DESCRIPTION:Learn how to Sail! \nAdult Beginner Sailing Courses at Mystic Seaport Museum are perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to learn how to sail. These fun Tuesday evening classes are open to beginners aged 14 and up with little to no sailing experience. The basic adult sailing course is offered June 16 through July 7 from 6:30-9:00 pm on Mystic Seaport’s picturesque historic waterfront. \nCourse students will learn sailing fundamentals such as how sailboats go and stop\, basic sailing terms\, knot tying\, rigging and de-rigging a sailboat\, safety guidelines\, points of sail\, basic small-boat handling\, and basic rules of the road. Classes will be held aboard Dyer Dhows. The stable Dyer Dwarf is ideal for learning to sail and has been introducing newcomers to our sport for decades. As students learn the basics in a classroom setting\, they will build confidence as they put their new skills into practice. \nGain a new hobby\, spend more time on the water\, or learn the basics you’ll need for years of sailing adventures to come! Course runs June 16 through July 7 and is limited to 20 students. Known for their massive size\, thick waterproof coats\, and incredible swimming ability\, Newfoundland dogs were originally bred by fishermen in Newfoundland\, Canada\, where they helped pull fishing nets\, haul gear\, and assist crews working in brutal North Atlantic conditions. \nWhat made the breed especially remarkable was its natural instinct for water rescue. Newfoundland dogs are powerful swimmers with partially webbed feet and enough strength to pull struggling people through rough water\, which helped earn them a reputation as one of history’s greatest rescue dogs. Stories of the breed saving sailors\, children\, and shipwreck victims date back hundreds of years\, and their lifesaving abilities became so respected that many maritime communities relied on them long before modern rescue equipment existed. \nThe Land & Sea Newfoundland Training Group helps preserve those traditional working skills through water rescue and draft work demonstrations that showcase the breed’s intelligence\, calm temperament\, and surprising athleticism. Watching these dogs move through the water makes it pretty easy to understand why Newfoundlands became such an important part of maritime history throughout coastal regions around the world. \n
