SUMMARY:64th Annual John & Jessie Kelley Half Marathon
DESCRIPTION:64th Annual John & Jessie Kelley Half Marathon returns to Ocean Beach Park in New London on Saturday\, August 1\, continuing one of Connecticut’s most celebrated running traditions. Although registration is now full with 1\,000 runners entered\, spectators are encouraged to line the course\, cheer on participants\, and enjoy a morning that has become a summertime tradition along the Connecticut shoreline. \nFirst held in 1963 as the Schaefer Road Race\, the event began with just 19 runners tackling a 10.5-mile course through New London and Waterford. The inaugural race was won by New London native and 1957 Boston Marathon champion John J. Kelley\, whose legacy helped establish the event as one of New England’s premier road races. Three-time winner and 1968 Boston Marathon champion Amby Burfoot followed\, along with New York City Marathon champion Norm Higgins\, giving the race an impressive list of champions. Renamed the John J. Kelley Road Race in 1974 and expanded in 2003 to honor Kelley’s wife\, Jessie\, the event has continued to grow while maintaining its reputation as one of the region’s premier distance races. \nThe race became a half marathon in 2017\, drawing more than 1\,000 runners and serving as the third leg of the Kelley’s Pace Shoreline Trifecta. Beginning and ending inside Ocean Beach Park\, the scenic 13.1-mile course winds through New London and Waterford\, offering runners panoramic views of Long Island Sound\, quiet residential neighborhoods\, rolling hills\, and stretches of rural roadway before returning to the shoreline. Along the route\, volunteers\, police officers\, and community supporters help create an atmosphere that has earned the race recognition as one of New England’s best road races. \nWhile the field is full\, the event remains a celebration for the entire community. Spectators can cheer runners from Ocean Beach Park or along the course before enjoying the post-race festivities\, which include live music\, awards\, a huge raffle\, finisher medals\, physical therapy services\, and the race’s famous Port and Starboard clam chowder. Participants are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations for the Gemma E. SUMMARY:LoVeSeXy (Prince Tribute) at Ocean Beach Park
DESCRIPTION:LoVeSeXy (Prince Tribute) at Ocean Beach Park brings the music of Prince to the New London waterfront on Friday\, August 7\, as part of the park’s Summer Concert Series on the Boardwalk. The Boston-based tribute band performs two sets beginning at the earlier 7 p.m. start time\, filling the boardwalk with songs from across Prince’s career. \nLoVeSeXy isn’t built around simply looking like Prince. The six-piece band puts its attention on recreating the music\, with four lead vocalists\, experienced musicians\, and arrangements designed to capture the sound and energy of the original recordings. That means plenty of familiar hits\, but also deeper tracks aimed squarely at longtime Prince fans. \nAnd then there’s the setting. This isn’t a concert where you arrive\, find your seat\, and leave when the lights come up. Families and friends can spend the day at Ocean Beach Park\, grab food along the boardwalk\, hit the arcade or mini golf\, and stay as evening settles over Long Island Sound and the music begins. \nAbout LoVeSeXy\nBased in Boston\, LoVeSeXy is a New England Prince tribute band led by founding member and frontman Kobie Ali. A longtime Prince fan and experienced performer\, Ali is joined by guitarist and vocalist Jodee Frawlee and a lineup of veteran New England musicians. \nThe group features four lead singers\, allowing it to explore not only Prince’s catalog but music associated with the larger Minneapolis sound he helped create. \nRather than presenting a straight impersonation\, LoVeSeXy emphasizes the vocals\, musicianship\, arrangements\, and audience connection that defined Prince’s live performances. \nThe band has performed at venues throughout the Northeast\, including Foxwoods Resort Casino\, Mohegan Sun\, House of Blues Boston\, the Borgata in Atlantic City\, Blue Ocean Music Hall\, and previous appearances at Ocean Beach Park. \nThe Music of Prince\nPrince left behind an enormous catalog\, giving LoVeSeXy plenty of territory to cover. \nAudiences can expect major songs including “Let’s Go Crazy\,” “1999\,” “When Doves Cry\,” and “Purple Rain.” The band also reaches deeper into the catalog with fan favorites such as “Uptown\,” “17 Days\,” “Gett Off\,” “Adore\,” and “America.” \nThe show extends beyond Prince’s own recordings. LoVeSeXy also performs music connected to artists in his orbit\, including Sheila E. and Morris Day & The Time. \nThat mix makes the concert work on two levels: casual listeners get the songs they came to hear\, while serious Prince fans can recognize material that doesn’t always make it into a typical tribute show. \nTwo Shows on the Boardwalk\nLoVeSeXy will perform two sets during the evening\, with music beginning at 7 p.m. \nThe performance is part of Ocean Beach Park’s Summer Concert Series on the Boardwalk\, putting the stage within one of New London’s best-known summer attractions. \nConcert admission is included with the park’s parking fee at the gate. \nMake a Night of Ocean Beach Park\nThere’s plenty to do before the first note is played. \nOcean Beach Park stretches along the New London shoreline with a sandy beach and boardwalk overlooking Long Island Sound. Visitors can also find food and drinks\, amusement rides\, miniature golf\, water slides\, a children’s spray park\, an Olympic-size swimming pool\, arcade\, and gift shop. \nFor families\, that makes this an easy event to turn into an afternoon at the beach followed by an evening concert rather than a standalone night out. \nEvent Details\nDate\nFriday\, August 7\, 2026 \nTime\n7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. \nPerformance\nTwo sets by LoVeSeXy \nLocation\nOcean Beach Park \nAddress\n98 Neptune Ave.\nNew London\, CT \nAdmission\nConcert admission is included with the parking fee at the gate. \nParking\nOn-site parking is available for a fee. \nImportant Notes\nThis performance is part of the Summer Concert Series on the Boardwalk. SUMMARY:Steely Dan Tribute Night with the Franklin Brothers
DESCRIPTION:There’s a certain kind of sound that doesn’t age… it just settles in deeper over time. That’s what makes a Steely Dan night feel a little different\, and the Franklin Brothers lean right into it. Known for their tight musicianship and attention to detail\, the band brings a polished\, note-for-note respect to the material while still keeping the performance alive and moving. It’s not just about playing the songs—it’s about capturing that smooth\, layered feel that made Steely Dan stand apart in the first place. \nThe catalog they’re working from is as strong as it gets. Songs like “Reelin’ in the Years\,” “Do It Again\,” “Peg\,” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” blend jazz\, rock\, and pop into something that still feels effortless decades later. Steely Dan built a reputation on precision—clean arrangements\, sharp lyrics\, and a sound that feels both relaxed and incredibly intentional. That mix of groove and complexity is what gives the music its staying power\, and it translates especially well in a live setting. \nSet against the open-air backdrop of Ocean Beach Park in New London\, the night takes on that easy summer rhythm. Friday\, August 14 at 7 PM becomes less about a concert and more about settling in\, letting the music carry\, and enjoying a sound that’s as smooth as it is timeless. If you’re into classic rock with a little more depth and polish\, this is one of those nights that hits just right.
