Sullivan and Nadler sing\, narrate and reenact moments from Berlin’s life\, weaving familiar standards and lesser-known songs into the story according to what was happening to him at the time. The result sits somewhere between cabaret\, musical theater and biography. \nAt its center is a love story that once made national headlines. \nIrving Berlin and Ellin Mackay\nBy the 1920s\, Irving Berlin had already risen from an impoverished immigrant childhood on New York’s Lower East Side to become one of America’s most successful songwriters. \nThen he fell in love with Ellin Mackay\, the daughter of wealthy financier Clarence Mackay. \nThere was a problem. Berlin was a Jewish immigrant who had grown up poor. Mackay was a Catholic heiress from one of America’s wealthiest families\, and her father strongly opposed the relationship. \nThe couple married in 1926 despite his objections. Berlin reportedly gave Ellin the royalties to his song “Always” as a wedding gift\, providing the title and emotional centerpiece for the show. \nTheir marriage lasted more than six decades\, until Ellin’s death in 1988. (The Love Story of Irving Berlin) \nBerlin’s Songs Tell the Story\nRather than stopping the story for a string of hits\, Always uses Berlin’s music as part of the narrative. \nSongs are performed in full or combined into medleys that follow different periods of Berlin’s life. The repertoire includes music associated with his romance with Ellin as well as his career\, his immigrant experience and his contributions during two World Wars. \nAmong the songs associated with the production are “Cheek to Cheek\,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance\,” “I Got Lost in His Arms\,” “Oh\, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning\,” “God Bless America” and\, naturally\, “Always.” \nIt’s quite a catalog to draw from. Berlin’s career stretched from Tin Pan Alley through Broadway and Hollywood\, producing songs that remained part of American popular culture long after the era in which they were written. \nThe production has received the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs Award for Outstanding Revue and was nominated for both Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel awards. \nKT Sullivan and Mark Nadler\nThe story is performed by two artists with deep roots in New York cabaret and the Great American Songbook. \nKT Sullivan starred on Broadway in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and spent more than two decades performing at the Oak Room at New York’s Algonquin Hotel. She has also performed at venues including Birdland in New York and Crazy Coqs in London and became artistic director of the Mabel Mercer Foundation in 2012. \nMark Nadler brings an unusually broad skill set to the other side of the stage. He’s a singer\, pianist\, comedian and tap dancer whose career has included Broadway\, Off-Broadway\, cabaret and concert performances. \nHis Off-Broadway production I’m a Stranger Here Myself earned a Drama Desk nomination\, and Nadler has appeared at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops as well as with orchestras around the country. His Broadway credits include Dame Edna: The Royal Tour. \nSullivan and Nadler have collaborated extensively\, particularly on shows built around the Great American Songbook\, which makes Always less a pairing of two performers than a production developed by artists who know how to play off one another. \nPart of the George Moore Cabaret Series\nThe Westerly performance is presented as part of the UNITED’s George Moore Cabaret Series\, bringing the production into the theater’s more intimate Black Box Auditorium. \nThat setting should fit this particular show especially well. Always isn’t built around elaborate scenery or a large ensemble. The venue regularly books emerging bands\, underground electronic acts and DJs rather than operating like a traditional concert hall. \nAbout Multiplier\nMultiplier comes out of the southeastern Connecticut music scene\, with its members playing together in different forms for more than a decade before formalizing the project. \nThe easiest way to understand them may be to start with the groove. \nHouse and EDM provide some of the foundation\, but Multiplier pulls in dub\, hip-hop\, trip-hop\, breakbeat and funk rather than staying inside one electronic genre. W.O.W. gets the room moving first. Hands stay behind the back while competitors attempt to finish half of a full-size pie using nothing but their mouths. \nIt’s going to get messy. \n4:00 p.m. — Milking Contest \n5:00 p.m. — Egg Toss \nSunday\n1:00 p.m. — Corn Shucking Contest \n2:00 p.m. — Senior Pie Eating Contest \n3:00 p.m. — Milking Contest \n4:00 p.m. — Egg Toss \nSome contests require advance registration\, generally one hour before the event\, and participation may be limited. \nStage ’67\nNeed a break from the midway? \nStage ’67 is dedicated to family entertainment throughout the fair. \nFarmer K: Stories From the Barnyard brings farm-themed storytelling to the stage on multiple days. \nThe Rhode Island Circus Space also performs throughout the five-day fair with circus arts and family entertainment. \nWeekend circus performances include: \nFriday: 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.\nSunday: 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. \nCome Hungry\nYou shouldn’t have much trouble finding something to eat. \nMore than 130 food and craft vendors participate in the Washington County Fair\, creating an enormous marketplace throughout the grounds. \nFair food ranges from Rhode Island and New England favorites to the classics you probably started thinking about the moment somebody mentioned going to the fair. \nExpect choices including: \n\nBurgers\nBarbecue\nSeafood\nSteak sandwiches\nStrawberry shortcake\nFresh-squeezed lemonade\nTraditional carnival food\nDesserts and sweet treats\n\nOne interesting detail: many of the food vendors are operated by nonprofit organizations\, so that plate of fair food may also be supporting a local group. \nMany food vendors accept cash only\, although ATMs are available on the fairgrounds. \nCoolers and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. \nDon’t Skip the Exhibit Buildings\nThe exhibit buildings are easy to overlook when there’s a midway glowing outside. \nGo inside anyway. \nThis is where you’ll find the quieter side of county-fair competition: vegetables grown in someone’s backyard\, carefully arranged flowers\, photography\, quilts\, needlework\, ceramics\, crafts\, canned goods\, baking entries\, and other projects competing for ribbons. \nThere’s also a 4-H Exhibit Hall where young people display projects ranging from agriculture and animal care to gardening and other skills. \nThese exhibits may not have flashing lights. \nThey don’t need them. \nThey’re part of what separates a county fair from a summer carnival. \nNearly 60 Years of Washington County Fair History\nThe Washington County Fair began in 1967 on the grounds of the Perryville Grange in Wakefield. \nIt was created to emphasize the importance of agriculture in everyday life while reviving the traditional county fair experience. \nIt didn’t take long to outgrow its original home. \nAfter only two years\, organizers purchased land in Richmond. The property included a stand of pine trees on a sloping hill that organizers envisioned as a natural amphitheater. \nThere was just one problem. \nThey had to build practically everything. \nLand needed clearing. Boulders had to be removed. Booths had to be constructed. A stage had to be built. \nGrange members and other volunteers did much of the work themselves. \nThat volunteer tradition continues today. The Washington County Fair is owned and operated by the Washington County Pomona Grange\, and organizers begin preparing for the next fair almost as soon as the previous one ends. \nOver the decades\, the grounds have expanded to include additional pulling rings\, livestock facilities\, exhibit spaces\, and an agricultural museum filled with equipment and artifacts from Rhode Island’s farming past. \nThe midway has gotten bigger. \nThe concerts have gotten bigger. \nBut the goal hasn’t changed much since 1967: create an authentic county fair where families can experience a piece of Rhode Island’s agricultural heritage. \nAdmission\nAdults and ages 11+: $14 at the gate \nChildren 10 and under: FREE \nGate admission includes: \n\nMain Stage concerts\nSpecial entertainment\nAgricultural events\nLivestock shows\nExhibits and displays\nContests\nTractor pulls\nHorse and livestock pulls\nFarm museum admission\n\nMidway rides require separate tickets or wristbands. \nGate purchases are cash only. \nSame-day re-entry is permitted with a hand stamp. \nThe Washington County Fair is held rain or shine. \nParking\nParking is free. \nDesignated parking is available at the fairgrounds\, with additional off-site lots used during busy periods. \nThe Beaver River off-site lot operates: \nThursday & Friday: 4:00 p.m. to close\nSaturday & Sunday: 12:00 p.m. to close \nShuttle service is available from the Beaver River lot. \nThe final shuttle from the fairgrounds generally leaves approximately 30 minutes after the Main Stage concert. \nAccessible parking is available near the fair entrance for vehicles displaying the appropriate placard. \nVisitors should follow fair staff and parking attendants rather than parking on surrounding private property or in undesignated areas. \nWhat to Know Before You Go\nA few things can make the day easier: \n\nBring cash. Look at the vegetables somebody grew well enough to earn a blue ribbon. As shops\, beaches\, and restaurants fill with early summer crowds\, the opening of the Merry-Go-Round marks another sign that the season is fully underway in SW Rhode Island. \nBelieved to have been built in 1867 by Andrew Christian and the Charles W.F. Dare Co. of New York City\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round is widely considered the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States. Local legend says a traveling carnival brought the carousel to Watch Hill in 1883 before abandoning it\, allowing the ride to become a permanent part of the village itself. Over the decades\, the carousel survived major storms\, including the devastating Hurricane of 1938\, while remaining one of the area’s most enduring landmarks. \nToday\, the Watch Hill Merry-Go-Round continues to deliver the same nostalgic charm that has drawn families to it for generations. DESCRIPTION:Sail with the Tall Ship Kalmar Nyckel in New London August 14–16 when the Tall Ship of Delaware arrives at New London City Pier for five public sailing trips on Long Island Sound. Rather than simply touring the ship at the dock\, passengers spend 2½ hours underway aboard a full-scale recreation of the 17th-century vessel that carried the first Swedish settlers to the Delaware Valley. \nThis is also a hands-on tall ship experience. Guests can help the crew raise sails and haul lines\, listen to stories about the ship and maritime life\, or find a place on deck and simply enjoy the trip. The exact sailing experience changes with the wind and conditions\, which is rather the point when you’re aboard a ship powered by canvas instead of following a sightseeing route on a motor vessel. \nFive sails are scheduled across three days\, including morning and afternoon trips Friday\, morning and late-afternoon trips Saturday\, and a final Sunday morning sail. Current booking information shows fares ranging from $40 for youth ages 12 and younger to $75 for adults\, with advance reservations recommended. (Kalmar Nyckel Booking) \nThe Ship That Helped Found New Sweden\nThe original Kalmar Nyckel played a remarkable role in early American history. \nIn 1637\, the ship left Europe as the flagship of an expedition led by Peter Minuit to establish a Swedish colony in North America. After crossing the Atlantic\, the expedition entered the Delaware River in March 1638 and established Fort Christina\, in what is now Wilmington\, Delaware. \nThat settlement became the beginning of New Sweden and the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. (Sea History Association) \nKalmar Nyckel wasn’t finished after that first crossing. The ship ultimately completed four round-trip Atlantic voyages between Sweden and North America\, more documented crossings than any other colonial ship of the period. \nThe original vessel later returned to naval and merchant service before being sunk during a battle with English forces in 1652. \nSailing Aboard a 17th-Century Ship\nThe Kalmar Nyckel visiting New London isn’t the original ship\, but neither is it a conventional modern tour boat dressed to look old. \nThe full-scale recreation was built by the nonprofit Kalmar Nyckel Foundation in Wilmington\, Delaware\, just downstream from the site where the original ship landed in 1638. It was launched in 1997 and commissioned the following year. \nThe ship is operated with the help of a large volunteer crew trained in traditional seamanship. That working-ship approach carries over to the public sails. \nPassengers who want to participate can lend a hand as the crew handles lines and raises sail. You don’t have to\, though. Ships like Kalmar Nyckel crossed an Atlantic without engines\, GPS\, weather radar or instant communication with shore. Wind\, navigation and the ability of a crew to work together determined whether a voyage succeeded. \nThe modern Kalmar Nyckel Foundation uses the ship as a floating classroom and educational platform\, reaching tens of thousands of people through sails\, school programs and other activities each year. Pirate Days explores stories such as these while introducing children to the difference between the pirates of popular culture and the people who actually sailed these waters centuries ago. \nA Historic Setting Dating to 1678\nThe Hempsted Houses are an attraction in their own right. \nThe Joshua Hempsted House\, built in 1678 with a later addition\, is one of New England’s oldest and best-documented surviving homes. Joshua Hempsted was born there and kept an extensive diary from 1711 until his death in 1758. His writings provide historians with an unusually detailed record of work\, family\, commerce\, and everyday life in colonial New London. \nBeside it stands the stone Nathaniel Hempsted House\, built in 1759 by Acadian exiles for Joshua’s grandson Nathaniel. Remarkably\, both houses survived the burning of New London by Benedict Arnold’s forces in 1781. \nThat means children attending Pirate Days aren’t experiencing colonial history against a reproduction backdrop. They’re playing and learning on grounds where people were living during the period being explored. \nThe Hempsted Houses Tell a Bigger Story\nThe history preserved here also extends well beyond the Hempsted family. \nJoshua Hempsted’s diary documents the life and labor of Adam Jackson\, a man of African descent whom Hempsted enslaved for more than three decades. Sinooka Productions launched the grassroots festival in 2022 at Highland Homestead\, the Main family farm at the end of Pawcatuck Avenue. Volunteers handle everything from parking to ticketing\, while local musicians provide the soundtrack. As attendance and community support have grown\, so has the event. What began as a DIY gathering has developed into a full weekend festival without losing the farm setting that makes it different. \nSaturday is the big day\, with music running from noon until 10 p.m. along with vendors\, raffles\, food\, and activities for all ages. Sunday slows things down a little but keeps the music going from noon until 5 p.m. Both days support a cause thousands of miles from Pawcatuck but closely aligned with FarmFest’s community-driven roots. \nTwo Days of Live Local Music\nMusic is at the center of FarmFest. \nThe festival focuses on Connecticut’s alternative\, indie\, and rock scene\, giving regional musicians an outdoor stage and audiences an opportunity to discover bands they might otherwise only encounter in clubs and smaller venues. \nAnd this isn’t a conventional festival stage. \nAt Highland Homestead\, the stage is constructed from two hay wagons overlooking a small pond. It’s one of those details that tells you almost everything you need to know about FarmFest. A network of volunteers helps operate the festival\, handling parking\, admissions\, and other jobs needed to keep the weekend running. \nThe charitable component has grown alongside the music. \nOver the previous two years\, FarmFest organizers say the festival raised more than $8\,000 for the PACS2 Research Foundation and Boston University’s Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Amyloidosis Center. The 2025 festival specifically supported the Amyloidosis Center. \nFor its fifth year\, FarmFest is directing its fundraising toward the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project. \nWhere the Money Goes in 2026\nAll proceeds from FarmFest 2026 will support the Chikumbuso Women & Orphans Project\, a grassroots community organization in Ng’ombe\, Zambia. \nThe organization began in 2005 with an effort to help seven women meeting in a one-room church. It later purchased a former bar and brothel and transformed the property into a community center and school. Today\, its work focuses on education\, skills training\, micro-enterprise\, and long-term support for women and children living in poverty. (Chikumbuso Project) \nChikumbuso now operates a K–7 community school and provides scholarships that help students continue through high school and college. Its programs serve hundreds of children each year. \nThe organization’s work extends well beyond the classroom. Its vocational program has trained more than 300 young people in tailoring and small-business skills\, while its micro-enterprise programs help widows and single mothers earn income through handcrafted goods.
