As shops\, beaches\, and restaurants fill with early summer crowds\, the opening of the Merry-Go-Round marks another sign that the season is fully underway in SW Rhode Island. \nBelieved to have been built in 1867 by Andrew Christian and the Charles W.F. Dare Co. of New York City\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round is widely considered the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States. Local legend says a traveling carnival brought the carousel to Watch Hill in 1883 before abandoning it\, allowing the ride to become a permanent part of the village itself. Dare Co. of New York City\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round is widely considered the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States. Local legend says a traveling carnival brought the carousel to Watch Hill in 1883 before abandoning it\, allowing the ride to become a permanent part of the village itself. He played guitar with David Crosby and contributed to Crosby’s Sky Trails album. His career includes work with David Crosby\, Roger Waters and Ambrosia. \nTeresa James\, singer and pianist with The Rhythm Tramps\, adds another lead voice to the ensemble. \nMichael Visceglia plays bass and is known for his longtime work with Suzanne Vega. \nClint de Ganon handles drums\, with a résumé that includes work with Stevie Wonder and Art Garfunkel. It’s the foundation. \nThe Music of CSNY\nCrosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young created a remarkably deep catalog despite spending relatively little time together as a four-member group. \nDavid Crosby\, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash released their first album as Crosby\, Stills & Nash in 1969. Neil Young joined shortly afterward\, and Déjà Vu followed in 1970. \nThe combination produced some of the defining music of its era\, blending folk\, rock\, country and intricate vocal harmony with songs that could be intensely personal one moment and openly political the next. \nOur House draws from that larger catalog rather than a single album or period. \nThe New London program is expected to include classics such as “Déjà Vu\,” “Wooden Ships\,” “Helpless” and “Carry On.” (Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce) \nThat opens a considerable amount of musical territory\, from acoustic harmonies and reflective songwriting to electric guitar-driven rock. \nHenry Diltz: The Stories Behind the Photographs\nThere’s another member of the production who doesn’t play an instrument. \nHenry Diltz was there with a camera. \nThe legendary rock photographer documented many of the musicians who defined the Laurel Canyon era and photographed the cover of Crosby\, Stills & Nash’s 1969 debut album. \nFor Our House\, Diltz contributes photographs and stories that appear as part of the performance\, turning portions of the concert into a visual history of the musicians and the world surrounding the songs. \nThat makes the evening part concert and part firsthand remembrance. Instead of simply hearing music from the period\, audiences see images created by someone who was standing nearby when much of that history was happening. \nThe Garde Turns 100\nThe concert arrives at a particularly appropriate moment for the Garde Arts Center. \nThe Garde Theatre opened on September 22\, 1926\, originally presenting both movies and vaudeville. Built during the golden age of American movie palaces\, the theater became known for its elaborate Moroccan-inspired interior. The restoration preserved one of Connecticut’s few surviving movie palaces while transforming it into a modern performing arts venue. \nToday\, the Garde is again an anchor of downtown New London\, presenting concerts\, theater\, comedy\, film and community programs. Bon Jovi\, Def Leppard\, Van Halen\, Journey\, Mötley Crüe\, and other staples of ’80s rock all feed into a performance that combines the songs with the clothes\, stage personalities\, and over-the-top attitude of the decade. \nThe Wolf Den should be an especially good fit. It’s an intimate room compared with the arenas where much of this music was born\, putting the audience close to the band for what is essentially an ’80s rock party in the middle of Mohegan Sun’s Casino of the Earth. Admission is free\, but seating is limited and first come\, first served. \nAbout Mullett\nMullett has been performing its tribute to 1980s rock since 2010\, appearing at casinos\, theaters\, clubs\, corporate events\, festivals\, and other venues around the country. \nRather than recreating a particular concert or impersonating one famous band\, Mullett pulls from the larger arena-rock era. The band’s approach combines faithful musical performances with the visual excess that went with them: big hair\, leather\, spandex\, guitar theatrics\, and larger-than-life stage characters. \nThe current lineup performs under names that leave little doubt about the joke: \nSebastian Rock – Lead Vocals\nDan Halen – Guitar and Keyboards\nTeddy Lee – Bass\nJef Leppard – Drums \nBehind the fictional rock-star personas are experienced touring musicians. Sebastian Rock previously spent years performing as Steve Perry in a Journey tribute\, while the other members bring backgrounds in touring and live performance to a show that demands more than simply knowing the songs. \nWhat You’ll Hear\nMullett’s show reaches across the big-rock landscape of the 1980s. \nExpect music associated with Bon Jovi\, Def Leppard\, Van Halen\, Journey\, Mötley Crüe and other bands that dominated rock radio\, MTV\, and arenas during the decade. \nThat range lets the show move between soaring Journey-style vocals\, pop-metal hooks\, heavier guitar riffs\, and the kind of songs where the audience usually knows the chorus before the microphone gets pointed in its direction. \nThe presentation matters\, too. Vallee later played guitar on recordings and tours with legendary E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons. \nKeyboardist and vocalist Frank Rapone is also a Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame inductee as a founding member of Steve Smith & The Nakeds. Like Vallee\, Rapone performed behind Clemons during his work outside Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Rapone and Vallee came together in 2019 to form the current Earl Knightwood lineup. \nMeet the Band\nPaula Clare handles lead vocals. Before settling in Rhode Island\, Clare lived in Chicago and Los Angeles and worked as an actress in film and television. She later returned to music as a singer and songwriter. \nChris O’Donnell handles drums and vocals. His background includes study with jazz musicians Ernie Watts and Jerry Bergonzi\, along with work as a drummer and arranger with The Duende Project. \nDave McCarthy brings a classical contrabass background to the electric bass\, but his playing with Earl Knightwood moves from New Orleans grooves to Memphis-style soul. That’s made the band a regular choice for events where the job isn’t simply to play familiar songs but to keep a crowd dancing. \nThere’s considerable experience behind that party-band exterior. \nFounding member Joe Grieco has performed on recordings by artists including Phoebe Snow and Big Al Anderson\, while guitarist Tom Majesky toured with Grayson Hugh and has appeared on NBC’s Today. Saxophonist and trumpeter Bill Holloman has recorded or performed with an extraordinary range of artists\, including Bruce Springsteen\, Paul Simon\, Diana Ross\, Steve Winwood\, Elton John and Steven Tyler. \nVocalist and percussionist Karin Barth-Tyska previously toured with Connecticut swing band Eight to the Bar before helping form The Cartells. His 2026 schedule has included performances at Dean’s Mill Farm\, Saltwater Farm Vineyard and Kingdom of the Hawk Vineyard\, with another appearance scheduled for Stonington Vineyards later in August. \nThe Sunday Jam setting fits the music particularly well. This isn’t a concert where everybody needs to sit silently facing the stage. Saturday night\, he’s leading his band at a vineyard. By Sunday afternoon\, he’s back near the Rhode Island shoreline playing a beach bar. \nLive Music Steps from Misquamicut Beach\nThe Windjammer has been part of the Misquamicut summer scene for generations. \nIt’s housed within Atlantic Beach Park\, which traces its history to 1921 and remains owned and operated by the Trefes family. Originally called Atlantic Beach Casino\, the property developed as a place where families could swim\, gather along the boardwalk and spend a summer day beside the ocean. \nToday\, the Windjammer combines that old beach-park setting with an oceanfront restaurant\, bar and live music venue. \nIts large patio sits directly beside the Atlantic\, with tables\, umbrellas and Adirondack chairs outside. During the summer\, live music is scheduled on the patio from 1 to 5 p.m.\, making Bosse’s 1 p.m. start part of a tradition rather than a one-off concert setup. \nThe indoor Surf Bar adds another 1\,000 square feet\, including a 30-seat bar\, surfing décor and a sound and lighting system used for entertainment throughout the season. \nMake It a Beach Afternoon\nThis is one of those shows where the venue changes the experience. \nArrive earlier and spend some time at Misquamicut. Come in from the beach for lunch. Its auditioned A Band Called PoP\, for example\, includes students from high schools across southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut and combines music education with leadership\, planning and collaborative decision-making. \nThe school also operates Youth On-the-Mic at the Knick Music Lab\, giving students in grades 6 through 12 a supportive place to perform for an audience. The program is now in its seventh year. \nThe Summer Jazz Performance follows the same basic idea: music is learned in rehearsal\, but eventually it’s meant to be played for somebody. \nAn Afternoon of Student Jazz\nJazz is particularly well suited to ensemble education. \nStudents have to listen to one another\, keep time\, understand their place within an arrangement and react to what the musicians around them are doing. The Knickerbocker has been associated with live music in Westerly for generations\, particularly blues and jazz. The Knickerbocker All Stars\, for example\, take their name and inspiration from the venue’s history of hosting prominent jazz and blues musicians. \nToday\, UNITED uses the Knick as a creative hub for students and working artists\, hosting rehearsals\, recording\, masterclasses\, residencies\, teen programs and live performances. \nThat makes it a fitting rain location for a student jazz concert. \nAbout the UNITED\nThe UNITED itself is celebrating a major anniversary in 2026. \nThe theater first opened in Westerly as a vaudeville house in 1926 before eventually becoming a movie theater. It closed in 1986 and remained dark until a community effort began transforming the building and the neighboring former Montgomery Ward property into a modern arts complex. \nFollowing a major two-year renovation\, the UNITED reopened in July 2021. \nToday the complex includes a 750-capacity performance space\, three cinemas\, gallery and event space and the UNITED Music School. Its programming extends from concerts and independent film to theater\, dance and arts education. \nThe Music School’s summer performance takes that work out of the building and into the center of Westerly. \nAn Outdoor Concert in Wilcox Park\nWilcox Park sits in the heart of downtown Westerly\, adjacent to the Westerly Library and within walking distance of the UNITED. \nThe 1 p.m. start makes this an easy addition to a Sunday afternoon downtown.
