Known for their massive size\, thick waterproof coats\, and incredible swimming ability\, Newfoundland dogs were originally bred by fishermen in Newfoundland\, Canada\, where they helped pull fishing nets\, haul gear\, and assist crews working in brutal North Atlantic conditions. \nWhat made the breed especially remarkable was its natural instinct for water rescue. Newfoundland dogs are powerful swimmers with partially webbed feet and enough strength to pull struggling people through rough water\, which helped earn them a reputation as one of history’s greatest rescue dogs. Stories of the breed saving sailors\, children\, and shipwreck victims date back hundreds of years\, and their lifesaving abilities became so respected that many maritime communities relied on them long before modern rescue equipment existed. \nThe Land & Sea Newfoundland Training Group helps preserve those traditional working skills through water rescue and draft work demonstrations that showcase the breed’s intelligence\, calm temperament\, and surprising athleticism.
