrecks and what those discoveries reveal about trade\, exploration\, disaster\, and human history. The result is an exhibit that works equally well for families\, history buffs\, LEGO® fans\, and anyone who still secretly wants to touch every museum display. \n

As shops\, beaches\, and restaurants fill with early summer crowds\, the opening of the Merry-Go-Round marks another sign that the season is fully underway in SW Rhode Island. \nBelieved to have been built in 1867 by Andrew Christian and the Charles W.F. Dare Co. of New York City\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round is widely considered the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States. Local legend says a traveling carnival brought the carousel to Watch Hill in 1883 before abandoning it\, allowing the ride to become a permanent part of the village itself. Over the decades\, the carousel survived major storms\, including the devastating Hurricane of 1938\, while remaining one of the area’s most enduring landmarks. \nToday\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round continues to deliver the same nostalgic charm that has drawn families to it for generations. The hand-carved horses\, historic structure\, and coastal surroundings create an experience that feels timeless against the backdrop of Watch Hill’s beaches and waterfront streets. For many visitors\, a ride on the carousel remains one of the defining traditions of summer along the Rhode Island coast. \n

SUMMARY:Dogstar ALL IN NOW TOUR with Special Guest The Backfires at Great Cedar Showroom
DESCRIPTION:Dogstar ALL IN NOW TOUR with Special Guest The Backfires at Great Cedar Showroom brings Keanu Reeves back to the stage in his other career on Saturday\, August 15\, when Dogstar arrives at Foxwoods Resort Casino for an 8 p.m. performance. Reeves plays bass alongside guitarist and vocalist Bret Domrose and drummer Robert Mailhouse in the Southern California alternative-rock trio\, with New York indie-rock band The Backfires opening the night. (Foxwoods) \nDogstar isn’t a celebrity side project assembled around Reeves. The band dates to the early 1990s\, released two albums during its original run\, toured internationally and opened shows for artists including David Bowie and Bon Jovi before going dormant after 2000. More than two decades later\, Reeves\, Domrose and Mailhouse reunited\, returned to the studio and released Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees in 2023. (Fallsview Casino Resort) \nThe Foxwoods stop pairs that comeback story with a much younger rock band on its own climb. The Backfires formed between London and New York\, released their debut album This Is Not An Exit in 2025 and have since moved from small clubs to festivals and national touring. The Great Cedar Showroom puts both bands into a relatively intimate room: Foxwoods lists the venue at about 1\,400 seats\, considerably smaller than the resort’s 4\,000-seat Premier Theater. (Spotify) \nAbout Dogstar\nDogstar began in Los Angeles in the early 1990s with Reeves on bass and Mailhouse on drums. Bret Domrose eventually became the group’s principal singer\, guitarist and songwriter\, establishing the trio that continues today. \nDuring its original run\, the band found itself routinely labeled grunge\, an understandable classification given the decade but one the musicians don’t think completely captured what they were doing. Dogstar’s music has always leaned heavily on melody and storytelling\, with Domrose’s songwriting drawing from an older singer-songwriter tradition as much as the louder alternative rock surrounding the band in the ’90s. \nThe group released Our Little Visionary in 1996 and Happy Ending in 2000 before the members went their separate ways. \nThen\, after roughly two decades apart\, something clicked again. \nReeves\, Domrose and Mailhouse began playing together privately\, rediscovered the chemistry that had held the band together and started writing. Instead of building a nostalgia tour around their old material\, they recorded an entirely new album. \nSomewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees\nDogstar’s reunion produced Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees in 2023\, its first album in 23 years. \nThe record reflects a band that no longer has much reason to worry about fitting into a particular rock category. Reeves has described its appeal in terms of the variety between songs\, with different tones and influences emerging across the album rather than every track chasing the same sound. \nThat makes the current version of Dogstar more interesting than a simple ’90s revival. Older songs are part of the band’s history\, but the reunion has produced a functioning creative band with new material to play. \nThe ALL IN NOW TOUR continues that second chapter. \nYes\, That’s Keanu Reeves on Bass\nThere’s no avoiding the obvious question for anyone discovering Dogstar through the Foxwoods listing. \nYes. It’s that Keanu Reeves. \nBut Reeves’ involvement in music isn’t new. He was playing bass with Dogstar while his acting career was exploding in the 1990s\, and the band’s original years overlapped with films including Speed and The Matrix. \nWithin Dogstar\, however\, Reeves doesn’t front the group or turn the concert into a showcase built around his movie career. He’s the bassist. Domrose handles lead vocals and guitar\, Mailhouse plays drums\, and the three operate as a conventional rock trio. \nThat dynamic has remained intact since the reunion. \nSpecial Guest The Backfires\nOpening the Foxwoods show is The Backfires\, a transatlantic rock band whose story began in London in 2018. \nSinger and guitarist Alex Gomez moved from New York to London to study and met guitarist Harry Ruprecht and drummer Max Wanduragala there. Gomez’s childhood friend Matt Walter joined on bass\, and the musicians began developing a band split between two countries just before the pandemic made that arrangement considerably more complicated. (47Magazine & Media) \nBy early 2022\, The Backfires had relocated to New York and began concentrating on building their live show. A sold-out Mercury Lounge debut was followed by touring with acts including Silversun Pickups\, Courteeners and The Mysterines. (Spotify) \nThe band released its debut full-length album\, This Is Not An Exit\, in January 2025 and followed it with a 29-date North American headline tour. The Backfires also moved onto festival stages\, including Governors Ball. (Spotify) \nTheir music falls into guitar-driven indie and alternative rock\, with British influences particularly apparent. Songs including “Blindsided\,” “Joyride\,” “Brighter Lights” and “Super 8” offer a good starting point before the Foxwoods show. (Apple Music – Web Player) \nTwo Generations of Alternative Rock\nThe pairing makes sense. \nDogstar came together during the alternative-rock explosion of the 1990s but often found itself slightly outside the sound of the decade. The Backfires formed more than 25 years later with influences drawn partly from the British guitar bands that followed that era. \nBoth ultimately center their music on guitars\, melody and songs rather than elaborate production. \nThe Backfires aren’t making a one-off appearance at Foxwoods\, either. They’re accompanying Dogstar on multiple dates of the ALL IN NOW TOUR\, including stops in Washington\, Atlantic City\, Mashantucket\, Boston\, Hershey and cities across the country. (www.livenation.my) \nAbout the Great Cedar Showroom\nThe Great Cedar Showroom offers a substantially different concert experience from Foxwoods’ larger Premier Theater. \nFoxwoods lists the Great Cedar as an approximately 1\,400-seat venue\, compared with 4\,000 seats at the Premier Theater. That makes it one of the resort’s more intimate rooms for nationally touring musicians and comedians. (Foxwoods) \nThe Showroom sits within the Great Cedar section of the resort\, near the Great Cedar Casino and hotel. Foxwoods’ current property map places it close to the Grand Pequot area as well. (Foxwoods) \nFor this performance\, Foxwoods recommends parking at the Grand Pequot Tower. \nBefore the Show\nGuests looking to make dinner part of the evening have numerous options throughout Foxwoods. \nOne of the closest is Cedars Steaks & Oysters\, located on the Great Cedar Concourse just steps from the Great Cedar Hotel elevators and near the Showroom. Reservations are recommended\, particularly on event nights. (Foxwoods) \nAllow some extra time between dinner and the concert for security and finding your seats. \nEvent Details\nDate\nSaturday\, August 15\, 2026 \nTime\n8:00 p.m. \nHeadliner\nDogstar \nSpecial Guest\nThe Backfires \nTour\nALL IN NOW TOUR \nLocation\nGreat Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods Resort Casino \nAddress\n39 Norwich Westerly Road\nMashantucket\, CT 06338 \nVenue Size\nApproximately 1\,400 seats. \nBest Parking\nGrand Pequot Tower. \nBags and Purses\nShopping bags and backpacks are not permitted.
